First Look: Samsung Galaxy S Relay 4G speaks to keyboard-lovers

2:33 /

T-Mobile's latest QWERTY smartphone features Android 4.0 and a lovely 4-inch screen.

-I'm Jessica Dolcourt for CNET taking a first look at the Samsung Galaxy S relay 4G for T-Mobile. That is quite a mouthful, but this phone does have a lot to offer. First thing you should know is that it is Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The second thing you should know is that it's got a slide-out Qwerty keyboard, so those are the 2 most important factors. It's got a 4-inch Super Amoled screen. It's nice, it's bright, big. Also has a physical button below the home screen and 2 buttons on the side, and that aids in your navigation. Now the Qwerty keyboard is very large, roomy, spacious. The keys are fully separated, looks incredibly polished, and I really like that. However for me personally, when I started to use it, I found that it was a little wide for my hands which are on the smaller side. I also love keyboards because I love the precision of them. However, I couldn't go that fast, and I'm still not sure if that's just me getting used to the keyboard during my testing period or if there are other people who are gonna have that same problem and will never gain the speed that they really want for typing, so I think it really depends what kind of typist you are. Cameras on here, you've got a 5-megapixel shooter on the back with an LED flash, and you've got a 1.3-megapixel camera on the front. I thought that the cameras were really high quality, 5 megapixels may not sound as large as 8 megapixels, but the quality of the images were still very good. So I'd say that that's a success. There is a 1.2 gigahertz dual core processor in here. Processing was pretty fast. It's not the fastest one out there, but for most people I really don't think that's gonna make much of a difference. If you love your videos and your music and your photos, there are 8 gigabytes of internal storage and there's a micro SD card slot so you can put up to 32 gigabytes of extra storage on the slot. So basically if you are seeking a phone with a keyboard, then this one does have all the components that you would want. It's great to see Ice Cream Sandwich on here, and it's great also to have the fast processor and a very decent camera. The only question mark would be what kind of keyboard you like and if you test this one out in the store, you find it to your liking then I say go ahead and buy the phone. It costs 199 dollars and 99 cents after 50-dollar mailing rebate and of course being 4G it does ride T-Mobile HSPA plus network. I'm Jessica Dolcourt for CNET.
