First Look: Samsung FlipShot SCH-U900

Though it could offer better call quality, the Samsung FlipShot SCH-U900 is one of the best camera phones we've seen in a while.

[ Music ] >> Hi, I'm Ken Sherman, senior editor here at cnet.com. Today we'll take a first look at a Samsung flip-shot. This is also called the SBH 900. This is a Verizon Wireless phone. The flip-shot is an update to the earlier Verizon phone, the SBH 990. But has a similar shape, it's a little bit boxy, really straight lines, kind of sharp angles. Also it's similar to the earlier phone because when the display flips up like this, it also turns, and it can turn a full 180 degrees. You might think that's a little gimmicky, and in some ways it is, but actually it is pretty useful because it allows you full use of the camera. If you turn the phone like this, that means you can take self portraits, so you can see the screen is facing toward you. And [Inaudible] view finder. Also, you can tilt it on its side, take photos above you, or down. It can even turn the screen all the way around and flip it down, and that actually starts the camera automatically. So you can see that it actually looks like a camera. Especially from the back. You have a flash, you have a lens. So it really doesn't look like a stand-alone camera from behind. You can activate the camera's menus without going to main navigation array, which is nice. You can use the controls up here which are the volume rocker and other things. But when it's in camera mode they serve camera functions. But of course it is a phone, so it does other things as well. Has Bluetooth, has speaker phone, has find of high end phone options you'd expect. Call quality was pretty decent. Some callers sounded a little breathy, but overall wasn't too bad. Also, it's a V-cast phone, so it comes with all of Verizon's 3G services, and a music player as well. The front does have some dedicated music buttons. You can't see them unless the music player's active. But if I hold this down -- see, they light up right there. Inside, navigation controls and key pad are flat with the is surface of the phone, but I actually found them pretty useful. Got a lot of room in the navigation array. On the whole it's a pretty decent phone, it really has a high end camera, one of the best cameras that I've seen on a camera phone. But streaming video quality wasn't that great, but call quality was decent. I'm Ken Sherman and this is the Samsung flip-shot S B H 900. [ Music ]
