Tech Culture: Race for charity at CES

2:49 /

In 10 minutes and 31 seconds, a magazine editor assembled a PC in the shortest time at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on Monday night. News.com's Kara Tsuboi reports on the pre-race jitters and talks to hopeful contestants. The contest winner's charity of choice gets $10,000 and the assembled computer.

^M00:00:01 [ Music ] ^M00:00:04 >> I'm Kara Tsuboi from CNET News.com and I'm here at the Wynn Hotel Casino in Las Vegas afterhours. In just a few moments about 3 dozen racers are gonna be competing to put together the fastest PC. A lot of people are getting their game face on. ^M00:00:18 [ Screaming and Yelling ] ^M00:00:21 >> Are you ready? >> I'm more than ready. I've been ready since last year; so last year I lost by 6 seconds and that's painful. >> Corey Holtzman is a regular at Target Direct Annual PC building competition. Like many of the racers he's a total pro and builds computers for work but to be competitive, you've got to come with the strategy. >> You've got to stay focused and build it regardless of the noise and the excitement around you even if you think somebody else has already won. Hit your power button as soon as you're done and hope that they get disqualified and you become the new winner; that's the strategy. >> Just to stay focused, try not to get flustered by all the people next to me that are going to be pushing me, throwing screws into my computer. >> Have you been eating a very special like game day diet for this? >> Nothing but peanut butter; it was probably a mistake. >> CNET has entered two racers; Executive Editor Tom Merritt and Associate Producer Randall Bennett. ^M00:01:13 [ Inaudible ] ^M00:01:21 >> Once the system comes up hit 3, 2, 1, build your PC. ^M00:01:27 [ Music ] ^M00:01:35 >> They want every screw to be tight so you can't cut corners. If you do, then you're disqualified from your position if you didn't actually build it correctly. >> Early winner is declared but he made a mistake and a slip from first place; 10 minutes and 31 seconds into the competition a true victor emerges. >> Ladies and gentlemen this just in from our judges. Our official winner with a time of 10 minutes, 31 seconds Will Smith. >> Tell me what was your strategy going into this? >> You know I've done this before; the trick is just not to make any mistakes and start with the stuff on the bottom and work your way up to the top of the PC and that's what I did. >> Smith says this year was tough. There were more components to incorporate and fiercer competition but race aside, he's a fan of the DIY Pc. >> If you like PC's and you're in to PC's, don't go out and buy a PC, you're better off building your own; it's really rewarding; you get exactly the machine you want. >> 10,000 dollars will now go to Will's charity of choice, Child's Play, along with the computer that he just built--about 3500 dollars worth of equipment; not bad Will. I'm Kara Tsuboi reporting for CNET News.com. ^M00:02:43 [ Music ] ^M00:02:47
