Culture
[MUSIC] Greetings citizens of the internet, welcome to tomorrow daily. The best feed talk show in the known universe. I'm Ashley Esqueda and you're watching one of our many episodes. So it's where we talk about all the headlines and then on thursday take a deep dive into our favorite stories of the week. So we gotta get ya some stories. Let's hit some headlines. [SOUND] Making mind control prosthetic limbs is so 2015. [LAUGH] Let's talk about mind control robots. That's what EPFL in Switzerland is attempting to do with its telepresence robot. Often people with disabilities are unable to leave their homes or travel much, if at all. So a robot like this would be incredibly helpful for anyone in need of it. An EEG cap allows the user to send information to the robot to help plot a course By just thinking about moving their arms or legs. All that data helps the robot figure out where it needs to go, although the robot is not terribly complicated. Movements are currently limited to four basic directions, but it does have software on board to assist in obstacle avoidance. And overall control. Robots like this aren't scheduled to hit the market anytime soon, but you can see the huge amounts of potential in the idea. According to EPFL testers adapted to controlling the robot in less than two weeks. And as robots get more and more sophisticated, we think it's a pretty exciting prospect to keep an eye on. I do worry about combining this concept, VR headsets, and sophisticated robots because in that case, maybe we are the robots that conquer humanity. I just blew your mind right now. Okay, so, from robots to simulations, there's a team of researchers hoping to help emergency responders treat gunshot victims. At the conference of the American Physics Society a team of researchers from UCLA created an ultra realistic model of a human leg to give combat medics and trauma doctors a way to test methods of stopping bleeding from a wound before Or they have to experience it in real life on a human patient. Well the model itself isn't super-graphic, but it is very detailed. Researchers scanned bone, soft tissue and skin and then integrated a model of fluid dynamics to show How much bleeding would occur depending on where the victim's leg was hit. Right now doctor's actually work on animals to train for these types of injuries but that's obviously not ideal and doesn't take into consideration variables like broken bones or multiple wounds. So this type of simulation is a really great Step toward eliminating that outdated method. Well, this all really, really interesting stuff. And I'm sure it's going to help people in the future. But, honestly, if these guys have any spare time, might I suggest they work on the next surgeon simulator. Just saying. Okay, our very last story of the day, is a pop-up book that is also a camera. Kelly Anderson is an artist with an interesting new project. This book is a camera is exactly what it sounds like. It's a pop up book with one single pair of pages that you open up to and when it is laid flat a pen hole camera appears for you to snap a photo. Anderson spent a lot of time working on how exactly to construct a pinhole camera out of paper, and then figure out how to incorporate that into a pop-up book. She wanted to quote connect the dots between design and science, structure and function. The film can be any smaller light-sensitive material. But you'll definitely have to get your dark room on to get your shot. Once that's complete, you'll also need to use an app or a scanner to invert the black and white image you produce. Not only can you pick up This Book Is a Camera for less than $30 on Anderson's web site, she also invites visitors to build their own paper camera and gives complete instructions on how to do so. Anderson is also known for her paper record player and is currently working on This Book Is a Planetarium. Which I'm very excited to check out. Okay guys I was on vacation on Monday so let's talk about some crowd funding. [SOUND] Okay we gotta talk about shiftware right now. These are machine washable smart s Speakers that have HD color e paper displays on them, so you can program your shoes to change on a whim. The soles are coated with Kevlar fibers, they charge wirelessly or while you walk, and have a back light so you can show off your kicks In the dark. An app allows you to browse designs and push them to your shoes, and a market place for buying and selling premium designs and animations will also be available to users and creators. So how does it all work? Well, shiftware isn't telling, they say they're protecting themselves from the competition right now and don't actually to have a prototype to show as well. So for me, I would say those are both caution flags. So how does it all work? Well, ShiftWear isn't exactly telling. They say they're protecting themselves from the competition right now on their Indiegogo page. And they also don't have a working prototype to show off. So for me, I would proceed with extreme caution. Shiftwear could absolutely be amazing if they deliver on their promises and if you want to get in on a pair early you can back them for 150, 200, or $250 depending on if you want a low medium or high top shoe. And they will deliver, supposedly, in fall of 2016. That's it for our headlines, and our crowdfunding segment. So let's check out our phonetographer of the day. Our phonetographer of the The day today is Kevin who took this picture with his iPhone 6S and he wrote to us and said hi [INAUDIBLE] I was at a theme park and I took this picture with my iPhone 6S I'd gladly give you permission to use this photo, cheers. Kevin, this is an awesome picture. I think it's amazing. The contrast looks great. I feel almost like I'm there. And you did a great job. If you guys are out there and you want to submit your photography to potentially be featured on the show, please email it to us tomorrow@cnet.com. Send us your name and tell us a little story about it, give us permission to use your picture on the show and of course, tell us what device you took it with. Because honestly, we love hearing all of that stuff If you want to find us on the internet we're Tomorrow Daily on places like Facebook and Twitter or TomorrowDaily.com if you wanna share the show with somebody which we always appreciate and you can find us as individuals on Twitter @ashleyesqueda @jeffcannata two n's and one t and @loganmoy. Well that's it for the show guys we'll be back tomorrow with our long format sub. We're gonna take a deep dive into some of the stories that Jeff and I talked about this week But until then, be good humans. We'll see you guys next time. Bye! [MUSIC]
