First Look: Plantronics Voyager Pro

The Plantronics Voyager Pro might not look like much, but it has the best sound quality of any Bluetooth headset we've ever tried.

[ Music ] ^M00:00:07 >> I'm Nicole Lee, associate editor for CNET.com, and this is the Plantronics Voyager Pro, which has the best sound quality of any Bluetooth headset I've ever tried, which is why we recently gave this an Editor's Choice Award. Even though the Voyager Pro has excellent sound quality, as you can see here, the design is pretty bulky. It has this very large battery pack on the back, which you hang behind your ear. There's also a very large, swiveling boom mike as well that you can rotate. The earpiece can be rotated to fit in either the left or right ear. On the back of the headset is the power button. On the top is the volume rocker. And on the side here is the multi-function call button. However, despite its size -- you will definitely be noticed wearing this headset -- it's very, very comfortable due to the very soft silicone-like ear gel right here. It comes in different sizes. Also, the Voyager Pro is very simple and easy to put on and wear. So what makes the sound quality of the Voyager Pro so good? It combines a physical noise-canceling barrier with the dual microphone system and the two-windshield protector around the mic as well. It also has software that Plantronics has created for the Voyager Pro called Audio IQ 2, and it combines both the hardware and the software of the Voyager Pro to create very excellent noise canceling and excellent wind noise handling as well. We tested the Voyager Pro in a variety of situations, in the quiet office environment, in a moving vehicle, on a crowded city sidewalk, as well as in front of an indoor fan with low and high speeds. In almost all situations, the call quality was loud and clear. Our callers could hear us even though there was a very noisy background. And we were very impressed with how it handled wind noise. Even though callers could still hear the wind noise in the background in terms of the sound of crumpling paper, they could still hear our voices loud and clear above the sound of the wind. The Voyager Pro also excels in incoming call quality. Incoming calls sounded very rich and full, a very natural sounding voice as well. So even the Voyager Pro is very bulky, and it's not the most stylish headset out there, its superior call quality definitely earns it an Editor's Choice Award.
