Oculus Rift gets a Q1 2016 release and we better upgrade our PCs (Tomorrow Daily 193)

Culture
On today's show, Fiat has a fun new way to help you parallel park your car. And Oculus has officially revealed their consumer headset, controller, and games. SO much to tell you about in Tomorrow Daily! [MUSIC] Greetings, citizens of the internet, welcome to Tomorrow Daily. The best geek talk-show in the know universe. I'm Ashley Esqueda, Jeremy is always punching the sky very lightly, Khail Anonymous. Yeah, I'm in virtual reality right now. It was a busy morning. I think after today's announcement we all want to hop into virtual reality. Finally I think we're starting to see that, everybody is starting to understand the power of virtual reality. Yeah. Because of this Occulus press conference. But let's get right into it and let's hit the headlines. [MUSIC] That would have been in stereo if you had been wearing an Occulus ring. Yeah. Anyway, go on. that's a brand new reveal. Occulus had a press conference this morning in which they revealed a lot more than we thought they would. Yeah. They revealed. Okay, so it broke down like this: they revealed the consumer headset finally, they revealed a brand new controller, and they revealed games. Let's start off with the brand new headset. This is the consumer headset, they've had two other headsets out that were the developer ones but they revealed, "Hey, here's your consumer headset". This is what you're buying in the box. yeah, it's coming out in 2016, so next year very early, Q one. It's going to have headphones that are removable. Love that. It's gonna have an OLED screen inside. It's gonna have changeable lenses. Yeah. You can change that. It's gonna have a lot of It's gonna be able to conform to what your visual needs are. Yeah. Going to be, so you don't get a headache. I really liked that little dial that helps you adjust the pupillary distance for the lenses themselves. Because it's like, you have the screen and the two lenses you're looking through. And the little dial, I thought maybe it was for nearsightedness, where it was like you could adjust it based on what your prescription would be. Not so. All right. It's this way. So these aren't even that interesting [CROSSTALK] compared to the rest of the stuff. I'm really fascinated by that. Okay, so some other stuff we didn't expect. So, now we have a controller, there's a controller that comes with it, and it's the Xbox One controller. Big surprise. A controller that already exists. So, does this mean there's going to be Xbox connectivity? Yes, there's going to be Xbox connectivity, you're going to be able to play some of your Xbox games including Halo and Forza Kind of. I was going to say kind of. I know. Kind of, so basically you're going to watch it in sort of a theater mode. It's going to be you wearing the Oculus and it's going to be a screen inside the Oculus which would be cool I guess if you don't have a good headset. Or a big television. If you have a little television that's great because then it looks like you have a huge television like that. Or it's not high def or So yeah, and also there's going to be a little mounted camera, they didn't show that. But, there's going to be a mounted camera so that it can sense where your head is and movement and stuff like that [CROSSTALK] Like a sensor, I laughed because they said something along the lines of once you put it behind your monitor, it becomes invisible, and I'm like wait a minute. It's not, I don't think it's a camera though. I think it's, like we were wondering, is it infrared? Like it's tracking. I'm using the term camera. Yeah, some sort of tracking, weird. They use the term camera too. It's not like a camera recording you. Right, yeah. But anyway, that is pretty much the best things about the headsets. So good. Let's move on to the huge surprise, which was the brand new controllers, okay? Yeah, this is weird. So this is the Oculus Touch. they look really strange, like controllers you've never seen before. Two little round controllers. They have little analog sticks on top so you can move it around. They're apparently sensitive, too. They have two triggers. Around the edges of the controller are little sensors so they can sense where it's going. Like where you're moving your hands and stuff. Yeah, it's gonna be more organic. Apparently they were going for the feel of, you usually reach out into the virtual. space Right and they're going for a more accurate representation so it's not just you sitting there with a controller Like this, reaching out for stuff this way, got it. So, I guess the big thing that they were saying was that, oh, you're gonna be able to do gestures. That's like with your hands. It will sense your gestures so they said, what was it I was like, give it a thumbs up, and he was like, I'm gonna give you a thumbs up. That was, and I was like, oh, Palmer. I rolled my eyes so much during the thumbs up seg. He was so dorky. It was my favorite though because he came out with his little flip-flops and his jeans and he was so, so southern Californian to me. It was really endearing but also, I was like dude Get it together. Yeah, they didn't show off him actually using it per say. No. But they said along with all of this stuff that you're going to be hands on at E3 and they're going to show off more at E3 but that brings us to the games. The games. Okay so, it's all been a questionmark of what games are going to be on any of these headsets. Because there's been like third party developers that have been working on stuff. Right. But now we have some official lists. Oh, my God, look at this one. Oh, I know. Cuz this one, this is Valkyrie This one was shown up at E3 last year. You step into a space, fighter pilot. Eve Valkyrie. Yeah. Incredible. Apparently like the whole three dimensional space of moving around- I want this. Is an incredible thing. That was the game that turned me on Oculus at E3 last year. I put it on and I got to play a little demo where I was dog fighting. And there was a guy next to me, just like you're sitting next to me now, and I was like yeah haha and I was making a comment to him. And there was a starship there and I was just like, whoa. And it was just this weird moment were I was like, okay I get it. Yeah I'm sure you looked like a maniac. Like this is amazing. Thing and so yeah I totally look like a maniac but it was awesome next up there was from insomniac games of all people to make ratchet and plank and they also make the resistant series so like credible developers really highlight that>> out of edge of nowhere which looks amazing it looks kind of like uncharted yeah>> but also, kind of like what's that one in the snow anyway it looks really incredible it's a third person Game, which I think Logan agrees is weird. Right, Logan? Yeah. It's a little weird. They are. You're supposed to be immersive- anyway. SO it looks incredible. The graphic looks amazing. We don't exactly know how- You know it's gonna look VR. You're not seeing any VR head movements, though. I feel like this movie could also be titled, alternately, Tom Hardy in Inception. This game? Yes, this game. I'm sorry. This game could be titled Tom Hardy in Inception in the fourth level because he was down in the snow fighting and stuff. That's the one I would go with. I'd say that's the one I'm most excited about because It looks really good. It looks like the most story-driven. But, that's not to be said, that this next one that they announced, Gunfire Games Chronos, which is pretty cool because as you're playing the game, you age. Oh! So, you enter the dungeon in different ways. I left the As you get older, you get magic and you're wiser. Oh, I'm so excited. But it's gonna, yeah, that's definitely your type of game. I had to leave, like I had to stop the press conference to get here. So I was just like, okay, I've gotta go. But I want to see all this and I missed this so this is super fascinating to me and yes- So you start out young, you can fight, and as you play the game your getting older and so you have to like Change the way you're tackling the dungeon. It's really interesting. They wrapped it all up with a really great image of some of the other developers that they're working with, some of which you may hear at E3, some of which you may not. I wrote down some of the bigger ones are Square Enix And harmonics. Big time. And then they add some other ones that aren't huge developers but I'm sure are gonna bring some A-game to try and get their name out there. So there you go, hopefully we'll see some of that at E3, and also Gotta set it up. That's going to be there, I'm sure. Gotta step it up. I'm sure it will be. Alright. But those Oculus touch controllers are super fascinating. I can see sports games, teach you how to box and stuff. So, I wanted Coming out of it, I've got to give them an 8.5 out of 10 on this, it's pretty cool. Well, I would have like to see them play some of the game. Okay, yeah. They were like we got games, I'd like to Want to see them play some of the games. Fair enough. And I also would have liked them to say, hey you know this IP. We worked with them to make it a VR experience in the Oculus. I see. We know this game word exists but now you can play it in VR. We know that you kind of hack to get that but I wanna see someone jump in. And or a game that's coming out. But this may be announced in Eve 3. I was gonna say, will you lose your mind? Or will you super lose your mind if they do Fallout 4 on the [UNKNOWN]? Like what if Valve announces that? I will buy the [UNKNOWN] for that. I know, you'll go, [UNKNOWN] will lose it. Okay, so, I guess, is this our TD of the day? Yes, of course it is. [CROSSTALK] TDRIFT16, because we've done rift before, so I wanna make sure I get your feedback on this specific story. So #TDRIFT16, the question is. Question is, Are you gonna upgrade your PC for this? Cuz you gotta have a PC, it's gotta connect. So a lot of people- Did they give the specs? No, but I think they've mentioned it on the website. They have the specs available, I don't think they went over them in detail during the actual [CROSSTALK] If I recall correctly, and this is pretty high. It's high, it's a high bar. It's a 970 graphics card [CROSSTALK] And an I 5 processor.>>oh I 5.>>I 5.>>I though it was I 7.>>I'm pretty sure it's I 5 but it may be I 7 and then I think they said at least 16 gigs of ram so..>>Yeah and I mean there's a lot of people out there with not that video card at the very least. I would imagine you'd probably want to have an SSD drive to access everything very quickly. Yeah. That's low high end. You're not gonna want to have lag in your oculus cause it'll probably make you sick. You'll lose your frames, yeah. You need it to be smooth. It's not gonna be, you want it to be smooth. So are you gonna IS this a thing where this enough, is this keynote enough to make you say, I've got to upgrade my PC for 2016. You're gonna have to upgrade your PC. That's the other important thing. No price point. We were not given a price point as to how much this is going to... Going to cost how much, the headsets going to cost. Remember, it comes with a controller. Which is what, $50? And headphones. $50, just for the controller, in retail already. And also the controllers, the touch. Those are prototypes, who knows? We don't know if those are coming out in 2016, if they're smart, they will. Yeah. They'll come out at the same time, so you can get the full experience. That'd be amazing. But, we don't know how much all of that costs. So, the question is Are you willing to upgrade your PC and then buy this stuff? And then buy this. I mean, let's say at the minimum you're gonna spend, what? $1,500 to upgrade your PC. Between 1,000 and 1,500. Let's say low end $1,000. That's how much I spent. But I bought, it was brand new. [CROSSTALK] All brand new build? So let's say between a grand and 1500, then you're spending, I don't know, like a few hundred dollars? Maybe 400? 399 for Rift? Here's how we'll test it. Producer Logan doesn't even have a PC, so the question is would he buy a PC and then would you get the Rift, and. We'll I'm buying one for Heroes of the Storm anyway. He's already buying one. You guys are such a low income here. If you don't have a computer, the question is, will you buy a computer just for VR? Because right now, there's nothing that works fully inside the headset. It's not made into the headset. You have to use your processing power of a computer to make it work. Okay. Alright. Alright. That's to the question. Will you upgrade? Okay. So now we've talked about this, we scrapped the third story today cuz we were so excited about Oculus. We're talk about Fiat and this really awesome integrated, it's an ad, it's done by Leo Burnett, which is a really popular famous ad agency here in the states. Oh. They did this thing where it's basically interactive parking, and it's people being projected on a wall and they help you park your car, which is really really fun. So let me tell you how this works. Because it's not live. And that was thing that surprised me was I thought, I genuinely thought that the people on this billboard were people who like were in a studio helping people park their cars. Not so. So, here's how they did it. They ended up taking the parking assistant technology from the Fiat 500. They put it all together. They added some software. And, then they filmed people doing this. They filmed people with their hands out, and then getting closer, and then going back out. So they could change the speed, then? And, then they changed. Speed based on exactly how close or far they are from the other cars in front of or behind them. What? Look at this thing. Well it's amazing, like this is such a fun ad! These are the kinds of ads that I'm willing happily deal with and watch, because they are fun and interactive. And of course Fiat was like Fiat makes parking sexy, .Fiat makes parking cool, Fiat makes parking look like child's play, like it was a whole bunch of different things. And it's just so awesome, like I love this video there. [LAUGH] Aw. I totally love that they did this, it's so funny. It's ultrasonic sensing tech that is both in the car, the Fiat 500, and then that's the tech they use to actually help people Will park their other, non Fiat cars around. And I love that. And if, yeah, somebody gets hit, they were like, What are you doing? They freak out and they're like hey. No, no, you should never draw attention. If you hit somebody's car, you're just like, Nothing happened. [CROSSTALK] [INAUDIBLE] Fun to also sell your product, of course, but it's like, I love these creative uses like the KFC tray typer. I love these creative uses of technology and advertising, because really, nobody wants to see another. I don't need to see a 30-second ad about Fiat in front of a YouTube video about cats. Like ghosts in sweaters. Speak for yourself, all of those things sound great. Okay, well- I know what you mean work harder for my- [CROSSTALK] Yeah, work more creatively, doesn't even have to be harder, but work more creatively for my eyeballs, and this is a great way to do it. Obviously there were people taking pictures of the billboard and it was just so fun and exciting, this is the kind of stuff I love to see. Yeah, very cool. [UNKNOWN] and Leo [UNKNOWN] have been doing this little experiment, super fun. But that is it for our headline for today. We will be right back. We have some great intuits and we also have your user feedback and our phone tag for the day. So don't click away, it's Tamara Daily. Oh, right, and watch this great video. Just watch. [FOREIGN] [MUSIC] Welcome back to the show. If you're wondering what you just saw before we went to break, that's a ramen commercial for Nissen. And really, you guys, seek out that commercial because the rest of it is even crazier than the first part. It's his head on a bunch of wild horses. He surfs through an ocean of ramen noodles. It's amazing. It's my favorite new commercial. 100%. I wanna now go out and buy that kind of cheap ramen. That's my new plan. But it's Thursday, which means we have to talk about the things that we are excited about. It's Into It! How are you feeling this week? What do you.>>Steam Summer sale!.>>That's right.>>If you're a pt gamer you know about the Seam summer sale. Basically Steam just makes other games up to 60% off some are like 80% off. You're looking right now this is actually a live feed of it going on right now. Right now. So you see some that have 70% off. Anyway, this is a huge deal for PC gamers, cause we go out, and we spend money and never play these games. Yeah, this is a great. But it's great to add it. Yeah, great opportunity to add to your stack of shame. This is why you have [UNKNOWN]. Some of the good ones on here, the Tales of the Borderlands pretty good. What is it? The Vining of Isaac is pretty good. Then GTA V and all the GTA games are on sale. Oh, wow. All of them. I just picked up, I didn't pick up for the Steam sale Grand Theft Auto Vice City and Grand Theft Auto III which I'm never gonna play because I've already played them through like three or four times. Like a million times. But I bought them because they were $4. So yeah, Steam summer sale is great, it goes on for like a week plus I can't I can't wait to buy a bunch of games I'm never gonna play. I always take the steams sales as an opportunity to buy a bunch of Indie games that I've been checking out but I can't like, I always want to try them but then I'm also like I can't spend $20 on a game that I have no idea about, like, games that were made by Indie developers that you've never heard of so it's a good opportunity. Yeah, it's true. Which, I was like. I think the brining of Issac, or whatever that game is, I've never. Which is great. Yeah, I want to play that, it sounds pretty good. And you can get it for so cheap. So, speaking of games I'm into E3, E3s coming guys. It's like winter in game of thrones, except super better than winter in game of thrones. Yeah, just hit the horn on that So this is what we're doing for E3 this year.>>Oh, our grand plans for E3. There you go. Our grand plans for E3! I figured we'd just tell you guys now. We are going to be not having a show on Monday. So there will not be a show on Monday but I will be down and so will Kale on the ground at all the press conferences so you can follow us on our Twitter @AshleyEsqueda for me. @KhailAnonymous And you can see all the things we're doing on Monday, that's press conference day. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, when the show floor opens. We will be on the show floor doing Tomorrow Daily every one of those days. We're really excited about it. We're doing some other fun stuff that we can't wait to tell you about. But we can't tell you about it yet. And here's some of the stuff that's really exciting. We're looking forward to seeing, like what, Fallout 4. Yoshi's Wooly World, I'm looking forward to seeing The Legend of Zelda game. [CROSSTALK] I wanna see the Mad Max game. I know it's gonna suck, but- The Mad Max game [CROSSTALK] I"m down for that. There's so many great games. DSX. Battlefront. I'm sure there'll be Assassin's Creed one that I won't wait in line for. Assassin's Creed. Yeah, Battlefront. Yeah, that old London one. The old London Assassin's Creed. That was awesome. And yeah, Battlefront, it looks ridiculous. There's two fallout press conference type things, so I'm definitely going to watch those. Yeah, there's going to be so much great stuff out there. And don't forget, also the VR headsets are going to be a big thing this year, too. Right. I know Kelly's going to be talking about them. By the way, in case you're wondering, beyond that, both Producer Logan and I. Here. Present. Yep. Will be checking out the VR almost exclusively. We're gonna be getting out grubby little hands on everything else but- Make sure you tweet @Kel and tell him what you wanna see if there's something VR at the show. VR. Look at me I'm VR. I know, it's such a good look for you. Yeah. It really is. You should make a whole calendar. I came out of the womb, I'm like- Ahh! It was like virtual reality in a little way. So yeah, that's what we're doing, we're doing the show for, so Tomorrow Daily next week will be Tuesday, Wednesday and thursday, so if you don't see us on Monday, don't panic. Head over to social media and we'll be online. I'm sure so many of you are going to panic, you're not going to panic. Speaking of you, it's time to talk about your user feedback. [MUSIC] That was good. This is a story. Speaking of you? Speaking of you. Speaking of you. You. It's like an indie film, alright, go ahead. We asked you guys to use the hashtag #tdmusk and you guys emailed us at tomorrow@cnet.com, you sent us stuff on social media at tomorrow daily on twitter, I guess made some comments on YouTube; great stuff, great stuffy, guys and that's where you can find us all of the time. We have to Give us a plot to the imaginary comic book, The Continuing Space Adventures of Elon Musk, which really should be a thing. I picture him as a little kid. That's amazing. And his spacesuit is a little too big. And I like that he has maybe- And he's saluting, and there's a flag. An astronaut hamster, as like a sidekick. A talking, astronaut, hamster. Yeah, I can get down on that, that has just the little- Adorable helmet. Anyway, who cares, keep going. Jesus wrote in and said musk gets superpowers touring LHC, in a large [INAUDIBLE] collider. Goes Dr Manhattan, creates life on Mars, Hiperloops Ashley & Khail: TD Mars Edition. I like all of this. It was a great plot. Great plot. I like that Kelly said Dr. Manhattan, because Dr. Manhattan just ends up leaving. Ruins Everything. Yeah, he hates it. Caleb wrote in and said Today Mr. Musk is going to supply the world with wireless Power via his satellite 'solar power farm'". [LAUGH] I like that idea, free energy. I know. That would be amazing. Gail wrote in and said, Elon Musk vs. The Petrol-Powered Martians (or How Elon Musk Saved Matt Damon!). [LAUGH] [LAUGH] You guys have some great ones this time too. These are pretty good, yeah. RLMcKee wrote in and said, please Fund an underground moon colony, and soon. I'm down for that. It might be scary. Underground moon colony, yes. Sim Floyd Jr wrote in and said he just needs to take over Nuclear Fusion. That's all he wants. Like even in real life, that could be a story. Take over that whole entire area of research. And then Lewis wrote in and said Elon Musk creates the civilization of meta-humans on Mars hashtag Oh man. That maybe a Flash spoiler, I don't know. I don't watch that show. I don't watch it either. But yeah, super good user feedback. You guys have some great ideas. So funny. Once again, our hashtag of the day TDRift16, one six, like the numbers, and tell us your PC plans for Oculus Rift. You gonna buy a computer? You gonna upgrade? Are you not? Maybe you won't. Either way, tell us about it. Tomorrow@CNet.com, TomorrowDaily on Twitter. All the good things. And now it's time for our very last [INAUDIBLE] user feedback. It's time for our phonetographer of the day. [MUSIC] I messed up. We had somebody, Sent us a picture a few weeks ago. And I thought his name was Sakheef but I was wrong because he wrote in and said, hi guys since the last time I actually messed up with my name lol. [LAUGH] So I'll go with my nickname, Kip. So this is Kip. Yes, that's much easier, thank you Kip. [LAUGH] Kip said, I wanna show you guys my panorama shot of Niagara Falls. Taken by my one plus one during our road trip around the US. Well worth our 4,000 miles on the road. The best talk show in the known universe. #kipidap. He hashtagged his own name. I guess so. P.S. Loved your Stars Wars shirt. Love, Ashley. I know. I love that shirt too. I can't wear it every day though because Cale would have to deal with my terrible smell. I mean, you already have to do I mean, even more so, yeah. yeah, even more so than usual It's incredible that Great picture. Is it the same one plus one guy as before? Yeah. So good. He's really selling that phone right now. I love the city in the background. I mean this is such a fantastic panoramic. It's gorgeous. You can see some of nature and some roads on one side and you've got City and the falls right in the middle, it's just such a good picture. Yeah, very nice. Very cool. Really good composition. Excellent work, Kip. Good job, Kip. Sorry about Ashley messing up your name. Yeah. I would've done it too, probably. I have no credibility. Yeah, I'm sorry. I apologize. I try really hard to pronounce things correctly because it's important to me. But unfortunately, sometimes I'm not perfect, because I'm not fully robotic yet. I'm only 98% Cylon, so I'm going to get that 2% someday, though. On that note, As I said, you can email us tomorrow at cnet.com you can find us online, do all those things. That is it for the show today, and this week. Please tune in for our E3 extravaganza next week, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday for Tomorrow Daily. We will be back on Tuesday with a brand new docket of video game, all day Everyday, all next week. But until then be good humans and we'll see you guys next time. Bye. [MUSIC]
