First Look: Nikon Coolpix S8000

A nice design and a couple extra features keep the Nikon Coolpix S8000 from being an also-ran compact megazoom.

[ Music ] ^M00:00:03 >> Hi. I'm Josh Goldman, Senior Editor for CNET Reviews, and this is a look at the Nikon Coolpix S8000. It's a 14-megapixel camera featuring a 30-millimeter-equivalent wide-angle lens with a 10X zoom and a 3-inch high resolution LCD in a pocketable body. As one of Nikon's higher-end compacts, you might expect more advanced shooting modes, but for all intents and purposes, the S8000 is geared for automatic point and shoot use. You do get some control over results in its auto mode, and there's sliders for adjusting color tones, saturation, and brightness, but that's about it. Other shooting modes include a scene recognition auto mode, a selection of individual scene settings, Nikon's smart portrait system with blink and smile detection and skin smoothing, and subject tracking to help keep a moving subject in focus. The S8000 also records 720p HD quality movies at the push of a button. And there's a stereo mike on top for improving audio quality, but unfortunately, you don't get use of the optical zoom while recording. Shooting performance is good but not exceptional, in line with a typical compact mega zoom. It does start up and shoot quickly as long as you're fast to press the shutter. Photo quality is average for its class, producing decent photos at lower ISOs, but low-light, higher ISO photos look more like paintings than photos. I'm Josh Goldman, and that's the Nikon Coolpix S8000. ^M00:01:29 [ Music ]
