[ Music ] ^M00:00:07 >> What up, prize fight fans? I'm Brian Tong and we're here with two Motorola Smartphones on two different carriers that are ready to draw blood. It's a prize fight punch-out between the Motorola Devour on Verizon and the Motorola CLIQ XT on T-Mobile. Our judges for this fight are Senior Editor, Kent German, Senior Editor Bonnie Cha and myself. Now, we'll take all three judges' scores and average them out to the nearest 10th each round. The final prize fight score will be an average of all rounds using the same decimal system. Which phone turns you on? Round 1 is design. The Devour has a solid feel and a nice metal finish, but it's almost 50% thicker, it's pretty blocky, and it's one of the heavier phones that you'll use. The CLIQ XT has a nice slim profile with rounded corners. Kent likes its textured booty. It's not the sexiest on the planet, but design is more of the focus here. The CLIQ XT gets 4 and the Devour gets a 3.3. Next round is controls and user interface. We like the Devour slide design. It kind of reminds me of a modernized sidekick with a full QWERTY keyboard. But it loses points with the awkward placement of its thumbpad, because the lower left corner makes a whole lot of sense, and it lacks pinch and zoom multitouch. But thank goodness, it's a touch screen. The CLIQ XT is also a touch screen phone. It has no physical keyboard, but for the most part, its track pad does the job, even if it sometimes skips over the icon I want to go to. It really stands out when you use its swipe keyboard feature that allows you to drag your finger over letters to create words. But unlike the Devour, this includes multitouch pinch and zooming. The CLIQ XT takes another round with a 3.7, and the Devour gets a 3.3. So after averaging two rounds, the CLIQ XT takes a solid 6/10ths of a point lead. The Devour has some work to do. Next round is features. Both phones are loaded with 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS, and feature the MOTOBLUR service that combines all your messages and contacts from different services into one. The Devour is running Android 1.6, which gives it an edge. E-mail support is extensive, but its 3-megapixel camera with no flash was as weak performer. The CLIQ XT is running Android 1.5, and its 5-megapixel camera with flash puts the Devour's to shame, but it just isn't enough. Devour gets the edge with a 4, and the CLIQ XT gets a 3.7. Next round is Web browsing and multimedia. The Devour is bringing a capable Web browser, but it lacks multitouch. Its media player does the job, but there's nothing special about it, and I'm still waiting for Google to start caring about media playback. The CLIQ XT Web browser brings pinch-to-zoom multitouch that instantly gives it the edge, but then you talk about its media player that's feature-packed with FM radio, SHOUTcast streaming, SoundHound for strong identification, and the tune Wiki community apps for music discovery. All of the judges agree that CLIQ XT gest a perfect 5, and the Devour gets a 3.7. So after averaging four rounds, the CLIQ XT leads by half a point, but does the Devour have anything left? The final round that decides it all is called quality. The Devour runs on Verizon's network, but we expected more than what we got here in the Bay area. Kent heard a background buzz, and I also had occasional pops. Bonnie felt the phone sounded pretty clear in New York. Now, the CLLIQ XT running on T-Mobile's network surprised with an extremely clean and natural sound on both sides of the line in San Francisco. It's really one of the best-selling phones I've heard so far, and Bonnie found it to be solid in the NYC. The CLIQ XT strikes again with a 4.7, and the Devour gest a 4. So let's average out all five rounds, and in a battle where the CLIQ XT took four out of the five rounds and pretty much killed any possible prize fight drama. It takes this battle, 4.2 to 3.7, and is your prize fight winner. I'm Brian Tong. Thanks for watching. We'll catch you guys next time for another prize fight. ^M00:04:00 [ Music ]
