CNET Update: Microsoft buys Nokia, next Android named KitKat

2:50 /

And in other big mobile news, Apple sends out invites for its iPhone event and Amazon updates the Kindle Paperwhite.

It's time for a new iPhones, Kindles, and Android KitKat? I'm Bridget Carey and this is your CNET Update. It's official. A new iPhone will be announced on Tuesday, September 10th. Apple sent out a colorful event invitation to press with the words "This should brighten everyone's day." Looks like a clue that we will be getting a plastic iPhone 5C in several colors. But Windows Phone will have a huge update of its own so to speak. Microsoft has bought the mobile side of Nokia and it'll license Nokia's mapping services in a deal worth 7.2 billion dollars. By bringing in Nokia smartphone muscle, it could help Windows Phone better compete against Apple and Android. And if that wasn't enough mobile news, Google takes the cake or should I say candy because its latest operating system will be called KitKat, yes, as in Nestle's KitKat. Give me a break. Google always names versions of Android after sweets starting with each letter of the alphabet and the next one up being the letter K. The plan was to call it Key Lime Pie. Google says Nestle isn't paying Google for the brand name. So did Google also consider Krispy Kreme or how about Kool-Aid? Oh yes. Moving on there's more big news. Amazon announced a new and improved version of its e-ink reader, the Kindle Paperwhite. It will have a better display technology, 25 percent faster processor, a more responsive touchscreen along with new features including Kindle Page Flip. It lets readers scan or skip pages without losing their place. Amazon is taking preorders now for the new Paperwhite which costs the same as the last model starting at $120, and it'll ship September 30th. And that's not all from Amazon. If you've ever bought a book on Amazon even if it was 18 years ago Amazon will let you buy the digital version of that book for cheap. The digital price could be $3, $2, $1, or even free depending on the book's age or popularity. The program is called Kindle MatchBook and it'll launch in October with 10,000 book titles. Even if you don't own a Kindle e-reader tablet you could still get these prices when downloading on the Kindle app. And reports are coming in about Samsung's new smartwatch Galaxy Gear. They're have been some fuzzy images posted by Venture Beat of a chunky 3-inch screen strapped to a wrist, but the design could change for the final version. It's also said to have a camera and a microphone along with tiny speakers. Are we finally getting the Dick Tracy watch? Stay tuned to CNET.com for the latest details as Samsung shows it off at a tech conference going on now in Germany. That's your jam-packed tech news Update, but you can find more details at CNET.com/Update. From our studios in New York, I'm Bridget Carey.
