First Look: Logitech Pure-Fi Elite

1:58 /

The Logitech Pure-Fi Elite stands above the iPod-speaker competition with a can't-miss combination of excellent design, great sound, and a low price.

>> Hi, I'm David Carnoy, executive editor for cnet.com and I'm here to tell you about the Logitech Pure-Fi Elite iPod speaker system. This is the successor to Logitech's AudioStation. They changed the name, but it looks very similar to the AudioStation. But they've made a couple of nice improvements to it. First off, the buttons on the front used to be touch-sensitive and now they're pressure sensitive, more like standard buttons, and that actually is a big improvement because previously the touch-sensitive buttons didn't work that well. Logitech has also made the grill covers metal instead of cloth. They've also tweaked the design of the remote that comes with the system, buttons are a lot more tactile, better laid-out, and it's actually a really good remote. This model like the previous version has an audio output on the back as well as a video output. It's an S video output. Logitech, unfortunately, recessed the port on the S video output, so you can't get all S video connectors in there, but it is there. Unfortunately, the video output doesn't work with the latest generation of video iPod, includes the iPod Touch and the new Nano. The one drawback of the system is while it has a clock it doesn't have an alarm. We've talked to Logitech about this, hopefully they'll include an alarm on the next one. It's a small short-coming, but it's a little pet peeve of mine that a unit that has a clock doesn't have an alarm. Logitech really hasn't done much to improve the sound with this model but it was already really good to begin with, especially for a model this size. It's one of the better compact iPod speaker systems we've tested in terms of sound. And finally one of the key differences between this model and the old version is that this one costs half the price, and that's part of the reason why we rated the Pure-Fi Elite as highly as we did. I'm David Carnoy and that's the Pure-Fi Elite. ^M00:01:46 [ Music ]
