First Look: LG BD670

Despite disc-loading speeds that are just average, the LG BD670's built-in Wi-Fi and excellent streaming media suite make it one of the best Blu-ray player values.

Hi, I'm Matthew Moskovciak at CNET.com and we're gonna take a look at the LG BD670 Blu-ray player which is currently selling for $180. LG has a no-frills approach to its Blu-ray players, especially on the design. There's just a simple glossy front panel with a disc tray on the left and a few buttons on the right. The included remote is good, although we would have liked a button that let us jump right to LG's Smart TV interface. The BD670 can also be controlled by a smartphone with apps available on both iOS and Android, although it's not that useful since the app doesn't have a keyboard you can use for searching on services like Netflix. Now, on the features side, there's 3D Blu-ray support, built-in Wi-Fi, and it's packed with streaming media services including Netflix, Amazon Instant, MLB.tv, VUDU, Cinema Now, and Pandora. It uses an updated interface for Netflix so you can search and browse titles that aren't in your Instant Queue. Now, competitors like Samsung and Sony technically have more streaming services overall, but LG's collection of services is one of our favorites and its simple, straightforward layout is the best we've seen this year. Around the back are the standard outputs including HDMI and an optical audio output. We also put the BD670 through our full series of image quality tests and it performed very well. However, these days, nearly every player has virtually identical image quality, especially for Blu-ray movies, so it shouldn't be a big factor when you're making a buying decision. When we tested disc loading speeds, the BD670 was a little slower than the average 2011 Blu-ray player, and that's really the major drawback to this model. It's not a huge difference compared to other models, but Sony and Panasonic's players are faster so, if that's an important feature, this may not be the best player for you. So, overall, despite disc loading speeds that are just a little below average, the LG BD670's built-in Wi-Fi and excellent streaming media suite make it one of the best Blu-ray player values out there today. I'm Matthew Moskovciak from CNET and this is the LG BD670.
