Kodak PlayFull
Hey, I'm Josh Goldman, senior editor for CNET, and this is a look at the Kodak PlayFull.
It's Kodak's smallest mini camcorder that's capable of shooting in full HD resolution.
That's 1080p at 30 frames per second to make the PlayFull this small, though it uses built-in rechargeable battery, so there's no swapping out for a new one and a tiny 1.5-inch LCD.
The screen is bright.
It has excellent viewing angles and Kodak's glare shield feature helps you when you're in direct sunlight, but the size might be just too small for some people.
The screen and battery are probably the biggest sacrifices though since you do get a micro HDMI output and SD card slot on one side and a micro USB port for charging an AV output on the other and a USB arm on top for connecting directly to computer for sharing, transferring, and charging.
The arm feels a bit flimsy, but unless you're really rough on it, it should hold up.
Using the PlayFull is pretty simple.
It starts up quickly and you just press the center button to start recording.
The default resolution is 720p at 30 frames per second, but there is a 60-frame per second option as well and in iPod friendly WVGA resolution and again 1080p.
You can shoot with different effects too.
That's something you do and one should done, you can trim your video or grab a frame for a still photo and then tag them for sharing on a favorite site or sending by e-mail using the share button and the camera's embedded software.
The video quality is very good with 720p movies looking like good DVD quality clips while the 1080p movies are much sharper with nice detail.
Panning the camera quickly will cause judder, but that's typical of these devices and clipped highlights were fairly common in bright scenes.
Low light video while noisy is pretty good without a lot of detail loss, which is good since there is no built-in light for extra lighting.
The PlayFull doesn't have auto focus or macro focus either, so no close up shooting with this.
In the end, it's a very good mini camcorder for the money as long as the screen isn't too small for you.
I'm Josh Goldman and that's the Kodak PlayFull.
