Key features of USB type-C you should know
Apple's latest MacBook surprised everyone by including only a single port for charging, data, and display.
The port uses a new standard USB 3.1 called USB Type-C.
[UNKNOWN], and if you're confused, here's what you need to know.
first off, USB C can supply a lot of power in both directions.
Coming or going, it can pass up to 20 volts or 100 watts.
Enough to charge a computer with power to spare for other connected devices.
The second thing to know is that it's fast.
And at 10 gigabits per second, it's twice the current speed of USB 3.0, matching the original specs for Thunderbolt.
Word is the new MacBook will top out at a transfer speed of five gigabits per second, but that limitation is on Apple.
Next thing to know, it's reversible.
Unlike every USB cable you've ever used, where you never seem to connect it right side up the first time, USB-C fits in either orientation.
Finally, it's also backward compatible with other USB devices.
You'll need an adapter, but if you want your old USB 2.0 hard drive to connect to your USB-C port, it shouldn't be a problem.
So there you go.
Four things worth knowing about USB 3.1 Type C. It's super small, super fast, and I'm sure we're gonna be seeing a lot more of it.
