XCAR: Jaguar XJ Ultimate: Sometimes too much isn't enough

The Jaguar XJ Ultimate is a version of the car we all know with the dials turned up to 11. The XCAR team took turns as passenger and driver to see if it 's worth going the extra mile.

-This morning, we have a very rare Jaguar in the XCAR car park. It's a car designed for people that like a little bit of extra luxury. What we've devised is a test of two parts. Is it best to drive or is it better to be a passenger? But to do that, we're gonna need an extra person. So, we've drafted in our very own, Drew Stern. Hello, Drew. -Hello. I'm seeing this as 510 brake horsepower and a 5-liter supercharged V8, I'll be driving first. -All right. -Thank you very much. -Just take me somewhere nice. Driver, if you would. -Don't push it. -Yeah. Nice and drive. -Mind your toes. -Yeah. -I will take you to a high-end restaurant, one where we don't even have to leave the car? -Oh, this sounds very exclusive. There's a privacy screen so that people can't, you know, look over my shoulder. -Uh-huh. -People looking in really isn't a problem 'cause the shoulder lines are really high. -Yeah. How much horsepower did you say this has? -It's got around 510. Jesus! -Yeah, I counted all of them there. -Please don't get us arrested, driver. -Do you not have diplomatic immunity? -I don't have diplomatic immunity, and either way it's just being revoked. -I'll take you out sport now. -Please do. The seat is massaging a very, very, very clenched buttock. Also, back here, we've got a few tricky things. So, in the back of this seat is a television. We've also got iPads, but this car has an awesome party piece. It's a space station. That's the table. Check that out. And you can also extend it, comes up so you can turn it for over your lap and have your laps [unk]. Also, under here are a couple of rather lovely champagne flutes because the piece de resistance of this car, a chilled champagne holder. And this car comes with a bottle of Pol Roger. To make this car a little bit more luxurious, Jaguar has done a little bit of tuning, so it's not for the sport. I mean, this has the giant jazzy engine which is great. If so, you are Jason Statham and I'm a crim on the way to a job. But they fiddled with the air suspension at the rear for more luxury. This is the comfiest you will ever get in the back of a Jaguar XJ without, you know, going out with a contortionist. So, to drive them kind of spill the beans. -It is just as powerful as the standard XJ. -Yeah. -It feels just as nimble. -Uh-huh. -In sport mode, it's really responsive. -Yes, it is, isn't it? -It is. -Yes, it goes very, very quickly especially at the back. -You think it's going to be a car built for the comfort of the passengers,-- -Uh-huh. -but it is actually quite a lot of fun to drive. -As a passenger, it's like sitting in a motorized throne. It's very comfy. The seat massager is lovely. My back is still warm from the seat which-- -Yeah. -I think, if you're sitting there long enough, will make you infertile. It's very, very warm. But then the seat cooler is rather pleasant. -Could you have a nap? -Oh, quite easily, yeah,-- -Uh-huh. -maybe without you driving. This is chauffeur driving 101. It's nice and smooth on the controls. -But where is the excitement? -The idea is you're there in the back having a bit of a nap. -I can totally do that. -Ooh. -Are you-- Are you having a bit of a moment? -Ooh, you talk like a poet. Ooh. -While you're busy enjoying yourself, I'm just gonna talk about what this car is like upfront. My first impression, I have this when I got in it this morning was actually really claustrophobic up here. -Well, I was okay 'cause in a performance car, you kind of imagine you're going to be in a bit tighter. So, maybe, that's the impression I got. -But this isn't-- well, is a performance car, but, you know, you can get a 3-liter diesel. It's where the roof comes in. -But that's the cabin, and-- -Yes. -well, how is it to drive? -You do get a nice dose of feedback. So, if you just move the air just as slightly, you know exactly where the wheels are and what resistance they're under which is nice. It's something that you could, say, overlook for a chauffeur car 'cause as long as the car gets where it's going, driver doesn't really-- doesn't really factor into it. You do get sort of massive sways of torque just where you want it, so you can sort of gently waft up the ref range or you could do that. Oh, my lord. -That's more like it. -That is more like it. Do you hear the supercharger? -Yeah. -You don't get that in the back. You just get noise and pin to your seat, but up here, oh, supercharger whine, yes, please. -So, you need to get from London to Berlin, you can fly there in two hours, three hours. -Yeah, with all the [unk] all the bags, the security-- -All the check in, all that. -and getting undressed for the man with the gloves-- -Or you jump in this car, you go down to the channel tunnel, have your driver drive you onboard and you drive half a continent to Berlin with all your 3G iPad toys, digital TV, relaxing champagne, but it takes 12 hours. -I take the car, you know. Flying is very convenient, very quick, but for the price of, say, a business class ticket on BA to Berlin, you can easily hustle this across the continent. You can stop whenever you want. You don't have to sort of-- Well, you don't have to turn off your electrical devices at any point. -The luxury, the tech, the toys, it's just-- it's just all here. -[unk] Are you all right? Drew? Oh, I hate it when people do that. So inconsiderate.
