Jackie Kashian isn't here for lame 'female comic' questions (Tomorrow Daily 375)

On today's show we deep dive into 3D printed habitats for fish, the maybe terrible idea of teaching robots pain, and of that really cool city scanner replica that that guy made on YouTube. Also one of our favorite stand-up comics stopped by, Jackie Casian will be here to tell us all about her podcast and doing stand-up. In the world. We also check out a really great Back It or Hack It update. Not quite a Back It or Hack It but it's really important and it's gonna be really cool. So, welcome to the show. It's Tomorrow Daily. We didn't say we were the best cold opens in the universe, okay? Nope, never made any claims to that effect. Never. I'm Ashley Esqueda. And I'm Jeff Cannata. It's my favorite time of the week. We get to deep-dive into those topics, and we get to incorporate your feedback. It was a really interesting week of stuff. It was fun, get out your nose plugs, let's dive in. [electronic music] People really enjoyed the 3D Printed Aquarium. How could you not? It's amazing. It is pretty amazing. Misawa Design Institute released Waterscape, which is a series of 3D printed Aquarium. First of all, this video is very relaxing. I feel like I want this as a loop on my television as a screensaver. Like they should just release this. There you go. Constant loop just showing me adorable little fish inside a 3D printed landscape. But I love this because it is so minimalist. It's not life-changing. We talked about this on Tuesday, it's not life-changing, it's not gonna cure cancer, it's not robots that are gonna come seal the holes in your stomach or whatever, but it is really pretty to look at, and [CROSSTALK]. I'm surprised that somebody hasn't already done this. I didn't think of it, but now that I'm looking at it I feel like it's a no-brainer. Because we're talking about these ideas of architecture and about doing things and pushing the limits. And the fact that 3-D printing can let us do things that we weren't able to do before. It seems so obvious now to do that on a small scale with creatures This size, but also then, you get- Scale up? Yeah, you can integrate this with nature in a really beautiful, evocative way. Sure, yeah, and I really like this idea of We, a lot of times, I think, recently, especially, we were kind of getting a little bit back into a beautiful design. Right An architecture and I think 3D printing is really a part of the catalyst for them. I think, there are so many things that we can do, there are so many options available to us. There are so many, Materials that we can print with. But I think it's really exciting for people in design to be able to sort of create these things. Like that bridge in Amsterdam. It's been 3D printed. Like these are incredible pieces of infrastructure that not only Serve a very good function, and they work very well because they're well-designed and well-engineered, but they're also beautiful. Right. They're beautiful to look at. And that's to me one of the more exciting things about the future is that it's just gonna all look prettier. [LAUGH] I don't mean that in a sense of You know it's just I really love that idea. Someday I want to live in that futuristic society where everything looks futuristic. And this reminds me of that and it makes me feel good. I think the reason it reminds you of that is because we're at this place where we can create things that don't have to be made from other smaller parts. They can just be Printed.>>Built.>>As one unit from start to finish with whatever crazy wacky design works. I think these aquariums they look futuristic because we've never been able to do that before. Right. They're like one piece very provocative. Like it's really cool. How much would you pay for something like that? I mean I don't want fish. Like let's say 18 by 18 tank. I have a feeling these things will be really expensive. But they shouldn't be. They shouldn't be. They'll come down over time, I mean I'm sure. The one problem with fish tanks is sealing them. That's the really big challenge where it's like these types of air bubbles are able to put actual Land plants and to be, I mean it's amazing. It's incredible stuff. It really opens it up to whatever we can imagine now can be. I'd say under a thousand would be an appropriate price currently, like currently as ti were. A lot for fish. Well yeah, but some people really like to have these like beautiful things in their house. It's a luxury item. It's a luxury item. Yeah and even look at people's like nano aquarium, so they have the coral reef there. I mean they spent Thousands and thousands of dollars. That just seems like a lot of money for a thing that my fish is going to commit suicide out of. That's a good point. Well, they can't get out. They'll never escape. We have some really good user feedback you guys. Kieran wrote in and said "Having experience with just basic glass boxes as fish tanks, I'd take a 3D printed tank any day. Yeah. 500 bucks? Seems reasonable. #HEYTD Wow people are willing to throw a lot of money at this. It's like you've got to understand the engineering of this. It's not just it's a fine piece of Furniture is not something cheap. Fish furniture. Yeah. Derrick Robertson said, 'Why should fish have all the fun stuff? How about 3D printed houses for those of us in the human community?' That's already being worked on. [CROSSTALK] Yeah. We have those. People are working on 3D printed homes. We've seen something I'm really excited about, 3D printed Studios where you're able to get sort of a 3D printed sort of a, it's not a shed, but it's a guest house. Right, freestanding structure. But they're standalone. It's a freestanding structure. And you can actually just put one in your backyard. And you can just have someone move in. You know what I realize I want for this fish tank thing? I want them to make one in the form of a bicycle. So that when people say I need that as much as a fish needs a bicycle. I can be like well I got my fish my fish have a bicycle. a bike. I've never heard somebody say that. No? It's okay. I'll take it. Bono says it. SpikeTiger wrote, but where's the speaker for game noises, maybe even some voice acting? So you'll have a little speaker, and it'll have the fish talking at you I guess. I guess, yeah, that's the old Seaman game. Yeah, well maybe SpikeTiger meant that about the city scanner. I think probably. But maybe he replied to that show. You gotta tell us what you're talking about you guys. [LAUGH] I think so. I'm just gonna assume you're talking about the fish tank. I was like that doesn't make [LAUGH] It doesn't make any sense. You're so right. Now that I'm saying out loud. It doesn't make any sense. I like how you figured it out so as it was happening.>>> On air. Yeah, I figured it out.>>> That's pretty amazing. Listen Maguay. Okay. So bestie costume. Listen Maguay. We made some mistakes. Mistakes were made. That's alright. Mistakes were made but we're correcting them live on the air. So I think that the one thing that's missing for me would be a filter. Because you don't want to have to clean that thing out it would get really gross. How would you even clean that thing out? I'd just print another one. Yeah exactly. Disposable fish tank, boom. Disposable fish tank, so you just throw them out. I want to see what those fish tanks look like in three weeks. Paula's goldfish in there. A lot dirtier. So our show [CROSSTALK] Especially they're all white. Yeah, that's gonna be dirty fast. Let's talk about teaching robots pain, cuz I think this is a pretty interesting concept. Why? I know, you love the Simpsons reference. Yeah. Okay, the Simpsons reference. This is a Paris scientist who thinks that teaching a robot, so you see they tap it, And this is a biotack fingertip sensor they have added on the ability for it to understand like that's light pain. Light pain. Like tapping somebody. Moderate pain. And if you push it a little bit, that's moderate pain. I like this sad the painful face. And then they're water boarding it later. That is terrible, they're going to saw it's arm off, this robotic arm it's going to be just like saw. So yeah, repetitive contact, so tap, tap, tap. So they're trying to teach it to understand, quote unquote, pain, which really is more damage. Yeah. They want this robot to understand when it is potentially being damaged, and then how to respond to that. So Obviously you put your hot hand on a curling iron like I did today, you will retract it very quickly because it hurts. But not quick enough. Not quick enough. My forehead is in a lot of pain today. [LAUGH] I thought it was a pulled hair, it was terrible. So yeah, so here's a cup of hot boiled water like you can see is temperature pain and different things like, I gotta get my hand away from that. The whole reasoning is robots, because they can't feel pain, are more prone to being injured, so to speak, or disabled, somehow broken because they don't really understand when you stop. Right. They don't get what the threshold is for them to be like, if I do this next thing Probably gonna break my arm off, like maybe I shouldn't do that. Yes, and that's exactly what our nervous system is there for, it tells us, "Hey, avoid those things." Yeah. And I've always thought, I've always put forth the hypothesis, that my nervous system treats me like an idiot. Yeah. That's why it's called the nervous system, not the chill system. Right, but I don't need to have physical discomfort to stop doing that. There could be a better way Evolution to figure that out, tell me to avoid that process. And in the same you know in the same respect this isn't actually pain. It's not giving the robot discomfort. It's a warning. It's like a warning system. It is just a relay system that says hey avoid that and pull back. Yeah, do not do this. Right. And maybe that's all pain is as well and we interpret it as discomfort. So maybe I mean that's kind of a trippy concept.>>Well we interpreted it separate cause it hurts. But i well you have a point. But If I was A robot can't do that, a robot can't interpret it as discomfort.>>That's why I think it was a misnomer. To say it's teaching it pain. It's teaching it to avoid certain Danger. Stimuli. They avoid danger. Right. Could be avoid injury. But it's not doing it by transferring the robot discomfort. Fair enough. But so in that sense, I think it's a good idea because obviously we're all gonna have very expensive robots in the future. Yeah, you don't wanna set your boiling water on it. At first an assistant. And you're gonna need them to watch out for themselves. Yeah. Because you can't watch them all the time. Yeah. You're gonna be living a life of leisure. Exactly. You're gonna be getting massages and I don't know- Staring at your fish tank. riding in a yacht. Yeah, staring at a [UNKNOWN] fish tank while your robot does all your work for you. Right. You don't want that robot to break itself. That's what I think. Right. We had great, great feedback, much more serious than ours. [LAUGH] Funnythorn wrote in and said, "Measure pain to accomplish a task to avoid task that can damage human. Then redesign the way of work or develop appropriate tools." I like that. Well, actually he makes a very, very good point because this video shows pain that would be pain to a human, but if you could The idea of having a robot walk into an environment and only the things that damage the robot are registering as pain. Right. That's the understanding. Right. So things that It still would be a very useful robot because things that we can't experience, it could still experience up to a much higher threshold. Sure. Yeah. No, I like that. And then Kieran, again, Kieran very talkative this week, which thank you I encourage your talkativeness, wrote in and said, the robot's just reacting to pain through a degree in sensitivity of touch, right? So, finding an actual use for this is hard. And I think you're right there where's it's a gauge of touch. Like, there's a touch gauge there where it's like, I pressed it harder. And it's like, that I think is not really, that's sort of the example. Yeah. And then the application would be teaching to say like, hey, if I This slope is very steep and if I go up this slope I'm potentially gonna injure myself. Like, what are the odds, you gotta calculate that and then say, well, the risk is there, it's too high. Like, the threshold- I'm not doing that. Let's say it's a 70% chance of me. It's just like saying if I get on a skateboard There is a really chance that I am going to fall off of it. So I don't do that. So I just don't get on skateboards. Some people say, "there's a high chance", but I don't care. I'm going to get on it anyway. Right. It's the "devil may care" robot. That's right. Super cool robot. So cool, extreme bot. Because it doesn't care about pain. I think the video here is showing the reaction, to what it would do, it would move out of the way. Retracting, yeah. Stuff like that. It's just there for demonstration purposes. Also, god, we've seen so many robotic arm videos that I just want one now. I don't even know what it would do but I feel like I want one at my house. High fives. Yeah, high fives when I come in from home, that would be. That was like too hard, that was pain. I know it's like High five. Get a ride on Uber and high five police. So our very last thing, we'll just touch on very briefly, is the city scanner drone, which people really liked. What's not to like? That thing is amazing! I want more people to make things. In real life. That only exists in video games. Like, he even found a cool Half-Life environment. Like abandoned, I dig it. The thing is, it's huge. That's one thing I like the most. It's got the light on the top. I've been in a situation where it came right at me and asked me things. Yeah. And I love how it retracts, the outside of this retracts. Dead on. It's incredible. I'm into it. I want a little microphone attachment so I can just be like, attention citizens. I know, where's Gordon Freeman? Look how rad this is. I love, it's so amazing. I'm so impressed. These are the times where I wish. I wish people could sell them. Because- Yeah. It's like, yes, I get it. It's a licensing issue. Companies have to protect their IP, but, for example, if I could get a, like remember the portal turrets? That That they sent to companies, that were fully working Portal. I want that. Vaporizing people, just right and left? Yeah, they would just be like I'm different. And I was just like I want one. I gotta get a Portal chart in my house. I see See you, hello. Are there other hovering things from fiction that we could mod actual drones into? I mean I think that we've seen a few things in maybe a Not Children of Men, but Minority Report. Yeah, what are the? I want more drone mods like this cuz this is cool. Things that scan your face. There's a lot of that kind of stuff where it's like I'm scanning you. Why hasn't somebody made a mini What's the droid from Empire Strikes Back, that goes to Hoth, and they find at the beginning? Yeah. What's it called? I can hear it making the sound right now. [INAUDIBLE] [SOUND]. Yeah, yeah. I can hear the sound. Why isn't nobody made that? Get on that, people! Come on nerds. I wanna see. We need more of these kinds of mod. Well, you guys nailed it, all those weirdo, assorted credits. You do a lot of stuff. Yeah I'm working, it turns out. And I fix, I like to knock on particle board. Yeah. [LAUGH] Yeah, we don't even know what this is made of. Very. Strange space material. Knock on paper, it's fine. All of the sudden I will fight you. And so it is, yeah, so I do a bunch of that. I do standup, and then I do a couple of podcasts. The podcast with Jackie and Laurie is about. It's on Nerdist. It's called The Jackie and Laurie Show and it is entirely about stand up comedy. Laurie Kilmartin is a writer at Conan and a stand up comic and a mom and I am a stand up comic and we talk about. And I do the road a lot. So I go on the road a lot. Okay. And so we talk about Just what it's like. Laurie Killmartin. The war stories. The war stories and six months, There's only 20 episodes. You can get in on the ground floor of the show, folks. But the crazy thing is that there's. Laurie came to me and she said, when you're a soman comic, every time you are interviewed, Some says to you, [LAUGH] what's it like being a woman comic? Doing stand-up comedy as a woman. Cross out one of my questions. Exactly. Don't ask that. Well you can, but the answer is, I wouldn't know any other You know, I'm not transgender. What's it like being a man comic? I assume it's somewhat like that but with more people wanting to touch your boobs. That seems to be the entirety of it. Yeah. But so, Laurie said, do you wanna have that conversation every week? And I said, that's hilarious. [LAUGH] And it was hilarious, cuz she has to do all this research for Conan, so she's constantly coming up with people Who don't like women comics who think women aren't funny. I have spent 30 years doing stand up comedy avoiding all of those comments and whenever anyone's asked me, I guess Jerry Lewis doesn't like women comics? That's like the one person I can think of where I'm like, okay that's somebody who has very publicly said women aren't funny. Sounds like a very antiquated idea though. I mean we have So many great women comics, and yourself among them. Right. And it's even more beyond antiquated, because we've had so many great female comics, even in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. [CROSSTALK]- He had to have known very funny women. Of course. But somebody asked me about it, I was like, I don't have an answer to that, cuz he doesn't affect, what does he book? He doesn't book anything. Is he booking hyenas? I've always wanted to get in the hyenas chain. [LAUGH] So. So you guys talk about your personal experiences doing stand up but do you talk about stand up sort of in the abstract as well? Yeah, yeah we break down new bits that we're working on and stuff like that. And it is fascinating. I think it's fascinating. And people are on board. They're very interested in it. I didn't know. I knew that there were comedy dorks I knew that there were people who want to- This guy. Yeah, me right here. This guy right here and this lady right there. Double hands. Who do you guys like? Who are some of your faves? There's to many we're in a golden age. We are in a true, there's so many good, well it's also because of access. I mean we have so many ways to get comedy out there that You can find a nobody in the middle of nowhere and really love that comedian. And connect in a way that you're like, that person is exactly for me. They get me. They [UNKNOWN] 12 strongest fans in the world. Yeah. And there can be comedy for everyone now. Yeah, I mean I've discovered people. I mean, I'm a big Hannibal Buress fan. Yeah. I've discovered people Because of the internet. Like I didn't see them live first. I saw them on the internet first. Me too, me too. Wow, okay. Yeah. You know. It's just kind of cool yeah. Love him so funny. Adorable. I love seeing Sarah Silverman anytime she does stand up over at Largo. Yeah. I love the smaller venues with her because she's like have a lot of Fun with the crowd and everything. I did a show with her. There's a comic book store in Hollywood, the Meltdown and they have a little nerd melt nerdus bag there and it's amazing because I did a show, it was with her and Zach Galafanakis. And I don't know who I was shooting next to but I was like do they need us? [INAUDIBLE] We can each do 25 and it'd be good. But you get to try new stuff at [UNKNOWN] so [INAUDIBLE]. My favorite thing about seeing a show at [UNKNOWN] is. Is everybody does like five minutes on being in a comic book store. Right. [LAUGH] The first time you do that group, you're like, yes. And I usually suggest that someone should pick something up, and then I may, just because I tend to read a lot of Comic book That's good you've got Chris. So Dork Forest, your other podcast, has that kind of stuff right? Right, it can be traditional dorktoms where its video games and board games. Board games. Board games. My God table top Yeah, yeah. Love it. I am working on a board game. My husband is a game designer. Really? A video game designer. And he does. Cool. We are the coolest aunt and uncle that you [LAUGH] would ever meet. A little comedy, a little gaming. The best. Yeah so he has like a RP, he For money he makes video games. And then last summer, he had a slow summer, his contract. So he was like "I think I'm finally going to make my super hero table top RPG game. Awesome. Called the hero instant. That sounds cool. The hero instant, you guys. How can we find out more about it? Well, turns out you can go to the heroinstant.com which he didn't know spelled heroin. [LAUGH] But I love him. I need that game. It's so fun. I made Firebike Mike, which he has fire powers and he rides a motorcycle and he's also a detective you guys. So he's super smart. So you could have any powers. Any super powers. But he's also working on board games, and he helps sink all the siblings trouble, which was a story-telling game, that you can play with little kids. Well, not little kids, like eight or nine. Right. Sure. Everybody has to tell a story. So sibling trouble is super fun. Stoke your imagination. Amazing. Yea, So anyways it can be about traditional games then. So yea it can be board games and video games and books and and science fiction and stuff like that but it can also be, like I just booked this woman she's going to come talk about roller derby. Wow! I don't know anything about roller derby. Yea. I understand that people are on roller skates. Have you ever been to a derby game? I have not. They have the Derby Dolls, L.A. Derby is here. Really? Yeah. Apparently people love it. You can go. They have a whole season where they have other teams come. Because it's a sport. It's a thing. [CROSSTALK] It's real? [CROSSTALK] Yeah. I thought it was kind like Russian wrestling, where it was Kind of not. No, but they are skating and knocking into each other and they throw each other around. I mean it's crazy. I don't know what the scoring is, I\m hoping to find out. Yeah, yeah. It's really fascinating. I love Roller Derby like I just find the whole concept really interesting and if I actually had any coordination whatsoever, I might try it. But I don't. So I just avoid that. I don't think that's a good idea. Violent. No, no. Yes, that it is. You might have missed your window. Yeah, I think I missed my time. I think it's past my expiration date on roller derby. Roller derby, a woman's game. That it is, that it is. Would you also, I think be really tall? Even though they look tall, maybe because they are on roller skates. You are tall, Terrifying maybe in skates, cuz then that's like after four inches. Which I think is intimidating, and might- Maybe scare people. Help you get some work. That would be good. Yeah, so it has been about bees and flowers. And there was a comic out of. And then there's famous-y people. I know a lot of comics, so I've had Moon Zappa was just on, and she was talking about linens. [LAUGH] She really likes sheets. Really a sheet- Anything you're super into, right? Yeah, anything you're super into. I had her sister Diva Zappa on, and she talked about knitting. And then I had, Greg Proops has one of the greatest episodes with The History of Baseball, and I don't know anything about sports. Nothing, nothing. And it was fascinating. He did the history of baseball from the Civil War Up to 1938. And it was personality-driven. Yeah, it was crazy. And- Sounds great. Yeah. And it's a safe space, right? Yeah. You can come to me- Yeah. With whatever you're into, and if I'm not into it, like I don't know anything about chess. You can learn about it. I bet you learned a lot though. I did learn a lot- Yeah. And I ask the questions that people who don't know anything, because I am more than willing You're the audience. You're the audience's eyes.>> I am the audience. WHen it's about music there's a little drinking game that rangers of the dark force like to play which is, how many of these bands, does Jackie think that's a band, does she think it's a member of the band. [LAUGH] I like it a lot.>> Somebody was talking about The Who the other day and I was like. That is a band and she looked at me and she was like yeah it's a band, and I said One of the biggest in the world But there was a stampede and she's like well that's not what they're known for and I was like well they had a lot of albums too and she's like stop talking, we're done, and I was like you could come and talk to me about The Who on The Dork Forest and then I would know more. Somebody came and talked about Pink Floyd. I don't know anything about Pink Floyd. I saw The Wall. Now you do. Now I know a little bit more. That's awesome. Pretty good stuff. Sure. So you have a standup, a special coming up? No, my special it dropped a little over a year and a half ago. I'm working on a new album. That's the horrorcraft This one right? Yeah the horcrux. This Will Make an Excellent Horcrux is the name of my last album and also a DVD special. Fantastic. For all those Harry Potter fans out there, you should definitely [INAUDIBLE]. Harry Potter, it's cuz my soul is in it you guys. [LAUGH] My soul. Soul's inside. [LAUGH] Spoilers for Harry Potter I guess. Yeah, [LAUGH] Yikes. If you've not read those books, watch the movies. So sad, to bad. You know what it's a little late, I'm sorry. It's 15 years later, that's Rosebud is a sled. My God. We can safely say, Rosebud is a sled. Has it been 15 years since Harry Potter? I'm so She started writing it mid 90s. 90s, yeah. So, the book- What a world. Might have been earlier than that. Time flies. Yeah. Time has certainly flown. So, I'm really curious about, you mentioned Lady Dynamite. Yeah. And I know that you do, not with [CROSSTALK] Yeah, I've known Maria. Maria Danford is the star of Lady Dynamite on Netflix. It's a great show. My God. It's crazy fun. It's the Arrested Development and the South Park lady. It's the guy who produced Arrested Development and the woman who produced South Park, have come together with Maria Bamford- Unholy union. Yeah. Unholy union of Maria Bamford's mental illnesses. And a cacophany of just pills. Somehow, it works. It totally works. But truly yeah, it totally works. Because much like Arrested Development works and much like [UNKNOWN] works, I think that's how much Lady Dynamite works, because it's so crazy and awesome- Yeah. And it's so layered. Yeah. And but I've known, Maria and I, well, I started stand-up before Maria, but she started in like '92 in Minneapolis. We're both Minneapolis comics. And so I've known her since 1992 And now that she's kind of a big deal, I was like, Can I ride your coattails as far as you will let me? You can drop me off anywhere in the middle. Buy a shuttle ticket. So I get to open for her on the road sometimes so that's really fun because her audiences are usually Just the nicest people because of the mental illness, and trying to be supportive of people with mental illness. They're super understanding, but they're also hilariously- They're there to have a good time. Willing to hear what weirdo joke you're working on. Yeah, yeah. Go there because their Maria's fans. And then I, oddly enough cause I also worked just regular clubs, just headlining and stuff like that. But I get to fancy open for Maria Branford and I get to open for Brian Regan/g.>>Ah that's different.>>Very funny. But he doesn't probably want to be described as this, but I think of him as the Captain America of stand-up comedy. Because he goes across America constantly? Because he goes across America? Yeah, let's tell him that. [LAUGH] Because he's such a good guy. His stand up is Super silly but very smart. Yeah, he's one of my favorites too. He's so great. He's great It's a masterclass in standup comedy just getting to open for either of them because I get to watch their standup comedy Yeah. And to watch for hour long sets of either one of them is insane. So if anybody's out there thinking I want to get into standup comedy, [CROSSTALK] I would say it's quite a bit different now that it was even ten years ago. True. It's so so different. Especially will digital media and being able to self-publish. What is your recommendation? Obviously you know here in Los Angeles there are lots of places to go? To go? Yeah if you can find an open mike night. But what about for the people who grow up in places where there are not opportunities to go do open mike night? Right. If you're in New Albany, Mississippi and you want to start doing stand up comedy, You probably have to start your own open mic. I mean, I've met a bunch of guys and women who have done that in Alabama. There's a southern network of just- because there aren't enough crops down there. There's some one nighter stuff and some weekend rooms that are just four walling. But if you live near an open mic, obviously, go do an open mic. Don't freak out about it because they're only going to give you four minutes you guys. Three, four minutes tops. So pick like three four minute topics. Just pick three or four topics to talk about that you think are funny. Say them out loud, and then get off stage. And then run as fast as you can. [LAUGH] Run for life. That, I've got to say, from experience that three to five minutes, that's a really long time. It's a long time the first time. [LAUGH] Actually, it feels like Forever. Especially all eyes are on you and you're just like, God. It's not helping. [LAUGH] You get through it. That's the point. You get through it, and you feel better about it, and then you've got to get through it. I will say this about that, though. You are correct, the fact that you will know immediately after doing your first open mic whether you want to continue to do open mic or you want to. True. Can do standup at all. Because the first time I did it I'm sure I ate it, I'm sure it was terrible but I remember going I think I've got like one or two left. That was super fun. And then it was like the heroin instant. I was in. I was on board. You had super powers. I had the super powers of getting to talk about what I wanted to talk about and try to make people laugh. It's genuinely the most. Fun in my life. Wanna talk about an interesting special Back It or Hack It. Yeah, this has to do with stand-up comedy too as well. It does, let's check it out. I can't tell you to back this or hack this because it's already done. It's been done for a year, right? Almost a year. Somewhere around there. Quincy Jones not the record producer. Not the thriller guy?>> No. Quincy Jones is a comedian, stand up comic, He was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of cancer, stage four. Yikes. A year ago. And, I believe it's his friend, asked him, what do you, what's your bucket list? What do you want to do more than anything in the world? And he said, I just want a stand up comedy special. I want. So she went on Kickstarter, started a Kickstarter. Amazing. And she said, it'll cost about $5,000. It wasn't a lot. And they ended up getting well over $50,000. That's amazing. So amazing. And then Ellen DeGeneres Then Ellen DeGeneres got involved and she was like, we're gonna make sure that we help. So she had him on the show and then he's been doing stand-up all of his life. And then she surprised him by saying, hey [UNKNOWN], we got HBO to run your stand-up special. Amazing. So that is what I am going to tell you about right now, which is the Quincy Jones stand-up special tonight on HBO. Gonna air tonight There he is. He decided the thing that made him happiest was stand up comedy. That's incredible. Which he's performing and making people laugh. And he is like I'm gonna spend my last days. This is an incurable form of cancer. He's like, I'm gonna spend my last days Is making people laugh. That's incredible. That's my goal in life, I'm gonna go do it. And it's here, it's finally here. It filmed I think back in April. And I think this was at Teragram Ballroom, I'm not 100% sure. And yeah, so he did a stand up special. And it looks really, really funny. And he's a funny, funny guy, so funny. That is absolutely inspiring. Yeah. And Heartwarming and magical. It is super great. Magical I am just. Honestly, like, I always love, these sort of, even though we didn't cover it a year ago. I love the idea of bringing it up today on something that was a crowd funding An effort that just went so far above and beyond what their wildest dreams were about it and the fact that it happened and that you know so many people will be getting joy out of this, including Quincy. So many times we get these crowd funded stories That lead us to be a little more cynical about the platform itself when things don't meet their goals. Failures. People ripped off stuff, it takes twice as long, it isn't what they promised, yada yada. And I think this kind of story proves why crowdfunding is a special kind of thing. And can actually be used for such good purposes. Yeah. And can make something happen that was going to be impossible. Change somebody's life Yeah Change somebody's life, Change a lot of people's lives. So really cool this happened, so if you are so inclined. Let's do it. All right. [MUSIC] Jeff, what in the world are you into? Well, you know I'm a comic book reader. And I enjoy the comic books. Big, big events this summer as is often the case with the big publishers. DC is doing something pretty exciting. It's called Rebirth. Every few years, evidently, DC needs to Wipe the slate clean and start over and give their characters new back stories and change all the art and writing teams on books and just kind of throw the whole DC Universe into chaos. They did it with the New 52 a while back. Rebirth- Okay. is another one of those sort of wipe the slate clean. So this is not part of the New 52? Well this is sort of a reaction to the new, this is throwing all that out and starting [LAUGH] a new again. Okay. And it's pretty exciting, the one shot, which came out last week, Jeff Johnsoro, it's a big 80-page, massive one shot that has one of the most exciting endings to a comic book I've ever seen. I'm not going to spoil anything. Hopefully you can avoid spoilers if you haven't read this or haven't heard about it or are curious. I may have seen a spoiler. I'm going to ask you about it after the show. Yeah it's pretty unexpected, pretty wild. It's audacious what they're doing. Kind of taking things that you didn't think should be here and doing some stuff with it. Pretty cool stuff. Then this week, just yesterday, on Wednesday The sort of, each character's rebirth first issue is out. Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, Green Arrow. And they all each get their own genesis. Yeah. It's big changes for all those characters and it's going to be interesting going forward. It's pretty exciting, you know, I'm a Marvel zombie from way back, but I love the DC characters also and I think always interesting to see them throw out the rules and start with new rules and I think if you were disappointed by Batman v. Superman like I was, here's a way to get excited about these characters again. Did you see the trailer for the recut director's version? I did not. The trailer's actually pretty good. Is it? Yeah, but the cinematographer for the movie was like "if you hated it, you'll still hate it." [LAUGH] But Saul was really honest, he tweeted back today. Fair enough. I was, well, okay then. I am really into something that I will never be able to afford, which is the Star Wars Collectibles, the Ultimate Studio Edition. I don't know if you guys saw this, this week. Man. First of all, why have we not done this before? I mean the technology is finally here. So this video that Star Wars put out this week they are like, Here is what we decided to do. So like we decided we're going to take original models of the actual props in the movie And we're gonna digitally scan them and literally create perfect replicas that you could swap on camera in a Star Wars movie and not tell the difference. That's how good they are. And we're gonna give them as a give to hosts on Tomorrow Daily. Yeah Yes and we're going to get all eight are going to come for free? No, they didn't say that. Why would they say that? Look at how amazing that is, that's Ray's staff. So there they are scanning it as with laser technology, this laser scanning into a 3-D model and they are making them and they are Gorgeous. I mean, these are screen ready prop replicas. You cannot get better than this. This is you have your own prop department now. Pretty much. You've for your own prop department. Well, this is the prop company that worked on Star Wars: The Force Awakens. This is not a third party, live Novis makes really great prop replicas. But it's not the same. This is the company that actually Actually did the props to the movie. They were like, hey, we have access to them. Why don't we laser scan them and then sell them to you guys? So, they got Chewie's bow caster, which is stunning. Yeah, I like this. They've got Poe Dameron's helmet. They've got Darth Vader's melted helmet, which is amazing. They have- That's perfect for my shrine. I know right? Your Kylo Ren costume which you carries around. Where I would sit and brewed. Sit and brewed at night and then like slam it different ashes. Yeah. And then they have bloodstained storm trooper helmets. Amazing, but some of them there only doing limited editions of, and- How great are the- They are expensive. I'm sure they are. How great are the fan films gonna be with this stuff? Pretty good. Yeah. I'm really looking forward to that. I hope they do more of this, and I know that it's really expensive. I think it ranges from $1,500 to $3,500, which I'm like that is a computer and a virtual reality rig. So no. I gotta say- Yeah, but on the positive side, you got a [UNKNOWN] I would look so sick in a [UNKNOWN] helmet. I mean, why do you need virtual reality if your real reality could be so spot on. It's true, yeah, so I mean, it's really expensive. If you can afford it, I mean, I'm sure a lot of people are gonna take advantage of this. And I'm sure those limited editions will sell out right away. But I hope they do more of this. And I really hope they do- Okay. Series one of these and then they do series two. That's my question. What's the prop that you want to be in this collection? Han Solo and DL-44. Yeah? Yeah, it's got to be Han Solo and DL-44. Yeah, that's pretty good. I need that. I mean light sabers are like a no-brainer, right. You can already get pretty authentic You can get really good light saber but they do, I think they are doing rays, light saber help too. So, That's pretty cool Next time, you can do that. You can do, I mean there's a lot of stuff So what I want man. But what would you want. Millennium Falcon full-size.
