Is the 2016 911 GT3 RS the best Porsche money can buy?

I like the word extreme, it says pretty much everything it needs to. You can have extreme versions of anything, ironing, fishing even pawn. Anything. You can also get extreme cars, and the new Porsche GTRS may be the most extreme of the lot. [MUSIC] RS is the greatest expressions of 911. The fastest, the hardest, the most mental car in the lineup. Any thoughts of creature comforts can be nixed in this, the fifth iteration, GT3 RS. And though its origins lie in the 70s, if you're looking for a quiet ride, you're looking in the wrong place. [SOUND] [BLANK_AUDIO] The GT3S' lineage goes back a long long way. To the deepest 1970's in fact. You see, Porsche wanted to race a new 911 based car, but to do something it needed to appease the FIA's [UNKNOWN] rules. [MUSIC] The Carrera RSs came with more power, less weight and greater Sporting potential. Porsche made very few of them and nowadays they go for silly, silly money. Why? Because they're basically the purest expression of 911 you can get. The best stuff. The grade A. The RS cars that followed stuck to the same principles. More horses, fewer kilos, and harder springs. They're essentially toned down racing cars. [BLANK_AUDIO] The latest GT 3RS takes the formula and makes it more, or should that be less. I have no idea at this point. [MUSIC] It's ten kilos lighter than the GT3 and already quite light car. It's curb weight sits at 1,420 kilos and its four liter flat six produces 493 brake horsepower and 300 and. 39 pound foot. Porsche says it's good for naught to 62 in 3.3 seconds, and it'll top out at 193 miles an hour. Now that sounds pretty quick to me, but I'll wager some of you are saying it's not fast enough. That'll be for a couple of reasons, the first is for around a 130 K you have a lot of choice. Take the new Audi V 10 plus for example, it's a bit more expensive, but it's ever so slightly quick at the 62, and it will crack 200 miles an hour. The second, well that's because you probably don't know what. What you're all about. Because not a 62 times in top speeds do not a whole car make. Don't get me wrong. I'm just as impressed by tiny [INAUDIBLE] 62 times in high top speeds as the next guy but it's how it gets to those speeds that's more impressive, how well a car can maintain its momentum. [SOUND] [INAUDIBLE] the obvious Space for weight loss. In fact there's no rear seat, a roll case in their place. There's plenty more weight-loss trickery. For example, the bonnet, the bootlid and the front wings are made from carbon fiber reinforced plastic. The roof is made of magnesium, and the Porsche shield on the front on the CTLLS is a sticker. Presumably a very very thin one. The vents on the front wings are there to relieve pressure in the wheel launcher. Full speed engine looks a delicious Corvette and the giant wing on the back also made of carbon fiber and the spoil on the front basically anything that looks like it's here for aerodynamic purposes is here for aerodynamic purposes. It seems to generate downforce over 300 kilos of the stuff, should you require it. That's more than the legendary 997 GT3 RS four liter, a car that many consider to be the strongest of the breed. This is the first GT car to use the turbo's wide body, the vents in its side useful for cooling its engine, girth better for the RS's wider rear track. All the better are putting it's power down. And it's suspension has been fiddled with to make it, well, harder for better cornering. On top of all of that it's engine hasn't escaped fettleing. Forty titanium conrods, forged aluminum pistons and a crank shaft made from the same mega super steel alloy used in the 919 limon winning racer. Now because of all of it, megasporting pretensions, it's not the world's most comfortable car. You can feel every single bump you go over, and it's not really designed for the motorway. There's loads of road noise, and there's also lots of Engine noise. Now the engine is beautiful. Especially if you have the noisy exhaust button pressed and the PDK sports button pressed. Because the PDK sport makes the gearbox really angry. It kinda makes it sound a bit pissed off. It's just a very flick and you're gone. [SOUND] [NOISE] Now here's the thing about the GT3 RS on the road. You can go around pretty much any bend at any speed you like, and you won't really bother it. It has so much grip. We get very, very few cars that Provide you with as much feedback and give you enough confidence to maybe push it a little bit further. Maybe do your job just a little bit better. The car works with you. It's a truly, truly brilliant thing but this, to me, feels a bit like [UNKNOWN]. It's a one percent car. It's a car that 99% of the time is, in fact, great because it really wants to be driven on a track. It really wants to be driven hard and if you Trying to use it for your commute, yeah it'll hack the lumps and bumps, but you'll end up absolutely hating it. This isn't a car you buy because you want a daily run around. this is the car you get when you want something Something fun to take to work every now and then. And you get to know your local track really, really, really well. But what did you expect from a car that's got a pit speed limiter in the console. This thing can lap the ring convincingly quicker than the Carrera GT. It's more of a car designed to go racing. So instead I'm gong to a truck to have a little bit of the play. How forgiving will it be, I wonder. Driving and driving safety. Oh. [LAUGH] [LAUGH] [MUSIC] There are people who doubt the PDK. Trust me on this. Don't doubt the BDK. The BDK is a good thing. It's a very, very good thing. The control is right at your fingertips. It's right there. [NOISE] The [UNKNOWN] panel is so short, you just drop it down. And it's gotten the gearbox is so quick as well. It's so good. [MUSIC] The brakes these are the CCB's, these Porsche carbon ceramic jobbie's. When you need them to work, you can barrel it into a corner, and you can think, am I gonna make this, really? You can have a little bit of a moment of fright, and they just stop you like that. [MUSIC] Then there's the speed of it. You can carry so much. Of speed through the corners. You doubt yourself, you think nah. No, that's too much speed. That's a bit too much, I'm not sure I can get away with that. And the car just does it. [NOISE] [MUSIC] [SOUND] I've been hammering around this track all day and you know what? I haven't felt tired, I haven't felt like oh, I've had enough of this. I haven't felt bored. This thing has made me feel more alive than so many other cars. And it's because this is where it belongs. It's designed to hurl around things like this, carrying all the speed possible, making you feel like an absolute hero. [NOISE] I mentioned earlier, there are faster cars, similar Money. And there are. And they would be awesome around the circuit. But I wonder whether they'll ever be driven somewhere like this, or whether they'll just be there to parade around town. I'm sure there will be people who take them out. But I don't think any of them will feel quite as at home. This car isn't about being the quickest in a straight line. It's not about being the quickest on the autobahn. It's about being the quickest around here. [MUSIC] [SOUND] [BLANK_AUDIO] I love it and I hate it a little bit, because, [BLANK_AUDIO] One, I can't have one. Two, I can't just lap this forever cuz that's what I really want to do. I want to experience that grip. I want to see all the car working with me around each and every corner, struggling to get round it As quickly as possible, as tidily as possible. So then, is it better than the GT3? What about the Turbo S, I mentioned earlier. On the road, maybe not. Here, I 'd like to see them try to come close to making you feel half as good. The Porsche 911 has many fans, myself included. And you can see why they celebrate cars like the GT3RS so much. It has power, performance, speed, competency and purity while others don't. They also each A joy to experience. This isn't only the best 911 you can buy, it's one of the best cars, too. [SOUND]
