iPhone update 1.1.3
>> Hi, I'm Ken Sherman, senior editor here at cnet.com. I'm here with Apple's iPhone. And I want to tell you and show you the updates that were announced at Apple's Macro 2008 for the iPhone. Two things were announced. One of the most interesting things, even though it's one of the most basics, at least I think, is the ability to send a text or S-message to multiple people at once. It's real easy to do that. We'll go into text messaging. And then you can just click on your names and you can select multiple people at once. The next thing is purely cosmetic, but it allows you to customize the home screen. What you do is you just hold your finger down on one of the icons. You'll notice the icons all start wiggling. You can then move them around as you please. While this may seem very cosmetic and just sort of fun, it actually serves up a good purpose because actually you can drag icons over and you can go to a second screen. The next thing concerns the maps. Now, we all know that the iPhone does not have a GPS chip in it. But the update that Apple announced yesterday does allow you to find your position using another method. So what we'll do is we'll open the map service. You'll notice there are new icons down here on the bottom. Press the cross hairs. That will start working. It should give you a circle on the screen with your approximate location. So at this point, actually you can see that they actually zoomed in a little far out, but we have seen it where it actually zooms in a little more. You can also press this I button down here. And that will allow you to drop a pin on the map. You can actually pick up the pin, you can move it around, and then you can use the different pins to find and locate. You can name them. You can say this is a great store I like. Or you can use them to determine directions as well. Or when you're watching movies, you can now scroll through the movie by chapter. Previously, when you wanted to go through movies, you had to move that bar up there at the top, in which it just wasn't entirely accurate. The last thing new to the iPhone is the web clips. So what I'll do is I'll open the safari browser. We can press the button using for bookmarks as we always did. You can add a home screen. You can name it whatever you'd like. So we'll just call it the iPhone. And you can press add. And then you'll see it pops up there. So it actually is a miniature version of the web page. And the great thing about that is if you want to go back, just open that and it opens automatically. So some pretty interesting features. Nothing totally groundbreaking, definitely, where we're still looking forward to that second generation iPhone, though, with the 3G. I'm Ken Sherman here with iPhone updates from Apple 2008.
