Interview: Nerdist's Dan Casey recaps his favorite SXSW 2016 movies and TV shows on Tomorrow Daily
[MUSIC]
Welcome back to the show, everybody.
Our guest today, you may have seen on a little thing called the internet.
Yeah.
He hosts a show called The Dan Cave, he is a senior editor at Nerdist.com,
Good friend of the show, Dan Casey.
Hi, everyone.
Welcome back friend.
Thanks for having me.
It's cool to be back.
We haven't seen you since CES.
I know.
I was sad when there wasn't an adorable puppy that I could play with in the green room this time.
I apologize for that.
I'm just saying-
It's in his rider.
I was gonna say it.
It's in your rider.
It's in your guest rider.
Happy St.
Patrick's Day.
Thank you.
I like the Green Lantern.
Yeah, I gotta support the core.
Also Irish, if you didn't know that.
It's a little known secret.
Yes.
The entire core Irish.
They're just fighting an intergalactic potato famine.
That's very true.
Boy.
You have just returned from South West, South West.
I have indeed.
I ate my body weight in brisket and lived to tell the tale.
Hey, that's the way we do South West, South West.
I was going to ask, the important question today would be exactly how many pounds of barbecue did you eat?
Man, I'm not much of a math
Guy but I would say, the amount was medically inadvisable.
[LAUGH]
I ate quite a bit of barbecue while I was down there because who knows when I'll be back.
That's true.
The first time I went to South by Southwest, I decided I was gonna have ribs for every meal.
[LAUGH]
Which is why I've never even get back to South by Southwest cuz everyone is dying anyway.
It was delicious by the way.
Yeah but all that protein.
What a way to go.
All bulk muscle.
Delicious way to go.
But you are not there just to see and eat delicious foods, you saw and did other things.
I did a bunch of stuff, so Nerdist, Geek and Sundry, and Amy Poehler's Smart Girls of the Party, we took over this bar on Raining Street called Banger's Sausage House and Beer Garden,
Highly recommended.
It's a great place.
We turned into a sort of a pop-up saloon.
So all weekend long we had panels, performances, all sorts of fun stuff and then that was a big place where I did a lot of that [UNKNOWN] barbecue eating.
Nice.
Nice.
And on a scale of one to ten, how nice was your floozie costume?
Cuz it was a salute.
Man, I'd give it a strong seven.
I don't want to oversell myself.
But it was hootnanny appropriate.
Hootnanny appropriate.
All right, that's what I was hoping to hear.
That's Texas style, hootnanny appropriate attire.
Exactly, y'all come back now.
Were there any barfights?
Ooh, I hope not.
Unless something went down After the talent.
Chobot.
Yeah.
Got real angry about something.
Chobot beat up Jake Gyllenhaal.
[LAUGH]
It was bad.
She gets upset about things.
[LAUGH]
She's like cellar door, that's the most beautiful phrase?
No!
[LAUGH]
I will fight you.
So did you get to see any of the films that were showing or anything [CROSSTALK]
I did.
I did get to see a couple cool films and some cool TV series that are making their premiere.
Awesome.
TV was really big this year at South by.
Exactly.
TV was huge this year at South by and I got to see And interviewed the cast of two of the ones I'm most excited for which is Preacher coming to AMC.
[CROSSTALK]
I'm scared of, I'm scared
It's good.
[CROSSTALK]
I heard it was good.
It is not 100% the comic-
Now you're scaring me again.
But The Walking Dead is not a 100% the comic- [CROSSTALK]
I don't like that show
It feel, it's so much better than The Walking Dead.
Yeah.
And I love The Walking Dead, like, The Walking Dead took six years to get good, but The Preacher, right off the bat, filled me with confidence, it's funny, it's gross, it's violent.
Alright.
It's dark.
And I think that anyone who's worried, their fears will be assuaged once that actually debuts on May 22nd.
I'm very excited to see it.
That comic is beloved to me.
Okay.
And is one of those ones where I was like, please just don't mess it up.
Just don't ever touch it.
So you're making me feel good.
You can tell that Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg really care about the source material.
Yeah.
And some of the action in there.
I feel like a lot of comic book TV shows, it's kind of like stutter, stop, action.
some of the scenes in that, super-fluid, very funny.
I can't wait to see more.
So you saw the first episode?
I saw the pilot so I could interview the cast about it.
Awesome.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Man, I am very excited.
And you said May 22 is when it debuts?
Yeah.
Unfortunately there is no mullet.
For Jesse Custer, some thing's had to be modernized a little bit.
[LAUGH] Awesome.
If you liked Preacher, what was the other show?
Cuz you said there were two.
Outcast.
Speaking of The Walking Dead, Robert Kirkman, another comic that he has at Skybound and Image Comics called Outcast, him and Paul Azaceta Really fantastic story about this guy, Kyle Barnes, who is plagued by demonic possession his whole life.
And then he starts experiencing this on a larger scale in his hometown.
So he has to team up with this troubled reverend.
And together they have to put a stop to it before it's too late.
Two troubled reverend shows?
Yes, exactly, that's the hot new trend.
That's the new vampires.
That's the new Sparkly vampires, troubled reverence.
Yeah, and this is, but it's more about like the main guy, Kyle, played by Patrick Fugit from Almost Famous.
And it's directed by Adam Wingard, who did You're Next and The Guests.
So it's got a strong horror route to it.
And it's really creepy, really gross, and one of my favorite comics right now, so I think people are really gonna dig it.
It's on Cinemax.
It debuts June 3rd.
So, you have plenty of time to add that to your cable package.
Getting in the, getting in the game of big shows.
Get your cord cutter pegs.
Did you see the [UNKNOWN] that they did?
Yeah, man, it was fantastic.
Yeah.
They are stepping up their game, big time.
Yeah, that's another show that grosses me out.
It's not like they have Weeds, they had, I mean, they have really good shows, it's just, I think a lot of shows-
[CROSSTALK] Showtime, wasn't Weeds Showtime?
Showtime, I'm sorry.
But Cinemax, with the Nick and stuff, I think that they are kind of a dark horse in the sense of, we don't really, We don't really hear about all the great shows that are happening there, but there are really good shows that go on over there.
Absolutely.
Yeah, it's like HBO's weird cousin.
[LAUGH]
Yeah.
Yeah.
It's like that weird cousin that shows up at the family reunion and by the end of the night you're best friends again.
But at the beginning you're like I don't know if I like that guy.
Yeah.
What are they doing?
They did a weird Amish thing with When I was younger-
Please stop putting goldfish in your peanut butter sandwich, you're creeping me out.
[LAUGH]
When I was younger they used to still be the weird cousin.
But they were the weird cousin that made everyone uncomfortable because they showed too much.
Yeah.
[LAUGH]
Yeah.
And I'm glad they've kind of moved beyond the Skin-A-Max label.
This is a family barbecue.
Yes, whose cousin is that?
This is a hootenanny.
Not a hooternanny.
When we said floozy, we didn't mean floozy.
[LAUGH]
All right.
Boy.
Okay.
TV, those two were your favorites.
Movies, always have been a huge part of Syfy, since they're out of the film festival.
I've heard a lot of good things about a lot of movies coming out of South By like Midnight Special.
What did you see that was your favorite?
And also what were the other movies that you saw you just thought were so great and that people should definitely check out when they go wide release?
I think one of the best things come out of the festival was a movie called Don't Think Twice.
And it's Mike [UNKNOWN].
Keegan Micheal Key, a bunch of super talented people.
It's about an improv comedy troop in New York City and one of them lands a gig on like a weekend update style thing on their version on SNL.
And it's about how that, one person's success.
Sort of tears that group apart because it's like what happens when someone else achieves your dream.
Right.
Right, yeah.
And it's really good.
Mike Birbiglia, ever since he started making more narrative driven pictures like Sleepwalk with Me, really been crushing it.
And that one, I think, is gonna surprise a lot of people, especially-.
Is that a little too close to home for us?
Well I mean.
Probably.
[CROSSTALK]
That movie that we're writing about Chris Hardwick.
[LAUGH]
[LAUGH]
We gotta just take that off the table now I guess.
[LAUGH]
[LAUGH] I know, God.
Well, even like not to get super weird on everybody.
Chris Hardwick yesterday was complaining about 11-ish.
I don't know if you've seen it.
What is that?
Yeah, what is this?
Yeah.
That's pretty amazing.
Yeah, for people who don't know, it's
It's like basically over in England, I think, for ITV, they're making essentially just a ripoff of @midnight called @elevenish.
They just took the @Midnight font and made it bolder.
Bolder, yeah.
[CROSSTALK]
Yeah, exactly, yeah.
Ever watch that show?
Comes on like 11:59 or so.
[LAUGH]
11:58 and 30 seconds.
Go and let it finish.
Pretty funny.
I would say it's a bold move.
[LAUGH]
Literally.
Maybe cuz they made it international waters they can get away with it.
I guess so, yeah.
Maybe some sea captain.
It's pirating.
They're actual pirates.
Actual seafaring international waters pirates.
[LAUGH]
I like it.
Okay, so that one of your favorite movies, what else was good there, because interactive was there too, did you get to check out any interactive stuff?
I did not really get to check out a lot of interactive stuff, one of the coolest things that I saw that was there for interactive was Star Wars and Disney, they built a life size [UNKNOWN] fighter
What?
Down the street from us.
And like you're just walking down the street like okay.
Can you just hide it?
Food truck's unfortunately no not without your pilot's license.
Well I got to get that.
I got to get on that.
The only John Boyeda is allowed on that on Earth.
Pretty much he wasn't a pilot he just.
Yeah.
[CROSSTALK]
Poe Cameron may be like honorary pilot?
Yeah if Poe decides to like, swap sides in the new movie.
Yeah.
Then maybe we'll think about,
He might get one yeah, he might get one for sure.
Yeah, they have one of those, the helmets with the big.
You know, things here.
You can't have the regular Ailment.
They had the black helmet.
Yeah, it was like the-
[CROSS-TALK] Air-mask in there, you gotta have all the-
Yeah.
It's just like in Top Gun.
Exactly.
Come on, you gotta, rip off thing, can't breath, like it's, no, you gotta have that.
Yeah.
It's exciting and cinematic.
Then I want to see that,
Shirtless Stormtrooper volleyball stand.
A hundred times 50%.
[LAUGH] High five.
Yeah.
How come nobody's made that web video yet?
There's that, I think we need to write that parody.
Exactly.
Right after we're done with this interview.
Yeah.
ITV?
Hands off.
[LAUGH]
Yeah.
Don't touch it.
How dare you.
Don't you,
Amazing
Would terrible pop gonna knock up.
So films knock up that.
Yeah.
[LAUGH] Air walk.
Not sure.
Above wasn't.
Yeah.
[LAUGH] [LAUGH] [INAUDIBLE] [CROSSTALK] I like it.
Okay.
So we have covered South by Southwest.
I feel like we have a good idea of the some of the best things out of the show.
I'm very excited about those TV shows.
I am too.
After hearing, I was worried about Preacher as well.
And after hearing from a couple of people who saw that pilot, they were just like, it's good.
You think you can trust [UNKNOWN], you can trust, you can trust them.
Yeah.
Evan and Seth have it locked down.
Like, they get it, they understand it, they love it, it's made, it's a labor of love.
Yeah.
Trust them.
And you would never know that Dominic Cooper and Ruth Negga, who play Jessie Custer and Tulip, respectively,
Are British.
You would never know, yeah.
Joseph Gilgun, you know he's Irish because he's supposed to be Irish.
He's supposed to be, yeah.
He's supposed to be really Irish.
He's not faking it.
They got a real Irishman.
I just want to see if they're really gonna do Arseface at some point.
They do.
Really?
Without spoiling anything, you'll be happy.
[LAUGH]
We already are.
It's all happening, it's all happening.
It is, yeah.
Your life is gonna changed [CROSSTALK]
[LAUGH]
So, Alfred [UNKNOWN] what are you guys doing, what are doing on Dan Cavern, Alan?
What's the So, what's the thing?
I had fun with it for South by Southwest.
It's a weird city full of weird movies.
Keep off the weird.
That's the thing.
Exactly.
That is their mandate.
So, I celebrated that a little bit with some of the most WTF worthy movies ever made.
That was a lot of fun to research that episode.
I try to skirt between like awesomely bad movies and like deeply strange movies.
Horrible.
Yeah.
So, you have like Samurai Cop which is just full of like terrible wigs, bad acting, like bizarre choices.
Then you have like Holy Motors which is like Very well shot, very thoughtful but also like, incredibly off-putting and weird.
Weird
Yeah.
Yeah, so if anybody had to pick one summer blockbuster to see this year what would you
Having seen none of them yourself.
Having seen none of them.
Well you, but you have a good I think you have a good sense of what's going to be good and what's not going to
Yeah.
be so good.
And this is a really In tenth year for blockbuster film.
Yeah, little bit
And expensive to go to the movie.
And before you answer if you don't save some the warrior kick off the show.
[LAUGH]
Bad say whatever you want.
Could you know that.
What
I apologize to all those who've worn the logo on my shirt before but I have to agree with Jeff.
Captain America: Civil War, I was lucky enough to visit the set last year in Atlanta Georgia at Pinewood.
And everything I saw there has filled me with so much confidence in everything I've seen since.
All the footage.
All the trailers.
Pete Speiderman, the brand new costume.
Speiderman is in the movie!
Yeah!
With his little scrawny teenage voice, like hey everyone!
Haha!
[LAUGH]
I have such excitement.
They did this thing that I've been trying to beg them to do in a Spiderman movie, and that is animate the eyes, and they Deadpooled it.
Functional, they're functional, they look like they're shutters, like camera shutters.
Yeah.
That open and let in more light and close.
And also give him an expression, which is nice.
Exactly, especially after Deadpool.
It doesn't have to make logical sense.
It's just one of those weird little comic book trappings that adds a lot.
Exactly, and then you're not contriving to rip his mask off every two minutes.
Yeah, totally.
[LAUGH]
Yeah, so
I think we're gonna wrap it up.
Are we gonna wrap it up?
I thank you so much for coming by.
Thank you for having me.
You bet.
It was a pleasure.
I think we may just lock you in a closet and keep you here.
Well, just like where I live at home.
I'm a Harry Potter LARPer so-
[LAUGH]
Like email [CROSSTALK]
Perfect.
[CROSSTALK]
Yeah.
All right.
Perfect.
No.
By all means.
I was going to say, where can people keep up with your goings on.
You can find everything I write on nerdist.com.
You can find me on the Internet @osteoferocious like the crippling bone disease but meaner.
Sorry, but someone is squatting on @dancasey.
I would have that otherwise.
There Twitter, Instagram, SnapChat, unfortunately I'm clams, clams, clams, because I did not think it was a viable platform, but here I am.
You can also find my books on Amazon.com, just search for my name.
Fantastic.
Thank you so much for coming in.
And like I said, it's always a delight.
It is indeed.
And we love talking to you about movies and pop culture and stuff.
So, that is Mr. Dan Casey everybody.
Make sure you check his stuff out in the internet, if you're not already which, let's all be real here, you probably are.
And there's more to our daily coming right up.
So stick around.
Don't touch that dial.
