First Look: iLuv Professional Case with Bluetooth Keyboard

2:45 /

Does a keyboard case work on an iPad? What if it was detachable? We look at iLuv's all-leather keyboard case solution.

Hi, I'm Scott Stein, senior editor at CNET.com and what you're looking at here is the iLuv Professional Case with Bluetooth Keyboard. It's a long name for a product that does exactly what it looks like it does. It provides a keyboard for the iPad for people who wanna write on the go. We've seen a lot of solutions like this over the past few months to a year. What they're great for, obviously, is providing a solution to-- or an alternative to typing on that screen which can get a little annoying and a little glummy for people who wanna write all the time on their iPad. iLuv's Bluetooth keyboard case solution is made all of leather and it's thick, maybe a little too thick for our taste. When it closes in book form, it's about as thick as a laptop, if that, but what's different about this case is the fact that the keyboard is actually detachable from the case, with Velcro, and can stand on its own. It's a Bluetooth keyboard so you could use it, remove it from here, you could use it with another case. You could even use this as a standalone Bluetooth keyboard, whatever you like, even a computer. That has some nice functionality because when you close this case and it's a lot thinner, although some people may not really like this type of leather folio case for their iPad. There's a questionable value if it's removed from the keyboard. This Bluetooth keyboard has its own rechargeable battery. You turn on the side here and sync it with the device. You can also recharge it with an included micro USB cable. Of course, the first thing you're gonna wanna look at for a keyboard case like this is how does the keyboard work? Well, this is a flat, plastic keyboard, kind of like what you see on some Gateway and Acer laptops. At least it's not rubbery like some other keyboards that we've seen on the iPad. It has a nice click response but it's really flat and that may turn off some people. It does have a leather palm rest below it which is kinda comfortable, but because it's so flush with the rest of the keyboard, it's not quite the same experience that you're gonna get with-- with a laptop that may have a little more of a recessed-type feel in the keyboard itself. It's nice that it's removable, although we don't know how much we'd really use that, and when attached here, at least it does feel nice and comfy and the stand on the back here is sort of an easel-type stand that pops out. It's a little difficult to pop back in but once you fiddle with it and get it there, it pops back in and snaps on to the back of the case. The price is high at about $129. That's another consideration you might wanna make over buying a less expensive keyboard that could cost about $70 or $60 and then you don't have to buy into getting the whole case, too, plus, once you slide this into the leather case, you gotta give up the back cover, you gotta give up the Smart Cover and you might like using those. You're gonna have to buy into using this whole case solution here. I'm Scott Stein and that's a quick look at the iLuv iPad Professional Keyboard Case with Bluetooth.
