HTC goes camera crazy with 'Re' and a selfie phone

Tech Industry
Selfie lovers, rejoice. There is now a smart phone with a powerful front facing camera. I'm Bridget Carrie, and this is your cnet update. [MUSIC] HTC is going camera crazy, not only did it just announce a new smartphone with 13 megapixel front camera as the ultimate selfie smartphone. But it also came out with a new handheld camera that looks kind of like an asthma inhaler. It's called the Re and it costs $200. This periscope shaped, handheld camera is for recording life without being a slave to your smart phone screen. What's unique is that there's no power button. It has a capacitive touch sensor. So it turns on as soon as you pick it up, no launching apps, no waiting for it to power on, just instant photos and video. Now if you really wanna view to see what you're shooting, you can wirelessly connect it to your smartphone to see a preview. There's also a standard tripod mount on the bottom. Your thumb rests on the bend where there's a shutter button. One press shoots a 16-megapixel photo, but hold it for a few seconds and it records HD video. There's also another button under the lens that switches to recording slow-motion video. And as for that selfie smartphone, it's called the HTC Desire Eye. It's a 5.2 inch screen Android phone and that front 13 megapixel camera also has a dual LED flash. It's the first phone to have such a serious camera in the front and it has the same camera on the back. It's also waterproof so you can take underwater photos. It'll go on sale later this month. It's officially time for new iPads. Apple sent out invitations to press. That's having an event on October 16th, at which we will likely see new iPads and Mac computers. On the invite was the tease, it's been way too long. Because perhaps it's been way too long since you've bought a new iPad. Most people don't upgrade every year, so perhaps Apple will show off new colors and fingerprint scanners. To entice you to upgrade for the holidays. At the event there's a chance you could also learn about the launch date for Apple Pay. All we know is that it's sometime this month. And Apple just released a beta version of iOS 8.1 to developers and it reveals what Apple Pay setup screens will look like. These shots were published on MacRumors. The exclamation and prompt to enter your card numbers is tucked into Apple's passbook app, and this data software hints that iPads may also have the power of Apple pay. That's your tech news update, we also have more for you at cnet.com. Stay updated by subscribing to our podcast and be sure to follow along on Twitter. From our studios in New York, I'm Bridget Carey. [MUSIC]
