We cheer on New Horizons and its Pluto flyby (Tomorrow Daily 208)

Culture
On today's show a prosthetic arm for kids, that you can add real life Lego's too. Oh, and we flew really close to Pluto. No big deal. And Amazon Prime day is tomorrow and it's better than Christmas. Get out your wallet. Come over daily. [MUSIC] Greetings citizens of the internet, welcome to Tomorrow Daily, the best geek talk show in the known universe. I'm Ashley Esqueda that's Kel Anonymous, and you're here with us, so welcome. Welcome to you, my friends. Hello. Hello. We said get out your wallets because we'd like you to give your money to us. To keep it safe before Amazon Prime Day. Obviously, we're like a safety bank, like a piggy bank, just please don't break us open. Listen to the headlines. Alright. You alright today? Yeah, I think so. I just felt like maybe I made it awkward. Let's talk about Pluto. Not the beloved Disney character, but the ex-planet, now dwarf planet. Yeah, this is big news. Huge news! This is amazing. So New Horizons is a mission that has been going on since 2006. And it has been almost ten years, and it finally completed it's closest approach to Pluto. And we got the first high res images of the dwarf planet that we have ever, ever seen. It took over three billion miles. It passed Pluto this morning at about 4, well about 4:50 in the morning Pacific Time, and passed it going 30,000 miles per hour. So it was a flying past. Scientists are really, really excited, because this means we are already seeing images from Pluto, from New Horizons. And we've already learned so much about the planet. We know how big it is now. We didn't really know, before. Before we had some really, kind of iffy images from the Hubble Telescope that were really blurry. So, in fact, I saw the .gif on the internet today and thought it was so, so cool. I think we have a screen cap of it, so check this out. This is what we had before as an image of Pluto. That was the only thing we knew about Pluto, and this is what we have, now. Now. How? What a difference that makes! That's an actual picture of Pluto, 3 billion miles away. Wow, I can't believe that's all we had. That's all we had before. That's all we knew about Pluto. Yeah. It's like if I take out my contacts, is what I see. Yeah, exactly. And then I put them in and I see this. And then you see this, exactly, it's like putting on a fresh pair of glasses. And so, this is pretty incredible. So if that gift doesnt sell for you as to how important this is to scientists, astrophysicists, anybody who studies the solar system and outer space in general, I don't know what would. So this is a pretty incredible image. So we actually haven't seen the closest photo. It's gonna take about fifteen hours for that to transmit to earth So, we're going to see that a little bit later tonight. So if you're watching the show, usually we post at about 4 or 5 o'clock. So, it should be another few hours before we see the closest approach image that New Horizons snapped of Pluto. But high-five NASA like. Yeah. Cool. Pretty intense. Another fun fact that I read online, which I think you'll really enjoy, is that the budget for this entire mission Costs about the same as the creating and marketing budget off the minions movie [LAUGH] [LAUGH] That's how everybody translates it Yeah, of course, you got to Movie. That's crazy and probably inflation too right. I mean this is just really amazing. So what has NASA said they're gonna do with this information besides just be like now we have a better understanding of Pluto. So they didnt really know any of the geographical features on Pluto. We didn't really know anything about what the surface looks like, what the atmosphere is like. That's another thing they can study. So just to sort of know what is going on up there A lot of people are saying oh, maybe Pluto will be a planet again, but so far it doesn't look like that. Although, it is bigger than we thought it was. Pluto's bigger than we thought it was, which was one of the reasons, amongst many, that it was downgraded. They thought it was much smaller than it actually was. But it's still smaller than our own moon. So it's not quite planet-y enough to maybe be upgraded. So where's the New Horizons thing go now? Just flies off into the? Into the beyond, yes. It's just gonna keep on hurtling. They're gonna keep getting images. It's in the Kuiper Belt, so it's out. Still kind of a bummer. I always feel bad for those little guys. I don't. What if some Super advanced alien race picks it up and turns it into a humanoid robot or something. I dunno. There's always a chance. What if it flies into a wormhole? I like your hopefulness, but I'm thinking Wall-E. Just, like, gone. Just gone forever. So, let me ask you this then. This will be our Hashtag of the Day. #TDFlyby If New Horizons, if it could go anywhere in the universe, it's still hurtling out there. It's still going at 30,000 miles an hour. If it could take a picture of anything in the universe for you in high-def, like what we saw in that GIF, what would you want it to take a picture of? Like a candy planet. Like a planet, just like it's got candy canes. A Snickers planet? And it's got chocolate water and it's just like it's a candy-, that would be a great discovery. We're tired of finding ones where there's no air, there's no water, and there's no life. It's just all candy. All candy. I like. That's what I want to put. And then what would we do Like, who would be excited? Today, this is it. This is where we're gonna live now, candy planet. Let's go. All of you Earthians get on here. Khail would be on that ship in a heart beat. I'm not actually a big fan of candy or sweets. No. You know that. You just want, maybe just Do a line full of tourism flyby. Take a couple pictures, come back. I like the visual aesthetic of candy. Okay. And I think it's a delightful thing. The game? Candy Land the game? The Candy Land game is overrated. Like the best parts are the earlier parts. A serious accusation. It gets super dangerous in the back part. It does. Why would you keep going? You're going to the castle? What is even there? There's candy all the way, you don't need to go to the castle. So that's dumb, and Chutes and Ladders is dumb too. [LAUGH] Hi Ho Cherry-O, now we're talking. What do you want- Fair enough. To do a flyby of? So, I am going to pick something real, but something that's also pretty amazing, in that it's a whole planet made of diamond. Like there's that planet out there. I think it might be in the Kepler system. That is a planet made of diamonds. So I'd like to see what that looks like in high def because it seems like it would be pretty amazing to do from space. Like, would it be kind of like a big giant prism, kind of sparkly-ish. You're picturing a giant diamond. No, I got like around where it's like there's sort of a reflective surface but not anything like, you know like a resteinen almost. I just think it'd be really cool to see what that looks like because I have no idea in my mind about what that could even look Look like. That seems crazy to me that there's an entire planet out there that's made of diamonds. Yeah. That is pretty cool. Pretty rad. Maybe some of those neat planets that they say might be in the Goldilocks zone that might be habitable. I'd like to see some HD of that. Oh yeah. Wouldn't it be amazing if there were just dinosaurs just roaming on there? Just rando dinosaurs. And everyone's just like, oh my you guys, this is crazy. That's the planet Khail would head to. Yeah but I wouldn't survive very long. Cuz I would try to pet a dinosaur the second I saw it, anyway so there you go TD flyby. Yeah TD flyby. Moving on to something that I'm very excited about so is Ashley and so is Producer Logan? Yup. Okay so that is Prime Day, it is the 20th anniversary of website Amazon.com where of course most of us have. What? I can't believe it, 20 years. 20 years of the website, Amazon.com, where you can go on there and basically buy anything, great stuff. But they decided they're going to destroy Black Friday, which is a huge deal in the states. It's called Prime Day, and it's going on for 24 hours. So if you have a Prime account on there, you'll be able to get all kinds of crazy deals. We have some Here's some, but not by any long shot, all. [CROSSTALK] Got a 40-inch LED TV for $115, which is great. Oh, cheap. A 32-inch smart TV for under $200, 50% off Nikon cameras, Roombas for under $300. And Bose headphones at quote, unquote, their lowest price ever on Amazon. Well, CNET has a big listing, I'm sure there's gonna be more. And I guess you can just check CNet tomorrow for more updates, but there you go. Tomorrow. I heard there were going to be some good video game deals, as well. I was looking on GameSpot today, and they had some stuff up, they were assuming would be happening at some point. A lot of sites are going to have what deals are when, if they can get them in advance. You can always check CNet, or You know, anywhere if you're looking to time something, because obviously a lot of these deals are probably, if they're really good like they say they're gonna be which who knows, they'll go out, they'll sell out pretty quick. Well they kept saying better than black friday which is a very bold statement. That is very bold. That is very bold. For anybody who doesn't have a Prime membership you can cheat the system a little bit, I'm gonna tell you how. Sign up for a free 30 day prime membership tonight and just have your credit card ready. Have all your info ready so that you can buy stuff, but you can get a free 30 day Prime membership so you can take part in this. The sale and then you can leave if you want. There you go. And then you get your free two day shipping and everything. You heard it here first folks. Ashley's trying to cheat Amazon. Yep. Make sure the tweet them so they know to come after her. I see We'll talk about that little, this is a work around, is all. All right, I wanna tell you about- I don't wanna be involved in this at all. You don't wanna be associated with me. You're gonna wanna be associated with me right now, though, because I wanna tell you about this story. I know you like Lego. I love that gal. And we both love when people can make the lives of kids who have lost limbs better. Yeah. Those are always the best. This is a marriage of both those things. So this guy who's a Columbian designer named Carlos Torres, he decided one day he wanted to help kids. With missing limbs express their creativity through their prosthetics, and so he came up with this program called the IKO Creative Prosthetic System, which is this artificial limb that kids can swap pieces on. They can swap out whatever they want. They can build whatever they want with Legos. It's amazing. And so So he thinks that adding a play element to kids' prosthetics can really help them in rehab, like in the rehabilitating and learning how to use their prosthetic limb. And also get them a little bit more excited. Excited about what's obviously a very life-changing event. Like if you, either were born without a limb and get a new one, or if you lose a limb and have to learn how to use a prosthetic that's still life-changing. Anyway you slice it, this is a big deal. This is how it works, there's this sort of main unit, and then it has a sort of snap-on, that you twist on, at the top you can put on these like attachments and everything. So they have like I said, robot gripping hand But then they also have Lego stuff, which is so cool. So, Lego got involved in this. He actually, this guy traveled to Denmark to Lego's very, top secret research and development. Labs and was able to pick their brains and ask them, ok, how can I make this work, what do you think, let's work with the designer. So he worked with Lego designers and researchers To kind of come up with this concept. So we have a video of him and this kid trying on an actual arm and like having all these different things. And the prototype has a battery, a charging port, a processor, myoelectric sensors, and then a whole bunch of Lego compatible spots to build on. And so he says he wants to make a commercial product. And he hopes that it might be available late next year, or early in 2017. That's fantastic, yeah. Just pretty amazing. Yeah, and look. And the kid trying it out is like just blown away. Well, not only are they learning to use a prosthetic, but they're using creativity. And the fact that Lego's actually involved means it'll be more than just an idea, that's fantastic. Yeah, yeah, and this is great So keep an eye out for that cuz I just think this is one of the most fantastic things I've ever seen in terms of prosthetics and especially kids. I mean, we saw the one guy who does the hero one. The Iron Man. The Iron Man, yeah, which is really neat. And then now these are also fun in that way where they can also play as well as for use the for utility, which is what they would need them for, but as kids it's Why not give them the chance to be, have a little fun? You know? You know, every time we have one of these stories I'm like, This guy would be like a huge hit at a bar."Because [INAUDIBLE] girls like, What do you do for a living? You're like- I build- Oh, I help kids get rehabilitated, but I also created this Lego thing so it builds their imagination That they help use the prosthetics by just like, here's my number, here's my number. Marry me right now. I love you. You're such a human saint. You're a hero. Yeah. It's just like, oh my God, that guy. How do you compete with that? Yeah. I go in and- Everyone at the bar hates that guy. I host like a science show. [LAUGH] And they're just like- I talk about that guy, that's- Yeah. I talk about him. Yeah, I talk about him on my show. I'm sorry. Alright guys, we're going to take a quick break. We'll be right back. It's Tuesday we have to talk about new releases, some great movies coming out this week. And then of course we have your user feedback and our phonetographer still a click a away. It's Tomorrow Daily. [MUSIC] Welcome back to the show. Right before the break we saw a really cool recut of the Ant-Man trailer to make it look like a 1950s B movie, one of my- That was super cool. One of my favorite things on the Internet last week. I'm dying to show it because it's time for new releases. [MUSIC] Scale of 1-10, how excited are you for Ant-Man? Seven. Which is exactly the score it's getting on rottentomatoes. 75%. Ant-Man's coming out this week. Ant-Man, I love Paul Rudd. I'm pretty sure he's an immortal vampire. Yeah, I love Paul Rudd, too. But, it doesn't look like he doesn't have a lot of elbow room to be Paul Rudd. No, it seems like he's maybe a little more confined to the- Marvel cinematic universe. Story Marvel cinematic universe here. It sounds like fun. Yeah. I will say that, it looks fun. And I do think that if you go and see this you' ll have a good time, but they were saying that this could be, this could be the very first marvel movie to come in second at the box office>>wow>>cause they've never had a not number one in opening weekend and It might, might come in second. If Minions keeps holding on strong this weekend, might come in second. Yeah, wow. Which would be crazy. That would stink. Poor Paul Rudd. But it still looks pretty good. I mean, I'm excited to see it. I love these sort of little like gag Ideas, like all these little train sets look so intense up close with Ant-Man, but then it's like just a train set falling over in real life. Yeah. I mean the original Ant-Man, Hank Pym, is a really interesting character, but this isn't Hank Pym. I think you told me at one point, like. Kill educates me about comic books, [CROSSTALK] that he started the avengers, that he was the one who sort of started. Yeah, more or less. I mean, there's like different things, but yeah. But he's one of the ones who started the Avengers. Very important. Yeah, he was in the Avengers for sure, yeah. Well, you know, they gotta have faith too, and He's probably gonna, there's apparently two cool after credit scenes that are apparently the best in all of the cinematic universe. Oh, more scenes. So, that's pretty cool, already I'm like curious to what it's gonna be. All right. Also, Ant-Man's probably gonna be joining the Avengers, so. Of course There you go. I wanna see this next one though. I'm gonna see two movies this week in the theater. And it's definitely Ant-Man and it's definitely this one. Trainwreck, which is coming out this weekend. It's an Amy Schumer movie. I think it's her first major feature film. She stars in it. She wrote it. So funny. Amy Schumer is hilarious to me. She is, in this movie, somebody who cannot get her life together. She's a total mess, hence the train wreck title. And her and Bill Hader, it's kind of a rom-com, but I would say like a very subversive rom-com. And apparently it's very good. All three of these movies are tracking pretty well. On Rotten Tomatoes. And this one I think was like 91% as of right now. I think I saw this morning it was over 90%. So, looks pretty good, people are giving it good reviews, getting good notices. So I think I'm into it, I think I want to see this for sure, cuz I love Amy Schumer. She's one of my favorite comedians happening right now. She's so hot right now, yeah. [LAUGH] And then lastly, A movie that hasn't really gotten a whole lot of, I guess, promotion? Mr. Holmes has a a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes right now. It's everybody's favorite Everything ever. [INAUDIBLE] butter field? Maybe, I don't know. What are you talking about? No, it's Ian McKellen. Oh, Ian McKellen, yeah. Everybody fair. Gandolf, all the great things. Magneto, come on. Everybody's favorite. He plays Sherlock Holmes. And it's like there's a mystery and it's supposed to be really, really good, but I literally have seen one advertisement for this in the last six months. I just don't care about Sherlock Holmes anymore! You're just over it? Oh my God, there's been a million movies and I like the TV series. I love the TV series. People went bananas. But we don't need a million of these things going at the same time. I like this kind of Sherlock Holmes film. There's no Watson. I think he talks about like how there's no Watson anymore and like he went away or something like that. I don't know it seems interesting if you're into that sort of movie or looking for alternative programming. Yeah. Could be an option for you. But it's tracking very well, I don't know, so tracking very well in terms of reviews. Okay so how do the audience. How do the audiences split on this? Because these are all for three different audiences essentially. Very much. And then you have Minions. So Minions still in the game. Yeah, so I think Minions kids, Ant-Man like the nerdy, pop-culture people. Nerd, pop-culture fans, yeah. Then Trainwreck, any of the people that aren't into the nerdy pop culture. Comedy fans, romcom. To be realistic, women. Women, yeah, romcom fans. Okay. And then homes, nobody. Old people. Nope, nobody. Old people. No, you know who's gonna see that movie? Sir Patrick Stewart because they're best friends. That's right, yeah. He's gonna see it opening night. It's just gonna be good job. Wait that was terrible. Alright, anyway we're moving on to our very last piece of, I don't know, whatever the next thing is. It's user feedback. [MUSIC] I say it's like our very last bit of the show. I just really want it out of None of that. Fair enough. [INAUDIBLE] that conversation. All right. Yesterday we asked you guys to use #TDLux, tell us what you'd want your car to generate for you. You guys came up with some really good ones. Way better than ours. Mine was compliments and yours was what? Mine was, would come up with. Oh yeah, you'd get like travel miles. Yeah, That was great, that was a great idea, yeah. Okay. Travel miles, travel reward miles. Oliver wrote in and said comic con trailers or ice. Ice cream. I like ice cream. Like ice cream just generate- I like how those things are kind of the same thing to you. Going to Baskin Robbins and get a Comic-Con shirt. Dustman wrote in, said I would have my car clean up pollution every where I go to make positive impact on the environment. I like that, a pollution eater. Because his name is Dust Man. Sure, why not? No, his name was Dust Man. I know, it's a little ironic. A little bit of irony. Gail wrote in and said, make the car generate puppy and kitten videos that'll give you that grew feeling? I don't know. I want to say that new feeling at the start of your work day. I want to put great feeling. Great feeling? Sure. I say grew. Rick wrote in and said the car would have a removable battery. I would use the saved energy as a battery for my home electronics like TV, PC, Xbox. That's smart. Okay. I like that one. >. Andrew wrote in and said I'd have my car produce more fuel so it would be a perpetual motion machine. Andrew, you don't understand how this works, do you? It's like, kinda like pretty money, but no, we keep going forever. So it was go and create gas. But you'd have to keep it running. Which it was then used and then. It would just keep Okay. I dunno how cars work, so you're probably right. You're probably right. Mitchell wrote in and said, I would want it to generate organic metals, so when Google's Project Ara comes, mine is obsolete. Like that. It's got a nice modular- I like how everyone's creating additional things. Additional things. James wrote in via email, I think it would be interesting if the car generated an electrochemical reaction that repairs the Earth's atmosphere. Everyone has talked about how vehicle emissions are destroying the atmosphere, With this reaction you're truly being good for the environment, and tag line could be, Healing the Earth, one mile at a time. You even thought of a tag line. Yeah. He's already, I'm sold. You're selling it. Healing the earth, one mile at a time. Right, then you'd be like a bad human being if you didn't drive around all the time. Shouldn't you be outside driving, healing the world? Listen, why don't you go heal the world, okay? Get in your car and go heal something. But it's kind of like the one with that I said I had my car clean, clean the pollution. Kind of a similar thing. I like that. Yeah. Okay guys it's time for our very last piece of user feedback which is our phonetographer of the day. Richy wrote in to us and said, hi, I shot this today around Hamburg, Germany. It's sitting around a fountain but I don't know what it is. Sure not a human. [UNKNOWN] Moto X 2014, not edited, like your show, Richy HQ. I like that you're honest, Richy. I like that you're not like, hey, listen love the show. Like, you don't have to suck up to us, you can tell us you just like the show, that's fine. Tolerate the show, love, Richy. Just kidding. Like, Richy. Begrudgingly watch the show. By the way, Moto X for life. Yeah, yeah. Moto X 2014 for life. That's a really awesome picture. Can we, guys, I think this is amazing looking. I do like it. That's a cool fountain, honestly. I mean, yeah, that thing does not- I mean, it looks like it used to be a human and now it's some sort of terrifying demon statue. That it's being transformed over time into a scary demon, and when it's complete, it will come alive and eat the folks of Hamburg. But, I don't know. I mean, yeah, sure, take picture of it. It's not gonna steal your soul or anything, right? That we know of. If you want to send me your phonetography, you can email us, tomorrow@cnet.com. You can also find us on social media. We are @TomorrowDaily on Twitter. And some other social media networks, if you're so inclined. Pretty much anything, I don't know, if you just Google Tomorrow Daily and it will be like, here's all the stuff.>>Yeah, sure.>>Is there another Tomorrow Daily?>>I don't think so. I Googled really hard when I launched this show. Like that was a big thing, I landed most of the major social media sites. It seems like there would be one. It seems like a pretty common Yeah. I thought so, too. I'll tell you what. And also, if you want our own personal stuff, you can either Google our names and/or look us up on something like Twitter @ [UNKNOWN] And @AshleyEsqueda. That's it for the show today, guys. We'll be back tomorrow with a brand new [UNKNOWN] of weird, wonderful science facts. But until then, be good humans. We'll see you guys next time. Bye. [MUSIC]
