CNET News Video: Hangout.net offers 3D social networking

Hangout.net creators call their site the MyPlace for MySpace. Picture a fully customizable 3D space for all of your social networking needs, be it chatting with friends, listening to music, or even making online purchases. CNET's Kara Tsuboi talks with one of the site's creators at TechCrunch 50 running this week in San Francisco.

[ Music ] ^M00:00:09 >> My Space becomes my place. So we got lots and lots of teens and young adults are all online. They've got their social networks, but other than putting up your Facebook pages, how can you bring people in? And so it's a way to engage that you can create a physical space that's online where you can have fun. You can do the things that kids like to do. Watch music or listen to music, watch movies, dress in the clothes that they want and basically hang out online. So it's an extension beyond what is currently available, but with incredibly visual, very exciting experience. >> How is this different than Second Life right now, where you build your own avatar? You customize your own walls. I mean how is this any different? >> Sure. Well, the principal -- Second Life was one of the first sites out there. This is an incredible quality -- the 3-D quality, the ability to move things around. It's less static. So it's kind of like Sims. It's online gaming and Second Life and more things adding up at one time. >> What I found to be very interesting watching the presentation is that there seems to be a lot of corporate sponsors. You mentioned Monster, or Monster Energy Drink. >> Yep. >> Why don't you explain that partnership? >> Yeah, so the overall idea is that kids are very brand conscious. They like certain things. They like certain clothes. They like certain musicians. So what they can do is we develop these relationships with sponsors, corporate sponsors who are well-known brands, as well as taste makers, who are kind of people who set the trends. And we're working very closely with them to basically enable their brands to show up online. That way a kid can actually go on, and they can actually -- their avatar can be wearing a hat, but if they really want to buy that hat in a physical way, they can just click and buy that hat offline. >> And finally, when does the site launch? When can we start playing with it? >> So if people go -- this week here. We're launching here at TechCrunch. This is our world debut.
