Tech Minute: Give your garden a tech boost

1:02 /

Whether you're new to gardening or an old pro, flex your green thumb this season with some help from technology. In this Tech Minute, CNET's Kara Tsuboi digs into apps and gadgets that aim to help your garden bloom.

If you're just getting started planting your vegetable garden, turn to the free website, smartgardener.com, for help. When you begin, you'll enter your zip code and number of people in your household, so the site can figure out what grows best in your region and how much you should plant to feed your family. Then, design a layout for your space to see and order directly through the website. Smart Gardener will also send you reminders for how and when to tend to your garden and help you keep a journal. If you're just interested in an app to remind you about watering, try the $3 iPhone app, Waterbug. Input your plants, get info about their water and sunlight needs, and the Apple will notify you when it's time to give them a little love. Finally, check out that Parrot Flower Power Center to track your plant's vital signs. At 60 bucks a pop you're not gonna buy one for each plant, but it'll be helpful tracking the moisture levels, sunlight, and fertilizer for problem plants and the data syncs with an app over Bluetooth. In San Francisco, I'm Kara Tsuboi, cnet.com for CBS News.
