Geek & Sundry's Ivan Van Norman is the human equivalent of a critical hit (Tomorrow Daily 399)

Culture
On today's show, we deep dive into drones delivering donuts, a new map of the human brain, and of course glasses free 3D at the movies. Then Ivan Van Norman from Geek and Sundry stops by to tell us about hosting a whole bunch of shows. Tabletop Time and all kinds of other stuff. We also have a very special announcement. A very special announcement. Ooh. Maybe it's not that exciting. [LAUGH] Tomorrow Daily. [MUSIC] Greetings, citizens of the Internet. Welcome to Tomorrow Daily, the best [INAUDIBLE] talk show In the known universe. I'm Ashley Esqueda and I'm Jeff Cannata. Happy to be back. So happy to have you back. I felt, you know it's like I always feel after a couple of days, when you're gone, I feel like I look more grizzled after this. I'm like Jeff isn't here, I'm so sad. Just slowly slump down in the chair. Just my posture gets lower and lower. I'm glad to be back. We've got lots of stuff to talk about. We do, so we have to We have to talk. You and we, we and you, you and we. So here's the deal. I said yesterday there was a big announcement. And the announcements are not always good. And I just wanted to announce that we are in fact spinning down to our dailies. Tomorrow Daily will be no more. Yes so that doesn't mean this is the last episode we have more episodes into August coming Yes but it also doesn't mean it's all bad But they are not killing us it is not murdering us no, well first of all they have been generous enough to let us do this show for two years to try to. You know kind of make it what we want it to be and hit our goals and all that stuff. And really, we live in Hollywood and the reality is sometimes your favorite shows gets cancelled. But that's okay because as- Like a phoenix, we will rise from the ashes and create a new show for you. Exactly and you also get to see See your favorite stars from shows that are gone do other things that are also great. So, we are not stars nor are we on television but we're still gonna do great things and we're really excited. We're not quite ready to talk about what those things are yet. However, we are super excited about the prospect of doing What we sort of had planned anyway but it just sort of just kind of happened that his show has to sort of die to So the reason we're telling you now is we want to give you plenty of notice so that you don't just click on the stream one day and we're gone. Yeah, we're gone. So we're gonna mention this over the course of the next Several episodes as we head into our final days of tomorrow daily. Yep. But that doesn't mean today's show is lacking. No way. In delicious content. I'm super excited and obviously we're going to keep making the best show we possibly can. Until the bitter end which will be August 18th by the way. And so on our On he eave of our 400th episode. This is episode 399. Let's hit the headlines. [MUSIC] Jeff, you were not here this week. I had to choose all of the These stories. You had tough choices, I saw. There were some very tough choices. Let's talk about mapping the human brain, because. Yeah let's just do that. As one does on a Thursday. So mapping the human brain, I did not know, I learned a lot. Yeah. After I had read this story. So we are going to update our map, Science's map of the human brain. This is amazing. Look at that. Amazing. This is what it looks like on the inside. It's all those colors, it's all the same. Exactly what it looks like. Like a flower's just in my head. Like a whole bunch of pipe cleaners in there. Yeah. So this is the original map Okay. So, this is what. Boring. No, boring. And you could there is like a round. It was like 40 something areas and then, we've kinda update it later. That's Korbinian Brodmann in 1909 and then, in 1949, we have like the most recent version of the human brain. This map of the human brain So now we are updating it to include, I believe it's 97 additional regions of the brain. Wow. So this was a really interesting process. So they took human participants that had healthy brains And they map them, they study them. And then they took all the information they had and they fed that into an algorithm that with machine learning, was able to create these new region. So Pretty incredible. what defines a region? I believe it is exactly what controls what. Mmm. It's sort of like parceling out a new neighborhood and saying like well this neighborhood was part of this before but we feel like maybe it's a little more specific than that so we are gonna... Carve out something a little smaller and newer. So they strap these people into a machine that reads their brain waves, and they give them a variety of tasks, and they see what fires, in what places in the brain. Right. And then that creates this sort of heat map, of different regions, and because. Where it lights up, where it's lighting up. Right. And because we can, we're able to do that with a greater fidelity at this point, we can see that What we saw was a large region is actually much smaller. Six smaller regions. Exactly. Yeah, something like that. So it's really fascinating stuff and the fact that we have been using the same illustrations for over 100 years is incredible to me. First of all, we think you're always thinking that science and technology and you say Well this is probably cutting edge stuff. They absolutely know what's going on what's happening, but really they don't like well hey now we have the opportunity let's update it. Just an achievement in science. And this has applications in a whole variety of sciences because the more we learn about the brain the more insight we have into how to create machine learning, how to How the very complex systems that happen inside of all of are divvied up into different regions. Right. It is, you know, the idea that we're all walking around with the most sophisticated thing- Computer. On the planet. It's a meat computer, really. The human brain is the most sophisticated thing we have ever discovered. Yeah. That's pretty wild [CROSSTALK] That's pretty great stuff. And of course obviously knowing what these new regions do will Help surgeon, neurosurgeon know where to cut better. Right. How to cut better, what they're going to be affecting if they do cut. So this is a really huge and I they're also think this is would be a great study for evolution I mean there's all kinds of applications that this particular story Has for science and medicine, which is awesome. And you know what's funny, is I bet in 1940, whatever that was, that person was like this is amazing. This may not be the final threshold of sub dissecting regions. We may end up getting another level of fidelity lower You always feel like we've discovered everything. There's somebody who did that and was like, we've done it. It's over, we did it. It's finished, we'll never need to update it again. And then it's, this is my favorite thing about science is that it always surprises us and that's one of my favorite things about doing this show is that We are always surprised at something that's being developed. And I love that I learned something new that we had been using, these maps of the human brain, for over 100 years, which is kind of amazing. Yep. So that is a new map of the human brain which I was very impressed with. Let's talk about drones delivering donuts, because this Also a breakthrough. In 1945, drones were not doing bring donuts. No. You had to walk to a store and get your donuts. Drones had to fly uphill 10 miles in the snow both ways to go get donuts. Now- The 40's were terrible. It was a waste of [UNKNOWN]. [LAUGH] So this I thought was really sweet. So Flirey is this company that has been, they do stuff by air, anytime, anywhere. That's their tagline. So, they have done a few different types of things. Things that are sort of drone delivery, but not quite commercial product where a person is actually able to make an order. Look at that. It just dropped it. [INAUDIBLE] Here comes the donut and a chicken sandwich. 7-Eleven, but like this is the first time an actual order has been made, a drone has been deployed and delivered the food in the U.S. Some guy is like a box of donuts on the ground, what this is the greatest day of my life. These are my donuts, hello. Free donuts. Could you imagine if you just sit under donuts coming down it'd be the greatest moment ever. It's like that song when you're a kid that like It's like donuts falling from the sky or whatever. It's like, if all the rain drops were lemon drops and gum drops. There you go. If all the raindrops were donuts. Is this something? Or is this not anything? It's weird because I'm gonna give you a kind of non-answer which is, it's kind of both. Yeah. So, which ends up being like, okay, it's great that there's a delivery happening, and that it's a commercial delivery, and it was within a certain time frame. Somebody made an order, it was brought to their home, and it's a private residence President, but also I think this is like also very gimmicky Right. And it started as a promotional thing. Obviously they are part of the several eleven and all this stuff. So but then again it's like you see things sort of like the golf cart jet pack we saw as we can again it's like, even though it's promotional it's still good for people to see it because it helps normalize the concept. [CROSSTALK] I think that's an important thing, I think that's absolutely true, it indicates a potential reality that we're heading towards. Although I would say, looking at that video I don't live in a big, wide field. No. You know, until it can shoot So how do you deliver that? A delivery into my apartment balcony. [LAUGH] So an interesting thing I was reading and drone deliveries are talked, a lot of companies considering it are thinking of a few different things. One being roof delivery, rooftop delivery. Yeah. If there would be a container Container basically that would drop it into. My concern is but it is like okay you order some donuts and it's hot in a desert. So you're doughnuts are all just melted. Can I get a soda? How do you return them. How do you return the doughnuts. These are not good. I wanna send these back. Or the chicken sandwich you get it's obviously gross. Yeah. It;s gone off. Because it's been staying in the sun. You don't want a chicken salad sandwich coming to you in the middle of the Nevada dessert. I love the idea of rooftop delivery in my apartment building because it would I walk up there in my bathrobe and slippers, and there be like For team people I go, hey guys. Hey. You guys waiting for your donuts? Yeah, me too. Same, samsies. Is that yours? No, I don't think that's mine. I ordered sprinkles. [LAUGH] [LAUGH] It's just like a bunch of parachutes coming down. Everybody just waiting as parachutes of donuts. Because everybody's sitting [CROSSTALK] in the morning, just like Sipping their coffee, waiting for their donuts. Aw man. It could happen. That's a future that I want to live in. [LAUGH] I'm not really a hundred percent sure. Okay, last story and then we will go to break and welcome Ivan VanNorman to the show. Glasses free 3D. So who knew the secret to movie theater scale glasses free three dimensional film would be the Nintendo 3DS? Well, I mean, it was doing 3D. Yeah. It was doing it, it was doing glasses 3D. Although, you know, you don't want to move that 3DS very much. Because you're like, [SOUND]. Okay, so here is how that would work. Because a lot of people ask us this. They, a lot of people said, well I am very confused. Because I wanna know if I use my 3DS, I barely- I could have show them throwing their glasses- I'm like boom, I hate this. If you used your Nintendo 3DS, if you've ever used it, you'll notice that the field of view view is not great. Right. It's good, like it's not great. But what it is in that sweet spot it's really good. I agree. I usually have my 3D on when I am playing 3DS games. A lot of people turn it off. Not me. Right. No it's really good. Especially the new 3DS. It's very, very good. So the way this team at MIT set this up is there idea. So it uses a parallax So what they want to do is, they want to create multiple points for Parallax [UNKNOWN]. That are individually tailored to each person sitting in a theater. Each seat, so when you sit down in that seat your view of the screen is actually different than everybody else's view of the screen because you have a very specific parallax Experience targeted right at you. So that's how they feel they can do large scale 3D movies. So I have two things to say on this, first of all, a lot of people saying I hate 3D movies. And I guarantee you, what most Mostly what they are saying is, I hate wearing glasses when I'm watching a movie. That- So getting away from glasses huge win. Great. And I think it makes 3D viable- And I always have to wear double glasses and I hate that. Right, sometimes me too. And it's annoying. Just wearing a big screen in front of your eyes, it darkens things. Sometimes the polarization is off. There's all kinds of weird stuff that can happen. Brightness is down. Yeah, there's a lot of weird stuff. Second thing I'll say is that the problems you might have with a 3DS or the problems you might have at home. You know we've been to CES many years and they'd always have the glasses With 3D TVs. Yep. The key here as you said is controlling where someone sits because in a movie theater you have complete control over where the audiences viewing angle is. So at home someone could be sitting on a couch Couch standing. Sitting ont he floor, they might be sitting in a chair whatever that is. You can't give them an individualized experience but in a theater you can do that. I think this is very encouraging because when 3D is good in movies I think it's very good. I love Seeing great 3D? Avatar. Like I'm gonna say, it's a great movie. But like Avatar in 3D, gorgeous.>> Yeah. The Jungle of Books just last year. Unbelievable. Incredible. Ghost Buster. Yeah. Like really cool 3D. These are all great 3D.>> And if you could do it without glasses, I think it could really Reinvigorate the 3D film going experience I really do. Yeah. I agree. This is also cool and if I could make any I guess if I could make any movie that has not yet been made in 3D like retro fit a movie industry I feel like I'd want it to be like Hells Bells. [LAUGH] Like old, go old. From like the 40s. My gosh, that's funny. Howard Hughes. [LAUGH] Like I kinda want that in 3D. Like I'd go see that movie. It's a Wonderful Life 3D. Yeah. Singing in the Rain would be great in 3D. There you go, it would actually. That would be really delightful. Yeah. Or like one of those really big 50s musicals Be amazing. That'd be pretty cool. We saw that like the ladies jumping into the water. And we see for that. That's what I'm saying. Yeah, hail Caesar. Yeah, there you go. Hail Caesar. You don't see that way everyday. As a movie, you think you don't wanna see in 3D, but you kind of, I feel like you kinda show. I'm room for this tech to work. Yeah. Room for this work. I think it could be really really transformative. They haven't made a prototype yet on the Scale of the theater, but they said that they did it in an auditorium and it worked perfectly. You don't wanna get up and go to the bathroom, you get up and go to the bathroom and you look at the screen, and it's like, [SOUND] Yeah, you're really saying blah, because you'll fall down the stairs. That is it for headlines. We are gonna take a quick break, we're gonna bring in Ivan Van Norman, and we're gonna talk about tabletop gaming. Whoo, my favorite. He's a Jewish dad. Aw. And all sorts of other stuff. So stick around, it's Tomorrow Daily. [MUSIC] Welcome back to the show everybody. Out guest today, I'm very excited, to welcome to the studio. He is a game designer. He is also a producer on Table Top, one of my favorite shows because I'm gonna be on it next season.>> [LAUGH] He's also a host on Geek and Sundry. A master of all things board game Author of a children's book. What is it that you don't do. Ian Van Norman, thanks for stopping by. Hey, thanks for having me. That was a great intro. God, I should just put that on my bio, master of all things. Master of all things. I feel like I need to have the sort of omen in front of me while you say that. There you go. So I'm very excited as a fellow table top aficionado. I'm very glad to have you here. The first thing I want to ask you about is writing your own role playing game. God, so I wrote it with my buddy in college, it's called Outbreak Undead, it's a zombie survival Simulation RPG. Wow! Okay. Real world zombie invasion. Real world zombie invasion. Well, it's got different scales, but what people often like about it is, is that you can accurately simulate any kind of zombie apocalypse. In any type of situation you want, with any kind of zombies that you want, the degree of realism that if you take a 30 question personality test on our website, it pops out your core stats if you were to play yourself as a character. Wow. Awesome. Yup, an avatar system, which there are some of them out in the world, and there are some zombie games in the world, but not really one that mix and kiss. I was gonna say this sort of seems like Kiss of zombie. What are you talking? [LAUGH] There's sort of theme like a really great marriage of Play Gunk, Panda Neck, and Dungeon's and Dragon, and Walking Dead. Yeah. And so, people always asked us like what's the difference between you and other role playing games and we're like, we'll there's not games out there that represent like the hack and Slash of the classic like I'm just going for body count, right? But then there's we collect the walking dead, which is just- Survival. My survival. For this, you stay at the farm- It is- For a year. Right, and sometimes your stronghold. You make Carl stay in the house? Yes. [LAUGH] [LAUGH]. I would love to play that because I had the chance to play the end of the world game. Right. The embassy play that. Similar in the sense that they do want to try to make, they want to make it, so you can make a costume character that might closely represent yourself but the way that they do character creation is that you put a dice in the bag, you have your core stats laid out and then everyone votes weather or not you have higher or [CROSSTALK] lower standards so it's you or not, very political. Yeah also a very good way too loose friends Very quickly [CROSSTALK] what do you mean you don't think I'm a four? [LAUGH] Yeah my charisma is at least a seven! [LAUGH] So it's a good bit, but we try to do an arbitrary device because our test was designed by people who build tests for psychological essays. Wow. Interesting. Ya, cause my partner who I helped make the book with has a background in psychology. Do you guys go by Briggs-Myer? Anything in specific? Not that specific. Like Boson? Any of the? The idea is that the test... The test is supposed to like not lead you, Okay. Not tell you that you're supposed to be doing any particular thing and it mixes the order of so that there's no real question about whether or not that's going to be the right choice. Right, right. Kind of situation. Like yeah that's the one, I want to answer for the stat that I'm looking for. Yeah. Yeah I get it. So it's good because it doesn't force an identity on you that you are personifying or that you wish to personify. It's very neutral. Cool. I want to ask you another question as a deep dive board gaming question. I gotta say I was so excited to introduce the two of these people because I knew they would hit it off right away. We did, right away. I want to ask you about [UNKNOWN] because the biggest board game award in the world was given out last week or two weeks ago now. Yep. Some huge games up for the Kennerspiel which is sort of like the gamers game award. Times stories are absolutely adore. Which is great. Yep. Pandemic Legacy. Yeah. Which is the number one game on board game. And it has been for awhile. It's like that exam right now. But then, in one thought it was going to win, but. Shoo in. Upset. [INAUDIBLE] sky Isle of Sky's. I haven't played Isle of sky. Have you. I have it and I haven't played it. It was a pretty big upset. Now I feel like we should. I feel like maybe we should now. I have played it. I am sorry. It was one of the games that we were actually reviewing for Table Top. I have played it. It's a great game. Yeah. I hope so. It's a really good game but in this mans one opinion. embodying opinion. I just seriously thought [UNKNOWN] legacy was gonna kill it. Yeah I did too. I just sort of assumed that would win. I saw [UNKNOWN] [UNKNOWN] travel to Germany to accept the award. Aw. But here's the catch Showed on his social media too. Where he was like, I'm ready. But it's, I think my only theory around this is that, in Europe, the board gaming circuit there is so vastly different. The likes and desires. And there are, it's to the point of where there's like Euro games and now what they're starting to call, Amerigames. Or if you're a little snobby some people say Ameritrash. [LAUGH] Yeah Which I think is a terrible term. Well. Right. Because all games are great in their own terms and ways. And you wouldn't call another game Eurotrash either, there you go. Right. There you go, but the point is they are Made for different audiences. Made for different audiences. Sure. And Eye in the Sky has a lot more of a robust kind of dynamic game may have been more of an alert. And [UNKNOWN] legacy while completely changing the way games have been done. My old [UNKNOWN] with legacy did it first. Sure. But who cares who did it first, it was a great game. It was really well. Yeah so I kind of feel the same way. But are you playing stuff now? What are you playing right now? What are the hidden gems out there. Because obviously the big games people have probably heard about. Because Because board games have seen such a huge resurgence, in part because of Table Top and Geek Insundry. There's a lot of saturation. We've seen a lot of that come back up. I've seen now at Target you can get Ticket to Ride, and you can get Settlers of Catan. And that was stuff you could not Find at a regular retail store. You had to go to a special board game store. Which they were rarer and rarer, now they're coming back. You go to Barnes and Noble you can buy miniature games there. Exactly. You can buy core rulebooks for D&D. Even Dark Heresy which is the Warhammer 40k RPG. They exist in these places now. Yeah. For everyone to enjoy. Right. And so the ones I'm liking right now, the obscure one that's not new but it's one of my favorite games and I keep coming back to it over and over again is Raptor. It's a two-player game, that's a tactics, it's a cat and mouse game in which you each have an active deck, there's only nine cards in the deck, and you have a raptor who is trying to protect her three babies And you have a team of scientists you are trying to capture the three babies. Interesting. And well there's actually a five babies hit it but that's just being technical for the people out there who I believe whom I believe well I introduce frog babies in the set. [LAUGH] Shooting up the stream. [LAUGH] [LAUGH] It is the worst I ever seen. Click but the The reason I like it is because it's a two player game, which are rare, and it has a high replay value. And the idea is that you each put a card down that has a number value, and just like War, whoever has The lowest number wins. And then if there's any difference between the numbers, say like the scientist played a three and the raptor plays a six. The raptor gets three action points to move around the board. Likewise the scientist will get to do the same thing. Interesting. And it's kind of a tug of war Tactics that just really doesn't have what do they call it, non symmetry, nonsymmetrical tactics, which means that they both it's not just two different factions and you have the same thing and they're just pushing to get it. Right. With their different strategies, they both have unique ways of controlling the board with their cards and with their action points. Cool. How did you find, cuz that sounds fun. [CROSSTALK] I love that it's a two player game cuz my husband and I have no friends. [LAUGH] But [INAUDIBLE] I don't wanna call to bring anybody over. Right. I know, yeah. Is that sometimes you wanna play a board game, and it's like, then I gotta get people to come to my house. And it's like, it's such a thing, in a way, to get people to come to your house, because everything is so spread out. Which is why, whenever I host board games now, it's like, if you're hosting, you're paying for food. Like that's kind of a qualifier. If you gas to get over, then the host gets to feed you. Host feeds. I like that. You drive, host feeds. I like it. It's a good rule. You mentioned a new show you guys are starting that is, you described in a very cool way. Okay So we have two shows on Geek and Sundry. One is our board game show called Game The Game which we do every Thursday. I was on it. You were totally on it. It was so much fun. What did we play, again? Miniature Tiny Kingdom, [INAUDIBLE] it? Yeah, Tiny Kingdom. [CROSSTALK] That was it. I was like, I just remember us speaking in very small voices. Tiny [INAUDIBLE] Kingdom, yeah. We have tiny epic West. Stern now Very nice which is something that we'll be doing a video on pretty soon. That's our board game show we are like 60 episodes at this point and it is so fun it's with Becca Right Becca Scott Kerns who is just a real back stabber [LAUGH] I mean. It's not where I expected you to go. Is that? She look so innocent and kind. She looks like medieval princess, she will, she will take you out. Vicious cheater. Vicious cheater, unbelievable cheater. I hope she's watching then **** it. [LAUGH] Vicious cheater and also one of the most ruthless board game player I've ever encountered and I loved her for it. That girl loves away. She's the Dexter of board game Yup. He is the Dexter board. Yup. But then the show we're talking about before getting on here, it's as we have a role playing game show on Monday nights from seven until question mark usually ten or 11 In which we're, its basically a certain set of characters that are jumping from RPG universe to RPG universe to RPG universe. It's kind of like sliders in quantum leap meats role playing game. I love that. Interesting. Somebody get me Scott Bakula. Right, seriously. And what makes the show the fun is that then all the same characters So it's not you have a character to identify with as you jump yes cuz the Thursday night critical role show, one of the reasons that people love it is because they get so attached to the characters and the story kind of unfolds. Holds around them, and I really- Well, you can get invested. You can get invested in your favorite character or your favorite sort of storyline amongst the characters. While still showcasing different role-playing games, which was my key thing I wanted to do. I was like hey, there's other things out there besides D&D. So we're playing World of Darkness right now, we've moved on to Werewolf: The Forsaken, which is still part of World of Darkness, But in the past like outbreak undead. There was obviously a show a couple of silly one offs. We did there's actually a snakes on a plane roll playing game. I found it on the internet. Nice. What. Yep. That's awesome. I love the idea of not are you jumping into a new story, a new venue, a new time period perhaps. But new systems. There are completely new rule sets to learn each episode. Yep. Very challenging. Yeah. You'll have to learn a whole new system like every three months or so. Yeah. Or like even every month depending on what it is. Yeah. And so we fill it in with lots of little things that have like a rule. The rules are often on page. Like everyone is John. Which we played on international tabletop day. Every PC is John, which is one person. But they all bid the players to take control of John's mind. And they go and try to fulfill their objectives while they have control of John's body, but at any point, John could fall asleep, and they'll have to bid for control over Johnny then. John can be knocked unconscious? Yeah. John could slip and fall. There's so many things that could happen to John. So many things. He could just fall asleep cuz he's narcoleptic. He's tired, yeah. Today he just suddenly falls asleep, didn't get enough [INAUDIBLE] It is a hilarious system. I gotta play that. We play- Blood sugar levels go low, no. I love indie role play games cuz they're such wild. I was playing a game- So many cool ideas. Yeah, right. It's things that you'd be like, I don't know if this works, but I like it. Yeah, and even if you only take the time to do one session with it. Yeah. Like if you're getting that enjoyment out of it, that's wonderful. Absolutely. There's Fake Core, which is gonna be featured on Tabletop this year. We have another game we played on Tabletop called Miss Spent Youth. Which is a really fun indie RPG, which you're basically playing the 1980s, God what was that, [CROSSTALK] documentary about the punks. I can't recall it. Something like If there was a chat from your end. I mean like, every all the things. They'll tell you on YouTube in the comment factor. Yeah, the comments, I'm sure. The show post, I'm sure. You like Sid Vicious or something? Yeah, but the whole point is that it's suppose to be like a misfit youth, youth culture rising up against an authority and the GM plays the authority And the youth culture who's part of this is trying to work in this dystopian or system that they don't like. And they have to go through the character arcs that you often see in those kind of movies or those kind of stories. A Gattaca, you know, having a hard time recalling some of the other ones right now, but that kind of dystopian society. Right. The Giver. Right, yeah. And it's fun. Hunger Games. Because the whole mechanic of it is that when you When the authority makes you mad enough, you're supposed to grab your dice and go, I stand up. And then you roll to see at what level, if it's 1 through 12, and if you land on that number, if the authority hasn't already Grab that number. And then you can claim that number and be like I'm gonna use my ingenuity to get myself out of this system. Because each character has their own personification. Skill, right okay. But if the authority claimed that number previously in part of another role, the authority wins Ugh. And then you have to find out how to go around it in the next chapter. There's nothing quite as powerful to stand up against something than to roll dice. [LAUGH] That's exactly right. I stand up. Roll these dice. We're going to wrap things up but when can everybody watch all of these shows Specifically give us the schedule, because you guys have a lot going on. Sure. So Monday nights, seven to eleven the Forever Verse is the show in which we jump from system to system, from universe to universe exploring all the wildness that RPG systems have to offer and Thursday night Game to Game is from four to Seven and that's all both on the Geek and Sundry twitch show Twitch.tv/geekandsundry and- Which by the way has a really nice chat room. They're so nice. Super nice people in the chat there. It's a very strange internet phenomenon that chat room, really nice. Our community is amazing. Very welcoming, funny, great. And if you're one of those people come join us. Yeah. Cuz we liked to have you. [INAUDIBLE] thank you so much for being here man. I could talk to you for like two hours and it would be nothing. That's fine, it would be so easy. You guys are easy to talk to. Yeah so are you. You're so chill. So are you. And then what's the book? The book. If you're going to Gen Con for gamer's out there. The ABC's of RPGU which is a children's book and activity book will be featured starting this Gen Con. Fantastic title. You can't pick it up there 'cuz we have to ship with the backer's first. But, if you want to come and check it out, look at it, and then, it's gonna be shipping in September. You can't pre-order it right now in backer kit It's a 36 page full cover. A is for adventure, may you always be on one. B is for book, the source of all of our fun. C is for creatures of all shapes and size. D is for dice, can you count all the sides? Well done. So good so good. Easy. I just fell asleep in my little onesie. [LAUGH] In your Tauntaun sleeping bag. Exactly. Will you make us an audiobook that we can in fact all- That's actually being done by Mary MclEllan Great! Wonderful. Yeah, she's doing the [UNKNOWN]. And then the Library Bards did the sing-along song. Wonderful. Perfect. [LAUGH] That is awesome. One step ahead of you, Ashley. [LAUGH] Ivan, thank you so much for coming on the show and hanging out with us. Geek and Sundry, obviously, they're right down the street from us. We love all of our friends and Nerdist and Geek and Sundry. So make sure you check out Game the Game, cuz it's a blast. And check out her episode. Because it's so good. It is really fun. It's really good. I want to come. I want to be part of the fun. You're next. One of the best moments in all four seasons of tabletop, I will tell you. It was great. That tabletop episode that I'm on is pretty amazing. I can say who's there. You can say who's there. John Ross [UNKNOWN] was there, [INAUDIBLE] which we had on the show a little while ago. We had Michelle Morrow on the show, Will of course as game master. And then Travis. Travis Willingham. Travis Willingham was there. From Critical Role. And it was just the most Fun. I am telling you, I can't wait for that show to come out. But Ivan, thank you so much for coming on the show. We are going to take a quick break and then we'll be right back to tell you a little bit about Everest VR. I climbed Mt. Everest in virtual reality and what we're into this week, and of course, our phonetographer of the day. So don't click away. It's Tomorrow Daily. [MUSIC] Welcome back to the show that was delightful Like I said, I want to be your best friend. I think we could hang out. I feel like we could make that happen. Ivan Vanorran. Totally delightful. Loved it. Great. We hope you enjoyed it too and now I want to talk about virtual reality and I know it's one of your favorite things. It is. It's like welcome back to the show Jeff you get to talk about board games and VR, woo! I know. It's like a party just for you. So I got to climb Mt. Everest, which is pretty awesome. But I did it in a virtual reality headset because I- Much safer. Because I can barely climb up a flight of stairs without getting winded, much less the top of the tallest peak on Earth. So check this out. [MUSIC] Today I climbed Mount Everest. Well, at least I did virtually. Everest VR is an incredible experience VR studio so far and visual effects studio RVX collaborated to create this exploration simulation. And while it doesn't take very long to complete it did leave me with feelings of respect and wonder for earths highest speak. Around 300,000 high definition images where used of the real Everest to create a striking render of the mountain at various parts of interest. You'll start out at basecamp, make an offering for a good climb, grab your tools, and begin your trek to the summit. Between stops you'll watch documentaryesque segments about Mt. Everest. Offering a closer look at what real life climbers go through to reach the top of the mountain. Each location has unique trivia and information about how climbers navigate the treacherous obstacles they face and then you get a small virtual taste of that locations visuals. I even had to get down on all fours and crawl into a tent. As I finally reached the top of Everest, I realized how little I knew about the journey to the summit and how brutal the conditions get as The climbers reach higher altitude. Being able to use virtual reality to experience extreme situations and dangerous [UNKNOWN] may someday prove to give us a larger sense of empathy for others who complete this monumental task in real life and also give us a chance to do something we'd probably never do in the real world Everest DR will be coming soon to HTC Vibe, Oculus Rift, and Playstation DR. We climbed Mount Everest in virtual reality you guys. We made it happen. And there you have it. That's pretty cool. I got a chance to do this too at E3 last year and it is quite something. It really is. You don't realize How transportive that experience is. You do feel a sense of I don't want to walk close to that edge. Yeah. My gosh [CROSSTALK]. Going over that crevasse was extremely harrowing for me. I don't like heights. And so I really had a feeling of heights. And because you have something over your eyes. It really does, your brain cannot help but feel like should I be scared of this? There is that moment, where your brain's like I feel like I should be scared of this a little bit just in case. And because they're using that photogrammetry which is that actual Photo realism. It's amazing. Like a visual it doesn't feel like video game. Not at all. It's seems like you're actually in a photo realistic place. A climb, yes you're in a photo realistic climb. It's amazing. Of Everest and it's really great. I love the documentaries stuffs. I like learning it's one of my favorite things. And so to see this. Sort of mini documentaries between each point of interest, I really love that. I had so much information, again, learning things that I had no idea about before, especially in particular these sort of specific challenges climbers face as they go up to the top. It's obviously is a really brutal climb. So few people accomplish it. It's very dangerous. People die going up there, but To know the details of it really gives you a greater sense of empathy and it's really amazing. Yeah, and it's gonna come out for free, right? On August 2nd. I think it's August 2nd on Steam, and it'll be available, like I said, on Vibe. Oculus and Playstation VR in the future so when Playstation VR releases. So really cool stuff. Thank you to [UNKNOWN] for letting us check that out. You want to maybe talk about some stuff that you like. Let's do it. Let's go to Into It. [SOUND] I am gonna tell you about a [UNKNOWN] Mind-blowing game. Please. Literally. [LAUGH] We need to talk about Headlander. Yeah, it'll knock your head off. [LAUGH] It'll knock your head off, knock your head right off. No joke, you will knock your own head right off because that's basically the premise of Headlander Lander, so Headlander, you pick a head. You pick a face, and then you're a human astronaut with just a head. That's all you got. And you gotta take over robot bodies. You're head has a special vacuum power. So you can suck the heads off of other robots and take over their bodies and run around. And it has this great Retro-futurism vibe. It's a metroidvania-esque game. You're running around, it feels so much like Samus Aran. You're able to take over and sort of aim, and at the same time you're running. I cannot say enough good things about this game. It is so bizarre, and yet so fun. Yes. You've been playing to. I have. It's quite good. I've been playing it on PS4. It is It's got a as you said a visual sense that unlike any video game out there. It's kinda based on this old late 60s early 70s sci-fi. You know it's kinda like- Like exploitation sc-fi. Yeah, like swinging 60s- Like really weird, yeah. Sort of scuzzy but also slick sci-fi-ish. It's not the beautiful utopia of Retro, atomic retro era. But, it's sort of like this retro future that someone would have made on drugs in the 70s. Yeah. Well, that seems. It's very heavy metal. It's a very heavy metal but, it's based like it's really slick and Fun and it's just weird but it works. Somehow it works. It really does. It all comes together and it really works. It's clever, it's funny. Yeah, it's funny. Yeah. And honestly guys, full disclosure. I'm a huge Double Fine fan girl. I love Double Fine. I also love Adult Swim Games. I love all their mobile games. I have a blast with their games, so [BLANK_AUDIO] I was already made to like this game, this game is a game that I was probably going to like anyway but I was so pleasantly surprised by how much I ended up liking it or I'll probably like this. Yeah. So, really- And then I was like I love this. Really great puzzles, a fun universe to be in, Yes. Great combat mechanics. Scrolling to combat, I mean, it's a blast. I really highly recommend it, it feels so good on console. The controls feel really nice, they don't feel flimsy. Which a lot of times, with a platformer you get really frustrated because there's that over correct that you sort of have. Not in this game, which is great. Yeah, you do this thing where you've got your head on a body, on a robot body. And you can be shoot, shoot, shoot, run towards an enemy Pop your head right before your body is about to explode, the body explodes takes out the enemy and your head flies away safely. Yeah and your head floats around in the sky and then you use the underside of your helmet as a vacuum tube and you fly over another robot and you suck his robot head off and then you take that body and you keep running. It's really fun I love it. Headlander that's the name of the game. I have been into a new movie that I'm not sure most people have heard of. It's called Captain Fantastic. And it stars Viggo Mortensen. This is a movie that I walked out of that really changed my whole perspective on the world. The idea is it's this father who is raising his kids out in the woods. Completely off the grid. Off the grid. Okay. And you talk about technology, we know we're obsessed with technology and science. He is trying to educate his kids, make them read books and learn things. These kids are completely disconnected with any pop culture. They don't have television, they don't have radio, they don't have music to listen to Bach, and Mozart. And they read classic novels and. Discuss literature and philosophy. He's really trying to create superheros. He forces them to do these physical challenges, and makes them climb mountains, and do stuff everyday. And then at a certain point they have to go back into society and it's them entering into society. Reintegrating. Yes. And the boy at one point says he's talking to a girl he just met, the oldest boy, and she's asking him about Star Trek. And he's like I don't know anything about Star Trek. Like I've never heard of it. Yeah. Fascinating movie, it really makes you think. I feel like Vigo Mortensen is the only person that could play this part. He's amazing. And there are people who do that. Yeah. Here, in the states. They live completely off the grid, they raise their kids off the grid. I mean, it's a really That's not a, that's uncommon, but it's certainly not unheard of, so it's a really interesting. I like to think this is a sequel to Lord of the Rings. This is Aragorn later in life. Yeah, Aragorn later is just like I wanna go back to that. How do I find? He can't really find Rivendell. Gonna live in the Appalachians and raise a family. Yeah I can't find Rivendell so it's just any old sports will work but yeah highly highly recommend it it made me think, it's called Captain Fantastic which is kind of a misleading title. It is I've never heard of this movie and now I want to go see it. You should it really stayed with me and it hit me emotionally and intellectually and it really doesn't come down on one side or the other it like provides an even handed look at What might be good about this and what might be good about this and what might be bad about it Sure, yeah, well that's awesome, that's Intuit, so let us know on Twitter what your Intuit are [CROSSTALK] I would like to hear, I like recommendations so send me the stuff that you like, that is it for Intuit so let's do the very last part of our show today Phonetographer for the day. [MUSIC] Greg. You sent in this picture. You took it with your iPhone 6. You sent us a series of pictures, I picked two of my favorites. Ashley and Jess, my name is Greg. I hope I didn't procrastinate too long in sending this in. Hopes to make it on the show. You did not. You made it. Right at the finish line. Spoiler alert, you made it. Spoiler alert, you did it. Attached are photos of Billy the budgie. A budgie? One of the pictures shows Billy the day I rescued him. I was driving to work in the 405 of the parking lot, so I got off and took side streets that I usually don't take. I was at a stop light and I saw a crow attacking this little budgie. The crow was pulling its' feathers out to keep him from flying away. Come on crow! I know crows are classic crows right? Total I scare the crow away and grab the budgie. He must have bit me a dozen times. Poor guy was in survival mode. You can see from the photo he was missing a lot of his feathers and his wing was sprained. We named him Billy and now he lives at the office Monday through Friday and comes home with me on the weekends. I'm very lucky to work at a creative place that is okay with us keeping a bird at the office. He flies all around visiting with different people or just dive-bombing people when he gets bored. He loves smartphones as you can see when he was on a coworkers hat and wanted to see See what's on his phone which I love that picture a lot. And he just picked up skateboarding but has lots of work to do there. And then he sent me some Instagram pictures and stuff too. And said I give you guys full permission to use the photos attached I shot with my iPhone6 Adorable. Billy the budgie. You survived Billy. It's like the universe made it so you were in the right place at the right time to have Billy in your life. I love the idea of Billy the budgie just hanging out at work and then constantly flying over to people and being like Crows am I right? I know. Crows, they're the worst guys. Aren't they the worst? They keep a coffee mug with water in it and he perches on it in the break room and he's like crows guys. Guys can we talk about crows for a second? Billy, we always talk about crows. I know but they're the worst right? I know but seriously we really have to talk about how awful they are. They are so rude. No, I love this picture and so I was thinking because we only have a few weeks left of Tomorrow Daily, and people really love sending in pictures of their pets, you want to just continue it? Hey, Want to just take it to the end? I think we should continue pets. You guys have sent in Seriously, I see every picture and every single one of them makes my day. [LAUGH] Like, whenever I feel bummed out, I just open up Tomorrow Daily's email and it's like, I just read the Fontographer's stuff. Your pictures are seen and enjoyed even if they don't make it on the show, which is FYI by yours truly. So, let's tell you how to make that happen. Yes. If you wanna be our Fontographer, send to tomorrow@cnet.com, your photo A description of, a little story about why you took that photo? Greg had a great story. Great story. Feel free to make up a fictional story about your pet. [LAUGH] We believe that they are all true. Right. I'll take it. We wanna know what device you took it on, cuz we are a tech show. Yes. And we also need permission to use it on our show. To make sure that that's all kosher. Yeah. And if there's any remote chance we could mispronounce your name, tell us how to pronounce it. Yes. We're on social media, but we will only be on social media for a few weeks. So I'm going to start recommending that you follow us on Twitter. I'm @Ashley Esqueda. I'm @Jeff Cannata. Very easy to find us. And of course, all Seen that, because that's where our new stuff is gonna be ending up. Very cool.>> [UNKNOWN] the media. So yeah, a couple weeks last, [UNKNOWN] last day of the show.I'm sorry for all of you who watch the show every single day, because we're gonna mention this every time, and I feel like it's sorta harming, stabbing you a little bit more.>> [LAUGH] Every day Gonna be bummed out which, we're bummed too, but also excited about the future and, seriously you guys, we're really looking forward to what's coming next, it's gonna be really fun. That is it for the show this week, we'll be back next week. No long show next week, because Producer Logan will be in Hawaii, like a jerk, so Whoa, wow. So we'll have Producer Stephanie in. [LAUGH] And Producer Stephanie will be helping us, Producer Cookies, as I like to call her, Producer Cookies will be in to help us out with the show. And so we're gonna do four short shows, actually. Awesome, see you then. That is it guys. Until next time. Be good humans. Bye. [MUSIC]
