CES 2012: First hands-on of Cube 3D home printer

3:06 /

At CES 2012, we'll give you a First Look at Cubify's 3D printer for the home. It makes chess pieces, bracelets, and 6-inch pumps.

Hey, guys. Brian Tong here at CES 2012. And we have an amazing first look, a first time ever. This is the Cube 3D printer from Cubify and joining me is Rajeev Kulkarni. He is the General Manager of the Consumer Solutions Division. This is just some amazing stuff. We have a lot of these models that this printer has been able to build. And, can you kinda talk to us about bringing 3D Printing to the consumer. Sure. What we're doing here is we're launching the platform for cubify.com of which Cube is one part of the solution. The platform essentially brings, create and make environment into the homes of people. This is where people can bring their ideas to life in 3D. With this printer, what we're doing is we're making the process of creating digital content and actually producing it in your house, quite easy to use and simple and intuitive such that anybody in the house, a mom, a dad, a kid can actually it and make fun stuff out of it. Now, this is a printer that prints out an object 5-1/2 x 5-1/2 cube square of the space that it takes up. It's gonna retail for $1299 in the first quarter of 2012. Right. It makes some of these really intricate products. There's a lot of community that has support. I mean look at this, you know, on a larger scale, their service allows you to upload some of these images to a Cloud Service site. This is... This pretty much a chain mail Michael Jackson glove you have right on here. Right. Yeah. Yeah. So can you talk about bring this to the masses. How easy is it for someone to do this? So... So, the issue is you can't just hand a printer to somebody and say go do stuff. They need digital files to being with. So what cubify.com does is it provides an avenue for the community to come together and upload 3D printable designs on Cubify itself. What it does is it takes the entire the process of creation and making and brings it and makes it very accessible to any person who wants to do it. So for example, we're taking, you know, this platform shoe like this and someone might have submit the based design of the shoe but all these intricate work can be added on by consumer to make this theirs, right? Correct. So this is a fairly complex design and you wouldn't expect some of the artists on Cubify to upload this design. Somebody else would add an app in which where you can write a name, put your signature or add some other aspect to this design. Once you add that, you can either print a small version on this cube or you can use a Cloud 3D Printer service to have this delivered to your house. Something as large as this trendy belt, this was made from a 3D Printer in a larger scale like this. Yes, in one piece. Yeah, in one piece. Right. All right. This is amazing stuff we'll be looking to launch out, at least people getting access to cubify.com as are submitting the work. What day is that gonna happen? Well, the Cube we launched in the next few months, we haven't decided the date. Cubify.com, the platform we launch on the 10th. And you can even make things like this train whistle from this printer? Yeah, you can do it. All right. So can I give it a try? Absolutely. You blow hard as you say? Yeah. All right. Here we. There you go. It's all right. So there we have it. It's the Cube 3D Printer coming out in the first quarter of 2012. Rajeev, thanks for your time. Thank you very much. Bye.
