Car Tech Video: Ferrari California HELE

0:51 /

Is a green Ferrari just for posers?

You know, it's a new age when Ferrari's big news is green. At Paris 2010 they showed a California with a system called "HELE", High Emotion Low Emissions. Aside from sounding as if they've hired the Asians to their acronyms, the system integrates automatic stuff start that can re-kick the engine in a quarter second. It has a smart engine fan and smart fuel pump logic as well as air conditioning that can scale back its pumping effort as needed, and gearshift actuators that used less electricity. All of that combines to bump up the fuel economy, they say, about 23% while cutting CO2 emission up to 20% in city driving. Just the stuff you care about when you but a Ferrari.
