The Buzz Report: Extra: Google's calling!

1:48 /

In late-breaking news this week, Google announces in-Gmail calling and Apple's rockin' its September axe.

Hi, I'm Molly Wood, and welcome to the Buzz Report Extra Edition, the show about the tech news that just can't wait until next week! First up, Google announces a new calling feature that lets you call a phone from your computer, from inside the Gmail interface. You get a new Call phone button in your Google Chat and you can just click it, dial a number, or type in a contact. Add it to Google Voice and it's a world where you have one phone number everywhere and any device is a phone. Crazy. Plus, it's a world where you never have to leave the Gmail interface, you can do practically all your communications right there--a noncreepy alternative to the guy who takes conference calls in the john! Which I guess begs the question ... if everyone's at their computers using Gmail in Google's future world ... who you gonna call? Also, I think Skype is even madder about this than Foursquare was about Facebook Places. Seriously. Ouch. In other late-breaking news this week, Apple sent out invitations to its September music event ... it's happening September first. The invite features an image of a guitar with the Apple logo in the center. Speculation is centering on a new iPod Touch with a front-facing camera and retina display, the outside possibility of a music subscription service to replace Lala, and please don't anybody say Beatles on iTunes. Just ... don't even say it. As for this week's rumors of a 99-cent iTunes TV rental deal ... not likely at the guitar show, but hey, we still need SOMETHING to speculate about! And finally, an extra edition of Clogging the Tubes ... it's Hungover Owls. Go there. Laugh. And enjoy your weekend. That's the Buzz Report Extra Edition. I'm Molly Wood and thank you for watching.
