Episode 7: 3D print your own iPhone case

Culture
This they got now is -- learn how to 3-D print your own iPhone case. Watch me get served by a robot equator of the future. And a tiny projector that's also a phone -- always on is on. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- On this week's show an amazingly cool DIY project. And some outstanding emails from you your drunken fools I love you guys. But first let's get to an on box. Inside this box we have the Samsung galaxy beam it's not even out yet we'll get to the -- part in a minute but we taped it on does so again have a proper -- boxing. -- remind you once again -- always worked better. Better -- sensors for opening boxes. -- -- Paper. And here -- go home galaxy and he Yuma and light up and share. Temelin -- box here. One thing you'll -- the right off the bat. Does the bumble bee motif with the yellow all around the edges -- also pretty big and heavy. There are some good reasons for that patient sort of be prepared for at least the vagueness. And the -- current let's run through some specs. -- galaxy name has a one gigahertz dual core processor and eight gigs of built in storage it has a four inch super Apple led display. A five megapixel camera with a flash and a one point three megapixel front facing camera and it ships with I am sorry to say Android gingerbread -- It does have a bigger battery 2000 Camilla asked to help with that projection although it's not as good as the RAZR Max which has a 3300 -- battery. It also has a micro SD card slot which is expendable up to 32 gigs. Now write about and I are probably thinking why would I buy that phone I mean it doesn't even ship with Ice Cream Sandwich and let's be honest those specs are kind of middle and plus the Samsung galaxy S three is out we'll -- here's the hook on this one. It's got a built in Pico projector. Get it -- it's a projector. The projector bulb puts out a brightness of fifteen ligaments it creates an NA HD image with a resolution of 640 by 360. And the image can be up to fifty inches it has various apps to control projection and playback. And something called -- beyond -- which lets you play any song -- still image for a specific duration. You can use this little phone to -- videos or slide shows or pictures onto a wall up to six feet away. -- surprisingly excited about this or at least I want is until I watched Samsung's collection of heart -- video showing you all the possibilities. I'm not as pretty as those people but I totally did this with kid pictures -- kinda. Whatever -- so my videos not as heart warming is Samsung's videos which by the way. We're not very heartwarming and all like you're not really pollen off -- face time thing in the music is annoying and all I can think about is how all those kids are too young to have kids and I just. I don't know that's not working but the -- Might be surprisingly cool. All vote. Samsung has not given us a US release date for this on right now. You can order an unlocked version for about 600 dollars and then routed to get a decent version of Android on it. But I think at that price he got to ask yourself if the -- Is really worth it. Head on over to cnet.com and reject the Google -- full review to find out because she's way -- are given I am. Switching gears from Android to iPhone Sharon vaknin is here this week to show us how to make your very own. 3-D printed iPhone case all you have to do is find a location with an industrial 3-D printer. No big deal but would you do it is super cool check -- this when she made for me. Actually as usual -- for second attempt was better. Hey guys I am here back at -- up to take advantage of their 3-D printers. Three printing isn't just for the super geeks and people making components -- cars you can use it to make every -- -- -- An iPhone case -- -- LC how to do just that. -- we're going to use a free program called auto task 123. Template from scratch I'm going to use one of RE premium loaded on this program so now I have to do is customize and -- -- game. I'll make it really personal so all I had -- my name to -- -- Actually I'll go ahead and add my handle sharing in the back and that lets change the tax. Okay so this looks good so far it but. Right now doesn't have any doubt that's not elevated sonic cut -- I think it cut it out just like this CNET case. So I'm going to -- is that -- -- -- tools. And since this is a 380 program I can view it in 3-D is so I'm going to change saying going there and how cool -- thought. Now what I want to do is cut this out. -- -- -- -- -- Right click okay and it now check it out I have share and back. Cut out of my case that's set pretty gets custody -- I know I can't bite off the shelf bad Apple or Wal-Mart or whenever. So look we're gonna go ahead and print it. I have to do a few things that to save it as an SQLI. -- Sentiment has -- here doesn't have a -- -- -- gene. That's the program that talks to the actual 3-D printer so what you're seeing here is -- -- farm I want to make sure that. The -- gets printed in the center of the platforms told me that I also want to scale it up just a little bit because the first time we printed this it actually was too small for my iphone's union scale it up. But what's great about it at three printing is so cheap -- secured tech shop that you can really tinker with it. Now we are going to go right to file won't make sure all -- settings are okay. Generate the G code it and this takes a couple of minutes. G code is an old school programming languages until -- machine exactly what to do. Okay the G coating is -- and I can put the file on the SD card to tell us to put it in the three new printer -- so we see events. In organs it -- let's put it in the project. All right now all you have to do is printed some going to select my my -- hands it. -- -- Thinking -- we're going to print it in this bright green color and that's what's hooked up to the machine right now it's actually -- about corn based plastic. There are other materials but -- for the maker pro works that. It's heating up -- -- going to take about an hour and a half to -- so we'll be back to check up on. -- This full of plastic is the holder -- -- back to exit and into the custard or weeks Streeter heats -- of classic and pushes it through its. Tiny hole. Your object is made one layer at a time -- Blues. And. -- it looks like we're at 93%. So it's almost done -- quarterly looks like an iPhone game. It's going thing going for about an hour but it will need ten more minutes until -- can kill us like crap and put it on my time. -- Now if you want one of these maker bot -- -- out home it's going to cost you about 2000 dollars out. With the tech -- -- -- about about 125. Dollars a month. It's all free it. Fred bell and that the cost of this school which is a material that's used to plant is about forty -- so altogether my iPhone diesel costs about a dollar program. That's pretty cheap. Okay now it's not just for making iPhone case says there are a lot of ways people are using 3-D printing. These are some of them more final way is likely -- is. They -- Darth Vader sculptures. This -- really need this on took about 84 hours of friends and was printed on -- a more advanced machine it's okay. Then is really -- people who use 3-D printing for prototyping. And so this college sophomore -- made. -- kite that converts wind into energy and he is three printing to create these components here. Okay I think by now Mac monkeys might be right so let's -- -- it is -- a little bit in the pot farm but not normal so we're just going to use. When it is guys -- it just nudge it off I am banner ads and tight fitted. -- -- -- Okay let's put it on. And its its -- -- Perfectly check it out. My own -- -- the -- -- an iPhone case now if you're dying to your hands on this and you don't have a three printer or access to one. You can use that produce a service like potter doesn't orders say plays dot com irate if you have any cool ideas for 3-D printing please -- -- -- -- -- back on Twitter. -- send us an email I'm always on at cnet.com. They share and OK I know that the maker -- 3-D printers to grand but don't think I don't have -- on my Amazon wishlists because I knew. And I look at -- -- into. We're gonna take a quick break when we come back I make a new friend. A robot later. And I for one welcome -- dinner. Right how are we here in 2012 and we do not have domesticated robots yet. Another useful in car manufacturing. And other industries but they're not doing the really important things like folding laundry and serving -- dinner. Well they weren't until now. This is may be one of my favorite robot demos ever. It's a robotics sushi waiter -- It's the creation of Silicon Valley start up willow garage they're dreaming -- how and why it will use robots in the future now. That was so Smart. It's really you know. Digital dexterity for -- Was -- your goal to. Create that future where -- from contestants actually occurring but our goal was to get robots out of factories from behind the cages and factories where they can help people. Whether that's having a bot to shoot pool -- one they can fetch you a beer from the fridge or have my personal favorite pulled your laundry. What is it that makes this robot do amazing things. Well it starts with how it sees the world. So this is about the PR two's head and then you see a lot of sensors there's a high resolution video camera a couple of stereo pairs. This is actually -- protester that works with the stereo to give you better 3-D images. And then -- can act is actually doing something very similar it's got uses infrared to protect the texture in the world and then use that text here to also get 3-D images -- And -- the PR twos are programmed to work autonomously they can also run -- game controller. This is amazing. I want. -- -- -- -- -- -- Turbo button but. Everybody backup. Now as cool as the PR two robots are hardware is only half the story here. Willow garage is also developing an operating system that they've open -- -- the hardware and its underlying software can work together to form the future of robotics. -- -- -- -- It's open source and so we've had about a 160. In -- visiting scholars from around the world come here for three to six months. And then come back home and they kind of take the software with them. So they can program the robot to do things like -- table -- -- a set of clean dishes and then yes. Even attempt to serve me sushi. -- that take about insulin like yes I did yes I did I did that. -- so what's preventing us from having a robot in every home. Probably the price tag is a pretty big factor. How much -- I Lewis vs 400000 dollars so it's expensive. Then of course there's the constant fear the robots will take over human -- but willow promised me otherwise. This robot is not gonna take over the world to drop the two by four in front of -- it's done for. See that's I like to hear builders are. And reassured that my place was now set for -- -- of sushi. What happened to -- You -- kind of see -- palace restaurant yesterday as -- -- is 35 minutes later so I have my people my -- -- in my slightly wilted food. But I can definitely imagine -- not too distant future where robots our servers and much more and I for one look forward to it. I no lawyer -- -- 400000. Dollars and know these robots will be cruising around houses anytime soon. But -- garage thinks that pricing will eventually do what it always does with electronics which means the future looks robotic. I -- -- for my favorite part of the show and I am not just saying that. It's the mailbag first up a clarification. We actually got an email from the fit -- folks and several users. Saying that fit it does indeed sync wirelessly. You may remember that was one of my big complaints about -- bit compared to fuel banned from a couple weeks ago. So I feel like that's partly -- here's the deal if you have the fit -- base station plugged into a computer. Benefits it can sync wirelessly with the base station if it's within fifteen feet of that. Not quite as good as I'd hoped I guess I should've said though the -- it doesn't sync wirelessly with the app. Although again both of them are very good devices that affect the fit it recently won a prize fight over at cnet.com -- your mileage may -- Speaking of variants I got this email from someone who also shows spit -- hi Maggie. Loved your segment on -- bit vs dual -- is I was thinking about getting one of those myself. After your review was all -- to get the fuel bands but I've gone with the fit it. Bottom line the -- -- hasn't Android app dual band doesn't. Also -- -- sinks with my fitness pal and other services love the show take care Chris. Thanks Carl it's always nice to have a devoted fan watching carefully. I love the spirit of this next email from Al -- -- starts by saying we want. I may. Need -- and writing this email. Do you totally missed the best thing about this and therefore gave the nineteen bracelet whenever an unfair victory. And then -- she goes into a really long correction about this thinking -- party addressed. And then says but my point and I do have one. Is that the best thing about the -- it is the social connectivity aspect I didn't exercise for two weeks because my husband lost his expected. And now that he has -- back there's no way I'm letting him get more steps than any day week year whatever. I don't care what the number of -- -- in -- -- salon is my number says I think you're asked to my husband. And to a lesser extent to sister and sister in law although they tend to be -- It's fostering the spirit of competition that makes a big big great and I -- thinking you'd be aware that since this is an Olympic year. For shame Molly Wood floor shame. I love a good -- and fitness related email. -- actually both of these products have their fans to be sure expect the -- that I think a little bit of a cult. If you are a member of that cult or any other cult or just have feedback on the show. Please email me always on at cnet.com you can also find me on FaceBook Twitter and Google+. That's it for this week everyone coming up next week on -- is on we torture test and iPhone four S and Sharon vaknin cuts of a perfectly good sim card for good reason. And -- get some skydiving training. That's all next week thanks for watching always on. The phone. -- -- farm power and didn't. This.
