-- -- -- -- I -- delivers real. And still. We're really excited to unveil a nexus here and we road test the new Samsung -- book -- and -- glare of the crown but he heard of it. I'm stars and -- people I was warming televised but rather they live and I try to get a -- you. I'm always on his -- time and. Hey everyone I'm Molly Wood and welcome -- always on the show where we take a look at the Texas part of your life and your future and this week in Google -- -- that Google delivered a little bit of -- Coming up in the show we're going to un -- the nexus seven and the nexus two but before that. Let's have a lightning round look at what Google announced and also the text he notes that redefined executive. -- -- my -- would really like it. Five yeah I got me. Wrong hello. Google IO has become a major events on the tech keynote theme and this year the company took things up several -- It's anything like paying for a developer has an idea -- my graduation gift was coming here first there were product announcements -- -- The next version of Android called jelly -- And nexus branded tablet the nexus seven to take on the Kindle fire and a new streaming media hub called the nexus you. And all of that happened before Sergey Brin ramp up on stage -- to the world in support guys wearing project glasses glasses. Who were jumping out of an airship -- wings system and parachuting onto the roof of building where I don't. And then. Series of my -- -- -- -- repelling down the buildings and delivered the glasses to the state. -- and then the next day Sergey did it again. Just why not. -- -- There is any doubt Google also announced that its Chrome browser will come to IOS and the company also gave away some five and a half million dollars in three duties and to all the attendees at the conference. -- between a skydiving Indian themed giveaways and nexus Q you do sometimes start to wonder Google has more money than sense. And then you wonder if they even care and then after that you start to wonder if you can. Is that really the product representation that you want to put out they are not even trying not to make it look like that Napster. We'll with the incrementally -- -- -- -- -- I'm -- do I love it wouldn't think all posts here Spiro. If you know anything about Google you know they're all about the free food -- they got like a whole little mini. Cafeteria down here with water and soda and then -- snack. -- assume that at some point there were jelly beans that are now gone but. I'm good it could they have -- What is not to love about free candy and Spiro ball dudes jumping out of -- -- -- BMX bikes at repelling down the -- of buildings. Google always -- up. But let's get back to the -- First seven. On boxing -- met the seven tablet this is Google's answer to Kindle fire and the Barnes & Noble but it is. A seven inch. Full fledged Android tablets made for Google play. Which could present some problems that we'll get to later but first let's get the -- out of the box which is no small feat. They have the thing. That there are way. Scared of the middle -- we'll talk about that later take them to look. Out of that thing. And in -- I don't really -- and it almost. He has monitored through -- boxing. -- -- So the tablet coming out it's actually quite a bit smaller than the Barnes & Noble -- feels a lot later they say it's about twelve ounces. That's roughly the weight of a can of soda. Now the back of our tablet. Is whites unfortunately that is just the developer version that was given out into the -- so when you get it it's going to be black then however. -- Bids the first tablet to run jelly bean Android four point one. -- -- nice high resolution 1280 by 800 HD screens a Quad Core tegra three processor which is great for gaming there's one gigabyte of ram compared to the Kindle -- 512 megabytes you can get either eight gigabytes or sixteen gigs of storage you get micro USB for charging hook ups and it comes with NFC or near field communication. Which means it can tap other and -- devices to share information wirelessly. There's also a one point two megapixel camera on the front for video conferencing I think the only thing holding it back probably is that Google -- library it is nothing compared to Amazon and then of course the net just has -- its own cult thing going on. But when it comes a seven inch tablets I gotta say. Think this guy is the new front runner all that said. We hear rumors that Amazon might introduce a new Kindle fire sometime this summer if they do I'm sure that they will bring the big -- but until then. Give this guy -- -- but wait that's not all from we have a bonus and Boston this week. This my friends is the new Google nexus -- or as I like to call it the Google what about. It is an Android streaming media device and we're gonna un box it for the first time. Right here by the -- this thing's heavy all of via comparisons to bowling ball seemed pretty accurate. And here. -- -- -- -- It is heavy like a bowling ball the weird top does actually turn and then when you plug it in their sleep these like menacing lengths they go around the end. Okay I'll stop making -- the bowling. -- thing and giving the specs. The nexus two is basically an Android based media hub -- like -- competitor to the Apple TV can stream music movies and TV shows to external speakers. It runs a version of Android four point oh and talks to your other Android devices the nexus -- only streams Google play content like music Google play movies TV and YouTube. So that limited selection problem is definitely huge here. It does have a built in amp so you can use it to power a set of speakers which Google -- separately. There's sixteen gigabytes of onboard Flash Memory and one gig of ram. It has a micro HDMI output for hooking up to a TV your cable box so there's an optical audio ports there's an ethernet Jack. And a micro USB port for what Google calls general hack ability. Whatever that means. It also has built in Wi-Fi Bluetooth and an FC so -- can talk to your NFC enabled phone or tablet. Now you control the nexus -- with your Android phone or tablet and Google also says that it's a social streaming media player so. I guess a bunch of people of Android phones could kind of collaborate on a playlist that kind of thing. -- the headline of this thing when all other Google TV devices and Apple TV cost 99 dollars this one. Is to 99 and it looks like a weird little bowling -- I mean I gotta say I think it's a little bit of a non starter can you -- vanity project. Right now quickly a word about un boxing. Some of you on YouTube have busted us a little bit saying that are un boxing is not -- un boxing. Because you don't -- like the UPS spots in the packing peanuts and with their protectors on top of the screen. So I thought I would solicit some feedback email me and always on cnet.com let me know if you think we should change the name. If you're fine like it is or if you really wants to get all the way down to the knives and the packing tape. I can't wait to hear from you. Now in addition to Android Google have another operating system. -- act and it's been a little slow to take off they have a new product out though the Samsung Chrome book. So this is -- 2012 Samsung Chrome book series 5550. Running its own operating system. It has a sixteen gigabyte solid state drive and Intel processors. It's pretty light weight about 3.2 pounds and twelve inch display it does have an ethernet port USB and SD card slot. It retails for -- 449 dollars with Wi-Fi only or 549 for Wi-Fi plus three G. But some people argued that a cloud based operating system where the whole interface feels like the browser. Might be a little too much too soon for your average computer user. So we decided for our road tests here on -- -- on to stage a little focus group. Love. You won't happen to him thanks. You know look. -- -- -- -- -- And he's -- camera. -- -- -- -- -- For all of YouTube. And then -- -- a year ago. -- -- Pyro and I'm Molly so what we're doing today is testing out the Samsung Chrome books which of these laptops for you and me -- -- the -- -- he heard of it. Now though so we'll do is take 1015 minutes to just do whatever you would do with a new laptop and then I'll come back in and ask some questions animals like -- are under. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- You can -- imagine we'll take place at standard and any other kind. One -- street hates. America and managed. The -- can remotely. That's pretty great patents -- can focus group testing out my work from home the Hispanic community twice -- -- network. It's pretty good -- and can actually need it to the Chrome store like to actually trying to -- -- that's as far as anybody got. The click of video game or something like achievement unlocked Chrome App Store. Actually key excuse we think he should get one -- give wanna take it home for it until it well apparently impending -- and -- Catholic school. And by the end hate to go there is wounds and seen since discovering that the coupon -- -- -- -- And I don't think it home. And somewhere somebody at Google -- -- -- -- -- So impatient that everyone whose command has been on FaceBook for the majority of the testing time. Bring -- about Chrome book FaceBook book. The -- and -- What do you think of the Chrome operating system. It's not that hasn't happened if port as our -- I tried to log into my H you know how. And -- cast turns to another screen. It seems like. Google shouldn't have a problem Gmail yet but okay yeah. Reminds me and I tell them that this -- connection itself. Channel shipments of -- Not sure how. Then netbook differentiates -- with something like guitar but rather than the keyboard doesn't seem like it would be useful to have a computer that. Kind of just hanging out online. -- This is 100% connectivity wherever you are and if you don't know how that then you know that's pretty paper -- -- entirely. It Florio and as usual quiet you know I can definitely feel like my parents using something like this and if I have ran into this. Our fantastic it is kind of stuff. Operating systems but what do we even. She wouldn't necessarily comfortable having all your information. Not stored on Google's servers that any assistance from an office and -- especially. It's a nice case and how much thinking and want to pay for -- device it kind of is like a tablet with keyboard. All I wanna see. Price passionately -- -- and yes turtle. It's a laptop prices tablet functionality. That -- them. I -- here are some of the lessons we learned from our Chrome book focused group. First people seem to like it best when they compare it to a tablet but with a keyboard. Second the cloud operating system is not -- hard for people to figure out -- we thought it might be. And third we don't really need to make a laptop. FaceBook. -- and everyone -- to take a quick break when we come back I go all right of -- -- curious with a bunch of tiny tiny flying helicopters stay tuned. You're never seen in the movie minority report where the police and in those -- -- to chase down Tom Cruise while he's hiding in the bathtub. Yet that's coming. That's swarming technology is in development and Silicon Valley but it gets even better these swarming robots can fly. -- -- -- -- Always nice -- Up up up. -- that's actually not supposed to happen. These flying robots which are being developed by scientists at Carnegie Mellon University are actually designed to help its search and rescue missions. The idea is -- and -- situations were very dangerous situations. You don't want people to go and so things like trailer fire on the whole the fire's progress when you have a nuclear reactor accident to one another edition wouldn't sign ability. Most sound far fetched of a sudden. Yeah a little bit but this kind of research is being done all over the world as scientists try to figure out how to make robots swarm autonomously. What could go wrong. When you're investigating the helicopter design did you actually have to sort of studied. How helicopters fly. None of us are actually and mechanical engineers. All -- so what we did was that we went to store and look for. So -- VoIP really data collected by. That's awesome. Now these robotic helicopters -- radios gyroscopes and compass is inside so they can sense objects around them and each other. Stay near daisy is a gyroscope to stimulates the rotation -- you don't need it comes to spinning out of control -- wanted to sit straight and check in a particular direction that's of the gyroscope -- Do you think I have -- -- -- -- a hot that is a very good question. Synchronized and targeted can listen -- that sounded kind of ominous. That's being slightly terrifying vision of tomorrow all of the video and -- and tax -- today. Police helicopter -- to work when I put them to the tests -- how many can you get going at once renowned. Like directing them to fly right into the palm of my hand so also accused the -- -- about -- music. The coming -- -- full got. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- We've taken the -- on the road and and it. In this -- -- -- helicopter about her going to make its. The technology still have a long way to go I mean what I -- development was pretty impressive. But the notion that -- bots will be able to autonomously smoothly into a burning building and eventually save lives. They've got a little work today but let's hope -- dramatic. So it -- say it's disposable but it's not really just before. Carnegie Mellon is not the only university to be developing this technology either the University of Pennsylvania has a set of sixteenth swarming drones can fly together in unison. The future is not just Google glasses people. And now. Right time for a dip into ye -- mailbag Carla had by far the most common response to our iPad torture test I mean. Other than all the people who said that they could not stand to watch it. Tell me about it. Currently writes good golly miss Molly called -- a drop test item on my third iPad in as many weeks. First it slid off the hood of my cars masked corner creek to blast. Then don't last year my hobbies allotted OBE that was trying to sting me up the iPad used went flying shattered. And last but I'm -- not least jumped right out of his hands and hit the pavement. I do not let him manhandled my iPad anymore but I do have to say you're dropped -- was not a true one -- -- iPad landed flat. Next time it makes of the corner gets a good jolt -- -- I know I know a lot of people want the iPad to land on the corner and frankly we're a little disappointed that it didn't break. It. We're thinking of some creative ways to maybe try to kill it I like that be -- thing -- -- gonna try that. I am moving on -- load Tivo -- well. I do not know why the -- on feed is not showing up in your Tivo menu I do know we have emailed Tivo and asked them to added. So maybe you can email -- also in the meantime though the RSS feed showing up on your screen right now so you can manually subscribed that way. I keep the feedback -- everybody we love email me always on at cnet.com you can find me on Twitter and FaceBook as Hollywood. And also over on Google+. That's at this week everyone next week on -- on our DIY maven Sharon vaknin returns. We torture tests aboard galaxy S three and we show -- cool high tech way to smoke. You may have seen -- version of that segment before but we have some new material you're not gonna wanna visit. That's all coming up next week thanks for watching -- month.
