Ep. 1563: A Nexus, Razr and a Lytro. It's the tech trifecta!

Culture
Today is Thursday October 20 2011 my name is Steven beach of I am grandson and I am Hollywood love and a buzz out loud at week Lee of CNET I don't -- indeterminate length of -- that 15163. Hey nice to see everyone here. Smiling smiling face the dollar -- so back in effect and we're super excited because we have in the house today cnet's. Semi -- general I'm a little out loud official General Counsel I'm gonna make it official. Mr. jail library. If you have a chat room -- the famous gill adds and its parent to whom we refer regularly whenever we find ourselves and illegal weed we lean on the men were like why don't we bring them on the show. Where there's no legal stories and all this week not just a hint that -- I'm just hit you low idea we have we've given -- various names just to be clear is not important -- -- net million. We -- himself up at any given in various titles there appears -- Thoughts and messages that's ideal career of rare -- do not represent those from CBS interactive sega's corporate yet there's no attorney client privilege. -- Legal advice if you're pursuing your own patent lawsuit against Samsung Apple or -- for a couple was so welcome my friends thank you cannot in the house -- That's an excellent -- -- and we do you actually have some legal Wii -- to discuss luckily we -- them. And will lot of others and it looks. And there'll be a legal angle and just about every story that's what we're open -- what extent is still at an hour after. At least -- that's like I could do that speak freely. And we have a cool interview coming up later in the show actually it's stay tuned for that we're going to be talking to -- guy -- basically starting the new social network. For video bloggers bringing local news home to you via video like that have not. Coming up a little later but first. First in the news inch touch. Finally after after about a weeklong delay final results on but after weeklong delay Samsung and Google got together in Hong Kong. To announce the galaxy nexus. With ice creams and -- otherwise known. As the worst kept secret in this often. Also otherwise known as the best competitor. Or the phone to get coming out in November. Really. The -- insane depending on who US -- mean this thing is this thing is loaded. Not only with ice cream sandwich but you know you have its dual core -- two gigahertz processor it has 1080. NF CE integration. Molly was a first a little bummed about its camera -- -- only five megapixels because you had said that. Well I think yeah I -- so. It does have a front facing camera and that about one point two -- -- by the big surprise to be -- the big flagship phone. Was a five megapixel camera and -- -- I understand that. It has -- the instant shutter technology that there's a lot of cameras stuff built into U. Ice cream sandwich and in fact -- in some side by side photos of the galaxy nexus camera with. Against the iPhone -- -- and very comparable in some cases it was even better I think that's fine I just think I was surprised by that because eight megapixel seems to be the new standard. And I wondered if it was a little bit of a trade off to that is a -- and despite. The fact that megapixels don't matter early eighties dude that's like the one speculate into this list and it to be -- not the fastest dual core processor around editor at sort of you know it is a dual core processor but it's not the top of the line. Model it's definitely not the single most tricked out piece of hardware you're gonna -- although -- -- and. But it's -- -- the potential iPhone four killer of the week. Of illegally alleluia confusion or I mean it's a four -- -- it has an FC any other to me when I look at the specs of the sky and I love its curved glass stinging. You know that's gonna be the new trend that we're gonna see moving forward Italian -- if there's a little bit and other than other then for me other than looking at this defining the camera I think this phone is. They -- me now on every level. You know. I'm just saying it's also wise it's also plain Jane Android which is awesome it is pure ice cream sandwich and ice cream -- To be honest though the hardware on this phone is -- -- it's very good right. But it's not likely set top of the line I think that really makes it does seem to be the site's content which operating system it's so much more refined than it has -- great it has a lot. Finally like a long long long overdue changes to the camera and -- gallery apps you'll get built in filters and two -- style. You'll get the actual camera button on the home screen. And then there's a ton of sort of new apps and features built a nice -- so much that that. Do indeed make it look pretty hot -- not thrilled about this and -- can tell -- no I don't know what it -- you know it is. I do notice. Yeah it's that I feel like there are fewer of those little -- compromises which I don't understand in their flagship phone -- this is your reference standard phone. That I don't understand why don't -- a top of the line processor they don't understand why you don't Max out the camera and the biggest drawback for me is that every video I've seen of it. The UI looks like people are sort of talk about -- -- are starting to talk about that and that's been a problem with Android. That's been an eye on every hundred for an action that's been an issue that when I play with them like it just -- it's not responsive it's. That little -- -- snapping this just isn't there. It's small it's subtle design it's yes and so subtle and it's also would be like white means a nit picky but it makes it makes a huge difference I read a great write up on somebody's blog that was basically just like under instant responsiveness is terrible. And outlet in as many words that -- Yes I'm Amy Allen the blogger Andy is not mincing words but He but He went through some of the -- early reviews -- looked like this is my next they how to align in their review that said. The UI seems to suffer from that sort of general sluggishness. That is character is characteristic of Android. And I just not like are you kidding. Is it and orders that all their hard work means just that no no hardware makers come up with the decent there's no way. -- it's a dual core processor unlike the iPhone four as it has one gig of internal ram like this phone it should be a screen. This is no reason. I just added that bummed me out so much and -- -- seriously I watch like. Ten videos -- just with my -- microphone or -- magnifying glass like. That pleases and inspecting the right now a lot of time -- -- An elephant up a -- -- I would wanna be on the other side and I understand has felt it interrogate people. It's really -- I mean. To be fair we will wait until we get an in house will definitely be trying and testing and I sent that I spent a lot -- herself an -- that -- Kent German and Napoleon -- please I'm begging you watch list. Watch for -- I will say spec -- it did completely -- the Portland Motorola RAZR -- -- to have its huge debut today at a bar that. Gingerbread and it's getting it was getting -- -- idle. -- eyesight hazard during early 2000. It would get -- intelligently to the other thing. That -- out about the got -- that they have liked to cater to -- -- waiting for the -- like. Was how -- is the release information. I know it's coming in November. The them no pricing. I was I don't know letting you know I guarantee you. And they are going into the holiday season with iPhone for us on or million African phones and for every -- -- me today. And they don't there isn't even a little pre order link. Jack if you knew when you're gonna release it you you tell the -- Celsius and guitarist with -- -- it was competitive -- definitely do all of the above is a sketch factor. -- that but it seems it's. About them in general talk about this and some other stories but. A lot of these companies are having trouble locking us down with the real official dates them in they wanna show us what's coming then you'd -- lose the momentum we've seen this all the way since. Palm had one of the big -- -- biggest light excite any launches and and CES. And then you see this cat mouse game it's coming it's coming there's no official dates and companies are. I don't know if they think it's okay but they're getting used the idea that a lot of these corporations are not giving us real -- in real prices until. Way after the fact I just think it patients up doing that -- -- -- I mean they they they really really want to and they really wanna stay ahead of the curve but they can't -- -- -- time and they have to show something in the title to their competitive and that they're still only game. But they still haven't I don't know what's better than an it's better come up with vapor -- and then -- you know sometime in the future -- It's art it's hard to say add another to get its amounts to raise the reverend thought that the one of those reasons and -- -- -- -- -- I have to say that give and a whole sort of history and -- -- and -- up till now and my sort of general feeling disappointment it makes me concerned. That its Google mechanics -- And that I don't have as much they're holding the keys to the car yeah -- anybody gonna do. It's ultimately the problem of not controlling everything and -- if they actually when they take over Motorola if they do -- exert control for Motorola which they say they're not going to -- than they should you maybe that'll help and at this point it's it's like Microsoft they have to deal with all its partners and have to rely on all these partners to have X cute as well that's a lot of links in the chain to break out of. Now so I know you're kind of -- got the RAZR but. Ellipsis there's two things about the RAZR that do you make it kind of unique and technical and other traders are cool -- place -- the it was is overshadowed it was overshadowed in in -- progress on lies in into the Atlantic other I want it if split. I love flip phone -- -- -- you know the RAZR was the iconic phone to have before the iPhone ever -- you -- really you had a lot of other phones a -- everyone had a -- it started off at like 600 boxes and when it first came out a flip phone and the -- and every other pioneered the decisive flip hang from which you -- has forever and. The best move ever like from. Could the show there's nothing more now that's about a month in a minute did you mean -- These actors around the world things to do you can -- and. The data this serious test -- -- You are right. To cool things straight -- -- still has dual core one point two gigahertz processor the -- -- the first Smartphone capable of streaming Netflix content in HD. The first -- to do that that's also the only other phone with Bluetooth four point oh. Apple's iPhone forest has it why do people care about Bluetooth -- four Plano. It's lower its more energy efficient lower power consumption and now it has this feature are pretty much the Bluetooth chip itself. Can send data intermittently over a period of time so much -- like Wi-Fi how we have these -- devices this new Bluetooth four point oh standard. Is really gonna be able to talk to smart appliances through your phone. Control TVs work out with your phones and add data to you know let's server or website you can see that instantly what your -- -- -- worked out so. Although Bluetooth -- -- -- has a way to go for adoption as a candidate to keep features that -- out the drag racer. Yes there is lovely. It's beautiful phone. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Which is excellent but not NFC. If you're excited about the -- clip depicting it seems like that is going to be a real nexus feature for that for the short term but the RAZR. And this exciting has -- release -- and -- slated date it will be available in early November. For 299 dollars you can start to pre order on October 27 you know -- I like about that. And Anthony -- also this kind of data it has Kevlar on it. -- -- glass on the front and and nano technology coding that will repel water that's because I. So you could swim with it no such authority put in your pocket it could save you from mobile -- That's a little that it not be taken and -- but I don't like an -- issued an idea. Elizabeth street in Zune deal is -- phone you know not a police are safety officer peninsula. -- -- -- -- -- can't -- under. -- -- That means that -- is that where -- -- Tumblr best fit skillful lawyer it's time to talk about the law a little bit. They galaxy -- this is very interest -- the Samsung actually. Came out and said. -- can -- the galaxy nexus was designed to bypass Apple patents that they should be a patent prove it should have a little Kepler commuting. Yeah it's. This is bad news for -- because this is this is usually what you do after you've actually lost the patent lawsuit is you you try to design around the patent. And they're doing it before hand because they've been getting our butts kicked up and down by Apple so it's it's it's a really bad sign for their what they believe is their chances of winning -- Yeah -- -- even at that date day -- rates of themselves that. Although we've tried to design has to go around Apple's -- it still doesn't mean that we're necessarily. We are not subject Apple still Salinas you're still trying to put injunctions on our products from being sold in certain countries. -- there's a bunch of Ph.D.s lawyers that are going to be. Looking at the designs and then deciding why it's still infringes which has its going to so Julia we talk about this in the chat room and you can chimed in a few times. With all this with all these patent battles. -- really is do these companies like Apple are the really that vague or is there. They have every right to go after these other companies and stop them well under the current system they they have every right to do it and and it's built that way and and when you're putting together -- your your putting the broadest. You know possible patent you can possibly get through the patent office and and the issues right now is that. It's fairly easy to -- fairly easy but it's very possible to get a broad patent because the patent office doesn't do on extensive prior art searches they don't do a whole lot of stuff there and then they leave it to be challenged later. And so and and that's the problem is that we all go into this in these patents it's not really knowing whether or not to patents can stand up. And whether or not you know -- your gonna be able to show infringement so their. -- if you want to fix it you'd you'd sort of do it on the front end of issuing patents but then patent -- and take forever. -- -- it's part of the game that is writing an entry in a patent and that as broad as possible while still being specific enough so that it can get approved totally. And and that and and they're being of these these patent lawyers that are our prosecutors they just they just specialists and I've been. I do patent work but I'm not a patent lawyer so I'm I'm the guy that. -- brings the -- lawyer in and then it has the translation to the jury. And they'll be like well this is clear is that -- -- There's no way. Anybody on Nigeria's got to understand that -- I am nowhere near understanding that so. It's it's crazy language and they all sort of understand it but it's it's -- -- expert -- -- -- to send -- an interesting article actually from Android police in response to that statement. Apparently -- lawyers are concerned that. -- it and under police -- -- -- probably eight. Frankly -- -- a very very stupid thing to say in some -- right if He really did say this is designed to be patent proof that it might suggest. It might suggest that. Samsung knew that its other products were infringing. Might also challenge Apple in some ways to take a closer look at the county -- are now one of Samsung's mobile executives on -- Hong has -- Patents were not a big part of some things discussion when they -- the galaxy nexus. Kerry. And then fed. At the time this patent infringement was not really -- -- issue and many said I don't know where that rumors from. Though He now they got his said that by the way it was the -- off. Yeah yeah that bad -- Boston not clear that council let her -- and -- you know he's trying to get the China. Walk as fine as a camp but He just He walked in all -- -- prompts and that's the -- very reason you do that. After you lose -- you never want to concede that never wanted to that I got to get around to patent -- you're you're you're saying -- I did the patent isn't ballot. CEO that if I don't -- doesn't damage and he's just -- -- this list of. Things like that accurately never say hours to really help Annapolis and economy at about this don't you classical or my -- -- you don't have a dog. I'm allergic to docs opened it it's gonna go down and get more and more extreme -- like it. There is. It's obviously -- But it does seem to be they case that in fact there's an article in e-commerce times today saying. What you decide which is something -- floundering. In the shadow of Apple's patent organized. That despite. All of their efforts to they've they have been recently trying to not despite Apple's and -- inspecting their own injunctions. In countries against various Apple products -- that has not worked. Although at least in one case recently in US federal proceedings -- -- -- Apple will have to do more to establish the validity of its patents. Before any final decision to not -- in the US this -- and I US can be made that that is a little in the fact that. Samsung is now flirting with injunctions in the United States that means that this is indeed has gone pretty far. Yeah they're they're they're they're working and that the problem that they have they're getting all these injunctions in other countries in the US it's it's a little bit tougher from what I understand of the case on -- Yahoo! admitted -- -- -- that they've been on the ropes I haven't seen very many articles where they've come up on top on one of these fights and any real way. Even in the US that judge ruled in favor Apple for the design -- -- right so they just that Apple you just need to prove this a little harder next time. -- -- at one point oh you're almost there yet. -- -- -- as the road -- to how to get there. Yeah it's very helpful when judges -- -- Galaxy Tab tablet has already been banned in Australian and German courts as we know -- on Thursday in federal court at one point. The judge held up one of each tablet in her hand to Galaxy Tab in the iPad two and asked the Samsung attorneys whether they can tell the difference. One replied that any distance of ten feet from the podium she could. I don't know why not I I I empathize with her because that He said it and got it wrong. I mean -- -- take the rocky like. They're saying it actually have better she is ever gonna say it's the one in the right she's an event like I'm allergic to tablets and compare it. You are dynamic glasses you are I mean there's all sorts of things to come up and I think -- -- the right thing is you know you know and -- hedges like -- at the right thing it's hard but it's not a -- just ask your honor power them up. And then not -- your honor would click on apartment in a different place in the -- -- -- you're assuming you a lot of these words are not Texas -- totally totally in Idaho again itself. Then -- yikes people in other gadget -- where I'm fairly certain. Or I would at least hope and pray that there is little exposure to annoying patent law. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- design for its radical new camera yesterday in San Francisco and guess who -- later. -- -- went on sale and guess who are pre pre order against through their particulate. Yeah so there regularly some clippings about this lecture and honored that we've added -- this CEO. Raining. In an in house here to talk about the product for about half an hour as they maybe three or four months ago but -- finally got to see it come. It's it's really cool technology it looks this is I have the -- Simonyi -- you can see the video here but in studio they give us this. Shots do you -- -- -- early version of the light show. It's for ages -- to give you Chomsky I could -- But I'm certainly what's free and I think you'd really like -- like that a -- well you know look here I don't like you like. Here here big mall just -- shell. Paula there's a light show in my pocket right now I'd like to -- it -- But the whole new ideas -- -- is so I don't let up until this is pretty neat so you whole the whole thing about this camera. Is it's. -- -- -- invoked -- right you don't have to focus on any subject you take the picture instantly instant shutter and then after the fact mall is getting red and hot and flustered as usual. You can click on the focus point whether it's the dinosaur or something -- -- -- Really cool contended -- pictures are almost like a one by one. Reach aspect ratio it's not want -- Full 3-D map of what every photograph -- you have forgotten through the announcement this is like. What type of bolts said that this was sort of the first technology in a while that we've -- legitimately excited about because it is new. It has the potential to re -- imaging it's like images three point oh because. It like megapixels over and make -- ray is a way that yes it chapters every it's true -- that -- captures all the available light. In an image ease its light field photographer He and so every image that it creates is basically a 3-D. Map of whatever you photographed and -- you can then. After the fact. Change the focus and image to whatever you want it to be. Yes so one of the things is that everyone -- rate. What how how what high resolution pictures are you getting like what. What what's the resolution of them and I talked to them in the -- look just like how original film was made when they moved from film on a piece of Paper you know adult film. So -- megapixels that there was no equivalent measurement of the image quality. Much like megapixels now can't -- necessarily translated. To mega raise. And right now this is an eleven -- -- a camera that's the you would assume that more mega -- means better image quality but you can't measure on a megapixel side now when you export these pictures and put on a TV. He did say they -- at least display you know in HD quality. And when you look at Sony's pictures you think. You know they -- look like around a one a two megapixel image from just like the overall visual -- quality of it but com. It's just. The cynic in me wonders if when they were coming up with -- meg re number -- and it's gotta be double digits because otherwise people think it's not. And apparently it has to sound out Victoria it's got an ornate until it was my -- -- like one megapixels Ebola. -- -- A one -- equal to one -- -- is just from all the way that images come across but it's it's fascinating next gen technology that -- you know. -- -- -- -- -- -- This we saw some shots of what the form -- look like in a shark puppet. And it looked long and this is you know because of the optics in the hardware inside -- it will you really realistically be able to miniaturized this down the line. So that we can see this. In cellphones in smaller cameras and right now they're not trying to license that there -- initial proof of concept -- -- in the future yeah they're probably licenses thing. But on He said as time goes on right it's gonna be more about the software that then emulates what some of its hardware does that southern and ideally be able to miniature resident will see it on my 23 years away from now but this product itself. -- -- this is the first of its kind of one of a kind. And -- new technology I was shocked at. Prices on the heels -- more I thought it varies so expensive and huge and it's that little you know -- Bigger than a flip camera and if they see how public misses its price its -- think it's fair to my -- -- -- -- it's priced to sell that's you know it's still impulse purchase. 399. Dollars for 300 for an eight. An eight gig storage model which they say holds about 350 -- seeking a little bit of math on image size I think it works out to meet -- like about a 22 meg. Image which is big you know like a -- a -- violent -- is what six megs. To -- -- Iraq file anywhere in AVO proprietary file format it into proprietary file format of the files -- pretty -- but 399 -- makes it extremely. Acquire herbal tablet you know people can really try it out and really actually -- with and they sent out pre order -- to everybody yesterday who had signed up. To get notified when it was available. I I can confessed officially a pre ordered once you -- this is him. To see this in action because he's did a real you sometimes you could look at -- picture like whatever but when you do the real. Time demo in person it's pretty it's pretty awesome your blown away this is this is new -- -- one other thing. It was a -- -- -- -- 01 other thing I was gonna talk about the product is. One -- that this is going there really how are you to capture the imagination of a consumer to really buy this product -- what's gonna make them all and be willing to spend it. The cool thing is in their software which is right now only Mac compatible but will be PC and Mac compatible by the time they launch and you have this ability to share the photo on FaceBook but what they've done is they've built. The post seen in FaceBook is built in -- five or flash compatible. You can actually interact with someone's picture on their FaceBook feed all click on the full plate that's could not -- and it's that is the killer and -- point of this. We didn't get a showed in the video but when I saw that I'm like are you guys kidding me like that's what's gonna make this a selling point for. For people. Mom and dad it's messing around with your pictures like that that's it's crazy -- error winner also -- -- by compatible they showed it on an iPad running through their website. On -- every platform it's gonna be compatible want to interact with these what they call living pictures let out it was fun I was X I was I genuinely algae stuff when -- -- this that's. But I'm genuinely Amazon's news is new is a -- I was also -- -- -- the Mac that because it's unusually weak because I've Macs obviously waiting for this for the next software. It works for me out of the scoop -- the very cool stuff so. And then grow quickly before we get a break just heads up a little -- that you will want to watch sixty minutes this Sunday this coming Sunday. Sixty -- we'll have an exclusive interview with Walter Isaacson who is the authorized biographer for Steve Jobs that -- is coming out next week. And Bluetooth and that they the book has been kept under it as is. Appropriate. Has been kept under X two cleanly. Tight -- there -- no review copies distributed. There's been no word about what's in this book and so the first kind of -- you're gonna -- from sixteen and will also have some of them. Out some clips from that interview on CNET TV -- -- Atlantic now. The best thing about this is the Steve Jobs gave Walter Isaacson pretty much full -- to. Put the interviews. Warts and all in the book so hopefully -- -- some sides. Good and bad of the things that you know confirm some of what we've heard or haven't heard about Steve -- that I'd be very very fast mean definitely through -- again and He appeared that. We did I -- down monster hard copy and or both user you have both both the one published a -- at the cover -- and but I have Steve next to another. And only comfort. Are gonna say great I wouldn't come back the big security holes with a series that's when met those Nokia windows phones are actually coming and Hulu says forget about it. He's getting good. -- Again and thanks for that Stephen from my ears are now -- That was about me. A little more unique EL LID that we had in the past please keep them coming. At a lower pitch that couldn't read out an island. -- -- -- -- -- Let's just saying thank you for calling. -- It's I love the headline on the sir -- is not -- bad theory. -- theory hysteria apparently there as security hole has been uncovered. In the Syrian -- assistant technology and the iPhone four -- and apparently. It will allow anyone. To use the phone to send emails and text messages and make calls. Even if the phone -- passcode -- -- excel the thing about this is this is one of those things where a company has a decision to either. The whole opt in or opt out -- leave this on by default and they were -- in love with the idea like everyone needs to use Syrian love Seri you can get. You can get access to personal information to when this phone is actually locked. And so there's a setting in your iPhone be on your settings are passed a lot we can turn allowing Syrian media access on the phones -- led by -- Apple set its own. I don't I do. Understand. That I wonder you know I I must have and clicked it to turn it off because when I. First -- it -- it was -- to told me I can't access it while the phones -- minute and then when I type in the code it just open the phone and it didn't continue on to Syria. I wonder if they just can't get there and -- wanna mess up the experience graduate I think that's probably got the default is is. There's -- -- -- that given the security concerns. It's true that if you're driving himself if you're you know I mean if you want to use Syrian all of it's glory it is annoying to have to type in the past reverse that is you know I can understand that the user experience is best of you can just access and your line. But it is a little bit of I mean you can't necessarily -- you can also get in contact and just ignorant -- you can also pretty much everything. You just can't call someone in -- in your phone though you can get -- -- government. -- allows -- you can yet but I want -- -- me on was that on world like a guided them to accept a new directions to somebody's office that's as I can't give you. That information without the Oscars -- Passcodes annoying for every. Use but. It is important Apple isn't art I mean actually if you have it then it security start out in the chat rooms it should just be a part of the initial -- -- -- process. Like you should get to choose that immediately if any asthma and. Or it should pop up -- the -- is you set a pass -- -- just say okay. -- going to allow you to bypass this like I just feel like. I've written a column about the sector in general Apple's. Standard operating procedures do not work when it comes to security they compromise user security they cannot continue to access. Two insist on experience overseas as -- it's hard on -- up to the guys. -- world need to get Syria. To recognize your voice and then you can now bypass the -- -- yeah that'd be a nice featureless analytics and awesome. Of us finds -- that it's just a -- Apple had a clear choice and could have chosen to implement theory securely. But instead they did they -- it's -- to mode which is more about impressing your body's been about securing your calendar -- And that's but it is under president I it is stolen you can ask her to talk dirty and says compost. But I'm -- any harm upon us. -- there are fighting between them as a part of the blog and of the Tumblr blog yeah. The stuff that services yes exactly real quickly we -- mention that Apple officially announced that the first weekend sales topped four million tech -- today was reporting that they had activated a million. Of those months edged -- -- Kennewick activated -- an activated one million made me wonder how many of those were in fact sold in two channel camera. Announced -- -- possibly a little. A little -- -- but the numbers. Microsoft. Both Steve Ballmer and Andy lees announced that Nokia would announce its windows phones at Nokia world and it sounds a little unclear about where and when they're gonna start rolling out. But does that sound familiar but Nokia world and a -- that one before. But Nokia world event next week in London -- up on October 26 children have a lot more news about that. It's such a proven strategy for. There really -- back via people Brian leave one more to the for the fun Alec and in Finland first year -- never do it. Rim had its Blackberry Defcon last week Research in Motion and not surprisingly. There were some apologies -- -- So an apology to the apology because He could apologize in person and this apology and rate -- -- more apologizing is. Because it made me remember those few of you had a Blackberry -- that last last week He couldn't get any email for -- eating. Well the problem here -- okay Dave -- did their apology but they could have made up for it here at Defcon which is like blackberries annual convention. Last year they shut off the playbook -- -- we know how that played out but at the time it was kind of exciting like some new hardware at the time. Here they announced to be BX which is their next operating system. But the problem with this is again. Okay there were there is no hardware that they showed -- to complement. This new -- and in fact there is no official date or time line when BBX was going to come out. Yeah that's that's money that seriously I'm sitting -- like dang that is working whatever I yeah I -- Whatever -- -- it's working I even though I mentally approve the dark He had said it's working -- -- working. Out what -- -- you guys make me get this -- yet. Yes. We are now is my old friends at CNET you guys now that I used to out work with CNET. Dealers out shall we say this for an interview actually I am totally about not doing it -- I think we can just go into effect yes yeah let's get -- -- On the planet right now -- -- that for the non live audience we have -- scarecrow with -- -- is according to his Wikipedia. An American entrepreneur producer and director and right now have -- to gonna -- today about this new project did blogger nation but first. Let's let's go back through your history with the -- totally used to work on the old -- when we're on the big TV. Yeah actually obviate. It's -- -- thought I was one of the found. Producers of CNET can -- back when Kevin Wendell is there is the executive producer and and wind baker was there is the supervising producers and I was the only New York guy I was sort of this loan. You know cowboy in New York Gates's that was the only person representing CNET at the time -- before a lot of -- came in and seeing all the sales and stuff. Ponds and has a lot of funny we got CNET on the map with a lot of interest in people back then I got to interview. Everyone from the head of -- to the editor in chief of news we. All the way that David -- And I'm back then you're right we work TV check out CNET. We are on NBC we -- on cable we actually shop for shows four different. Television network shows up CNET central and which is posted by Richard arkansans. So it was a blast that a great time it was really cool to be at CNET early on. And then I've fortunately went on to do you bunch of other things com producing watts but. The little sidebar story I was actually involved and to bringing cnet's -- small screen on I was the producer and the director of the first live webcast for CNET which isn't 1997. And add the PC expo and I saw you guys recently over -- dot CES I just started laughing to myself that now the and these guys you guys are like a spoiled brat. You got that big sat out at night lights at stayed -- lots of beautiful HD cameras. We got a closet back in 1996. With some like it out small digital video camera eyes and dot com. We were all using -- at that time stated the art digital video -- editing technology and we were. -- -- is doing the same thing you were very very small. I guerrilla style scallop spread of -- huge success and that's then went on to launch the us CNET video on demand. Strategy. And subsequently -- guys -- video on the site that acts out. -- -- -- and I can't say I'll I'll give you that that we have the better technology now but I'm pretty sure that Mac and you guys had like hair and makeup. And wardrobe looks really good if you think so -- now I heard mark guy I would have -- -- -- a lot Ryan Seacrest Edwards -- It's funny Ryan He resign He reserves -- -- -- that CNET was his first -- down out of for those listening to Ryan Seacrest you that -- -- Yet -- that's He came in and Brian was awesome to work with no wells we had back then which not many people remember which is Ron Reagan junior. Totally. And Ron Reagan junior is funny I'll tell yes. If I don't know how much time we have but I would love to take a quick Ron Reagan genius story if I can get up please please did note this are doing all this great CNET and -- -- here. -- It's our show it's yourself -- very well. So Roderic -- -- down shooting I forgot the piece was specifically but we're shooting a very important piece down in Washington DC dot com. You know -- basically. In -- copyright issues. And out Supreme Court was weighing in on decision. It was actually Canada a real journalistic story something that. I was very excited about and so being very young and naive -- time. I said oh great let's go to the go to the Supreme Court and do -- stand up there so we drove over to the Supreme Court. And there -- a whole bunch of press over this like continued area and I said. How -- must be over there with all those people looks like up. That's a bunch of you know animals forget that -- this -- urged Iran wants to go stand up the top -- -- and -- down in deer stand up. And that's how we're gonna do that he's like okay sure no problem was great sport about. So we got a camera hand held camera going there are ready to do it brought us the top of the steps. And fifteen like Secret Service guys out of nowhere just completely -- end and to. Pounced on him basically -- -- just like who are you doing you're not supposed to be here you can't be doing this. And so on and so forth and then. We're Berlet what do you mean we're just -- -- stand up. It's like you're supposed to be -- -- Are -- are right AME. Experience stops then that. Head of the Secret Service -- I guess the He. In. Supreme Court comes out you. -- that you. And I go oh hey how are you building identity -- well it's great to see again. It's like yeah sure let's see you it -- so what are you doing here is bound doing this stuff for CNET. -- how much time -- me. Tonight. Ron Reagan junior -- -- hack it in here right now it's obviously this guy was head of security for his dad when his father was present only so there we got we got the exclusive stand up because of Ron Reagan junior we got back in the van and drove away and -- this ballot while -- against. There's got no problem. Viral treatment that's are -- a -- -- -- so that's like that's been your deal is this on you know it seems like for a long time and I evolved into Israel participatory media role and that's been kind of your specialty tell us a little bit about that -- -- when you're doing now. Well you know and it our nation has been such a fun projects for me. I've been really fascinated. For years with this notion of Bob first person perspective -- storytelling and participatory media as He pointed out and did blogger nation is really. A unique. Opportunity because it's the first. Network of its kind where we enable ten different unique voices across the country to tell their first person perspective stories. And having a collaborative. Experience wish there audience on a major cable distributor hence being Comcast he's our partner. So. And that -- nation this is social TV network that tells. The first pursued this perspective stories of people places and things in their global markets. So we're really very much about localize content localized experiences. Of these individuals -- -- but -- up there on the screen out. Rock out in gentry all and skating. You know we went through quite manage and process just finding these individuals we didn't cast them for example like a normal television. Network -- channel what do we spent about three or four months and we looked at roughly. 4000. Candidates. And videos of candidates and after about four months now -- -- through about a hundred people and how those hundred people we then started to find. You know who would be available could be right for this good work well the other folks -- would be nice in this ecosystem. And organically. It just came together very nice -- saw in the -- Until we got scapegoat -- -- -- -- solar escape learning on the set -- Aaron it's the escape routes that so obvious. So -- -- -- -- -- -- -- see -- so that's that's the -- nation and in a -- Comcast has been a terrific partner. They. Look at this -- say. You know obviously an experiment. In a lot of ways it's -- news. Area for -- in terms story telling and I think. When you find people -- -- good storyteller as they get them and new platform environment to tell their stories and authentic and genuine manner. Given the infrastructure and support -- Com great things can happen and that's really what -- -- nation is about it's this private individuals who collectively. Share their stories -- another. As well as their audience and we look at those audiences more friends and followers and just straight up viewers and I'm really happy to have gotten launched and appreciate CNET support here and I've given us an opportunity to talk about it. -- -- marquee you know you've your -- intersection where you've dealt with mainstream media. Internet media -- of the viral social revolution and -- merging these two things together and even with -- -- -- you're doing. How how do you think the bigger studios are -- to -- -- really care and look at Internet media. As a viable. Option as a viable part of the entire media landscape because that's -- of one of those things where it's -- almost prove itself in your in the center of that. You know -- it's. A long. Long. -- -- you have to keep in mind when your. First -- live. Participatory media are. Live broadcasting on line back in 1996. With properties like -- -- in the to entry and basketball. It is really helped a lot about how. How do you do you this. And I was always an advocate of why are we gaining this what is it that we want -- accomplished now the how is no longer a problem you know you can start. Telling stories live from your mobile phone if you'd like and it's there's no technology. And com bring you from doing -- Also how is not so much an issue it's it's how you tell the story is more -- an -- as well as -- -- technologies. In terms of the the studios and major media networks off I think it's attrition over time as some of the folks that. You know keep in mind there's a lot of folks that are running media organizations. And when they came in television as the new -- right. And it -- years before television was adopted by quote unquote Hollywood. And if there's a funny story that. I heard yesterday at digital Hollywood. On how they used to promote movies which was. Yet there is television which is a great medium to promote movies and instead of using television to promote movies in your local market. They would operate its Charlton Heston could show up -- looks -- through the back yes. East -- were terrified. Other movie trailers aren't -- in the -- the trailer and it. Promotion on television because they were afraid of TV animal lives in the movie -- so now boards. As proven to be the opposite. -- situation and I think. The Internet and end delivery devices such as the screens that you see on web mobile and tablets. Are slowly but surely being -- so glad -- waited long -- -- answer is it's attrition. As sort of the older people go. Out of the business are the ones that don't adopt the new mediums. Disappear. All the the other folks that you understand that it's really all about telling great stories and it's an all media -- as opposed segmenting it off its parts. Will be in a position to really decent -- work. And I'm kind of before they go I'm really interested in this idea of that this new wave of talent right and and -- and ideas that. Authenticity taste makers is -- that comes up a lot but that. That what we're trying to find is that people are actually authentic as opposed to people who are necessarily trained. For -- television can you talk a little bit about how like the in some ways web distribution seems to break down the barriers between what we used to think of his talent. And requires a higher level of engagement and intelligence maybe than -- -- maybe. About -- I'm not stranded you know. Say anything about -- about -- I mean you look at what you guys do -- for a living right wait -- you guys you. -- -- it's a different form of talent right to be able to conduct an interview and to. Understand what's involved -- that to be a journalist is a certain set of skill -- right. To have you go out and be say a video blogger or telling these first person perspective feature -- May not be the type of storytelling that works for you there's very few people that can do say. Our movie and entrance and over two comedy right so it's -- genres of storytelling that is appropriate for different types talent. Com and what's great about the web or any time online medium. Is the simple fact that it's a two way indeed it's -- self publishing platform so those those folks are out there. But as a producer we still have to find folks that can deliver. For example -- on time. You know there is a certain level of professionalism when you -- -- hurt yourself from just someone who's doing as a fun hobby. It's being paid to do sell and doing in a professional environment so there are those considerations. That everyone has taken to -- So you can be the most authentic person in the world but still you need to be on schedule you still need to be able to work with other people to get things done -- Even the top -- -- out there. There's they have -- teen. Working with them in some way shape or form. You may not know that but there is team -- and an order for them to get to where they are. It it's a collaborative medium and that's one thing we all have to remember about what we do it's -- meaning everything from talent to the producers. Down to the engineer who makes you set target or the director photography -- makes you look good. Once you're on camera there's a whole different content. Approached even if you're a little flip plans to examine shooting and editing and doing all these things yourself which by the way a lot -- blockers work. Once we started getting this infrastructure -- place for them. -- video Scott tremendously better now what I mean by that -- we didn't force them to change stories. We want -- that's just still be down but we enable them. The tell the stories from more compelling manner all the way from editorials -- being able to help them with music selections and clearing. -- 200000 music. And a music selection cataloged so they can be more creative. And that type of infrastructure I think you're gonna see. More more out with companies like simply knew which is my company. You see it with a company like maker studio -- I think it's terrific in doing a lot of great work and really looming talent. And having them have a good working environments you tell great stories -- Great wolf thank you mark good luck -- and revenge. And you know be careful there's -- -- and you we should probably -- -- Let you get active paying attention. Is that -- -- there's dancers act cranes are running around. You know produces runner on -- is gonna vote. Party come on this behavior and ideas to the set of X-Factor and charitable and -- -- double byte. Do it. Ever since getting gingerbread -- had tons of general SMS failure error messages before gingerbread at random reboots that still happens sometimes and it would send text messages to unintended people even when it meets -- the recipient -- have the correct contact. Any dangerous all of these things -- -- the fact that I don't really get support calls for iPhone issues makes me want to switch. As soon as they let us put the iPhone -- -- iron play -- I'm making the leap and selling that animal I live it up orgy of the app and access software that is reliable. And also He says He won't be able to listen to our podcasts until Halloween because he's getting married this Saturday and he'll be on his honeymoon all this week right now he's -- -- right now. So congratulations -- then programming a great time and thank you -- For the heads up on dependable you're not the only ones coming so don't even know -- under. Hey guys and anyone else notice in the various hands on videos going around of the -- nexus how slow. The interface is to respond quite often I mean when people try to do complex things. You know my super fast LGG two X gingerbread is quite slow to respond to clicks and swipes compared to -- And phone. This -- an inherent. Android issue also when I type my usual speed or unlock an iPhone -- responds instantly with a very high frame rate. It seems -- can't keep up the centers visually on a lot certainly not smooth and typing tends to lag in speed up. Does somebody on the stores any opinions -- sites. Of the -- That's so funny because when we read the email and -- as which server -- the next tab. Where I had the story -- that I mentioned earlier in the show with the title and her -- touch responsiveness is terrible. They there's an interview there was -- this article links to -- video actually have an iPhone 3GS. Vs a nexus S. But has character -- the hundred U -- since its inception is still there which is not a heartening thing to hear. When you're talking about a super powered dual core device like the galaxy nexus not a Harding came here and actually more with the author of this blog post He says that what that really is is totally F thing unacceptable that there's. Sometimes megahertz don't matter anyway yes tell me you're not alone. In noticing -- like -- with their Blackberry. CNET issue comes -- -- are limited to 8300. Nothing's perfect in Allen and has -- -- little help with it. And jedi -- and says I was getting severe battery drain on my iPhone four acts which when -- -- this and -- until racist and intent. I have and I've been the scene reports -- -- pretty common though it seems to be like Twitter is talking about bad battery might mean -- like two or three ports are the idea. So you pick it -- says. I think I've discovered what I believed to be the solution if you've been using theory go into the settings up. Under general and theory -- -- to speak to off. I did this yesterday and then -- math on forest constantly with Nvidia's video streaming and -- access and I reached eight hours double the time I was getting with that -- setting on. I think that setting with constantly checking to see if I had the phone raise to my ear to speak this -- Syria is still on without setting switched to off but I just have to hold on the home button to speak to her which is what I was doing -- That I hope this -- others with -- on forest has to I didn't know. And I -- than them and they were saying earlier that the holding your phone ever made sense to -- and national. -- when you touch series -- like. Whole in premier -- -- and. Especially since some of the responses are taxed -- -- everything back to its its interesting though great I mean there'll be some sort of software update but. Typically I've noticed when I first get a phone the first two weeks -- fiddling with -- so much and I know some people say they're leaving it. -- there you kind of fiddle to phone a lot more the first few weeks and your battery life does drain and then after you -- get passed the novelty of it. It starts to be like okay you're normal near normal activity -- I've seen that to be a trend here right. But in the worked that the I think it's I was 52 is -- when I upgraded my wife -- -- the first time to restore because it was just draining energy plug in a take it off and it die. It.
