Ep. 1359: There's a Turkish academic born every day

Culture
Today is Monday -- everybody back. -- -- -- Opera itself and Hollywood welcome you -- out loud podcast and it permanently. Is that the thirteen hundred if united happy cyber -- everybody had said Monday. Out -- that keep an obvious marketing. The deals are not as good as the Black Friday deals on there I looked around really hired and I think it's kind of I think this is the that the life has been put -- -- -- -- like yet that was always caveat and then now there's roughly one but -- -- -- like all week long you know. But I hope you got there all following link and my little man loved it from -- immediately following Amazon deal and -- all beautiful. You have got to be -- Google -- stuff out there and apparently there's a glut and stand mixers. Because they've had those things like 40% -- the day after day after day. It kept me at real life and -- -- And -- -- -- right next to the nice that's like a hundred bucks of the that's regularly 180 bucks and I've been like on the virgin did like the nice and -- cleanup funds in a kickback Amazon stopped at the need double and the you know and I that it never were thank you really only need humans. Believe that the again butcher knives and a really -- small -- that means you need a steak -- to them if statement. A ten minute study didn't hold that it accidentally eat meat and butter knife for you -- the -- to the betterment you're putting you like for cooking. I bet I know what -- need to stop that stop the help people that might have not been able to get access to cyber Monday. Comcast outage hits. The Boston area some of the Washington DC area last night it kind of trickled into this morning and some of the East Coast cities it looks like Comcast did say that they did restore service to most areas but we're hearing that Austin might still be -- Yeah I think often it's sounds like was the best are the worst hit area and then Peter McCarron told -- that still down there and -- lastly and literally the last update from Comcast will people really -- and Comcast's frank right about now. Has Comcast cares was. Engineers is still working this is less than five seconds ago in fact apparently be a tweet deck. No effect fifteen hours ago Comcast will -- engineers still working to resolve and personally do not have an ETA. Where the issue at -- time. Yes so Washington DC Baltimore affected but currently looks like Austin might still beats Alex people crime that is a that is that -- again. At least you hopefully and apparently that all of your online shopping. On Black Friday because apparently although in store sales were down a little bit or flat. Online shopping was up 9% versus a year ago up to 648. Million dollars and -- also Thanksgiving Day itself. And this is actually makes sense because all of this your system in the right -- Friday and Friday deals. Or start like three days before Black Friday that -- that there were amazing -- early on there -- big deal on Thanksgiving Day and then and they like every time I look at the pictures. You know target whenever like -- the of people on the right waiting to happen -- dynamic. Cool would breaking -- Alec ads and in my -- almost people my brother would literally sitting next the elegant across the way on the couch and only Canadian and Amazon -- no reason. And that -- -- -- president where really that we're really thicker than an hour with. You know I did all my online topping it all went like fresh copy I didn't -- into a single -- this weekend no idea all I actually -- at all and Amazon I was a little kind -- gotta -- and I backed by. Really worth -- 150 dollar netbook like -- -- serious how now in India so if you wanna talk about online retailers Amazon. One the Black Friday online raise their increase in or unique -- Was a presenting -- when he 5% Wal-Mart lost 8%. Target went up nine and best buy was 1%. Makes a lot of sense actually because -- two main deal pushers that I was hearing about a talking about a lot last week before Thanksgiving were Amazon and target dart hadn't. Unbelievable deals -- the want to have that like 260 dollar TV each. They -- haven't them -- raise a deal. So you can use and also over the weekend huge diplomatic embarrassment to me via Wiki -- there was a massive cable leak. A cache of a quarter million confidential American diplomatic cables Muslim for the past three years. Were posted. On Wiki -- revealing. In some cases some pretty -- if it sounds like government information and and and secret. In senator diplomats that sat in on different foreign exchanges between it leaders and diplomats they're essentially their personal accounts. Were -- things ranging from. What to do about prisoners in Guantanamo Bay like how to negotiate the release -- -- with other countries know I'm also there is other believe it was the -- Libya. He came into the country -- the united emirates with 52 million dollars of cash on him. Whoa why and that they actually don't report that basically one of these cables docking and that -- day. Look past it. Right -- the outside Afghanistan's vice president let me -- that entered the united emirates last year. With 52 million dollars in cash they thought that -- -- that's a significant amount. Normally they woodland Indians have kind of in only look into it but they said -- -- to be allowed to keep it without revealing the money's origin or destination. And I'm sure analysis -- and here I'll filed a bunch of -- Or -- -- -- or one -- with other politicians a little bit and we are interesting but one of the biggest things that came out of as the fact that the attack on Google was linked to China. -- was officially going to Tenet was pretty amazing it's the US embassy in Beijing was apparently told by an unidentified -- contact -- China's Politburo. Directed the intrusion into Google's computer systems. Which is some pretty serious -- And -- that's what it had been kind of -- before and but there is no official and it's. Clearly the cables released show that that was the case the government US government. Was staunchly behind Google during that time we didn't know if it was ten -- -- -- and it's not -- right it's not us but clearly was. This is it really is an unbelievable release of information apparently -- with 251287. Cables. Many are unclassified it's just attempting need to run across that often under marked top secret. But 111000 are classified as secret. And 9000 are labeled no porn which is shorthand for material that's considered too delicate to be shared with any foreign government. 4000 of them are designated both secret and no. It's pretty. It's pretty high level secret -- -- and it is of obviously touched off a huge debate about. That the wisdom you know the legality all of that the White House and we condemn it in the strongest terms. I don't know I don't know -- let you know you know it is intriguing to see some of the things -- But at the same time when the -- potentially hurt -- -- with other countries. -- actually you know that some of these cables talk about how or leaders view other foreign leaders with their kind of their raw emotional. You know observations and feelings about them you go down the line you have any deliberations or you know -- -- remember that stuff. When they're sitting face that they are absolutely and it looked at each other the poker face and then also and you find out about -- these cables were basically they're talking smack behind their back right after the meeting. -- totally the American ambassador -- -- reported Lester that Eritrean officials are ignorant or lighting. In a hunt there had been one of -- a lot of that the Libyan leader runaway talked about his senior Ukrainian nurse described as a voluptuous blonde. And then it's that the kind of thing where you know it the government knows I'm kind of a weekly basis that China -- directly attack against Google's server -- you know every parent knows that but -- that there. In black and right in white the government may be becomes obligated to do something about it and -- -- -- is this the slow road to war because there's now too much information they confirmed. Mean there is you know. It's always a bit like the sunshine -- is better and it's it's good to know as much -- you can -- up there are reasons. -- we -- with -- also acquired documents or cable that. Had it officials' names that they did not release yet because they're working on editing the content writes about a won't reveal like the fact -- you have to do that -- the one released the public. I'm not -- sure. I really -- agreement that. The I'm not mentioned that this is a good idea I mean I think you know a raw of -- I think diplomacy works because. And frankly society works because you don't say everything -- into you know you don't tell people is other than you -- that. -- on my hair when you think that you don't tell the third party and at I would never say anything -- out of the big. Hit I wanna keep our relationship impact of that to get things the third party doesn't need to know what the first few parties think about it like there's some. Keeping things in behind closed doors there's something to be set about that I think you can take it too far but you know c'mon this is how. You just don't you just don't you just don't -- damn thing that comes into your head because otherwise the world falls apart -- thanks a lot acutely. Also the Internet is about the -- part because Homeland Security apparently just because they felt like it like there's. Some sort of law that would support this. Moving its way through congress but as far as I knew it had not been confirmed nevertheless. The US government launched a major crackdown -- online copyright infringement and seized eighty to I believed. Web domains web site domains that they said were links to illegal file sharing and counterfeit goods. Yet -- the trick is that if you know the actual IP address. And type it into your address bar you can still essentially get to these sites -- they just sit down the ability to get them to their domain name. -- will Molly was referring to as a maybe a week ago we were talking about this this combatting online infringement and counterfeit act. And it was approved. To be pushed. -- -- to be voted on but it hasn't officially been pushed through as law -- so. There -- clearly acting on this trying to lock -- and they're trying to lock down any of the -- counterfeit illegal file sharing sites. Before this lighting goes in a place. Well and it is that it is -- to really dangerous precedent to meet that this -- sort of like the worst example of intellectual property hysteria. Potentially absolutely breaking the entire Internet I mean it's just unbelievable and then the weird thing about it is -- So -- Homeland Security but it was the immigration and customs enforcement chief who announced it I think. And take to the press to talk about American business being under assault. From counterfeiters and pirates -- factored has a pretty good takedown. Take. -- part -- down of his statement and also some pretty serious questions which is like. Under what legal mandate as a group that's supposed to be focusing on immigration and customs getting involved and -- man website and why is it's a Homeland Security issue and why isn't there any. Due process here and how is this not a violation of free speech to say. You know what we we believe that at least some of the products -- -- website -- infringing so we're going to shut down. The the expression. I mean it's pretty remarkable and by the way has anybody been able to show substantial evidence because it's my understanding that that. Even the government accounting office. Has been able to fairly easily take apart they are double A -- -- MP double -- claims of financial harm as a result of piracy and they you know what you actually don't have any proof of of significant losses of the types that you have so register the name. -- -- -- The language of the act is also are really great so it says on the they have the rights the website community -- -- it has no. And -- -- -- -- demonstrable commercially significant purpose or use other than offering or providing access. Unauthorized copies of copyright works now we say offering are providing access button that doesn't even necessarily mean you are the host of that site right you're pretty senior John Madden oh yeah exactly who you're -- -- that are just. Kind of like ideally to lead the very indirectly. To the language is so broad. That it does make you wonder how far they're gonna push this. Well and considering how far they have been willing to go so aren't things that were secretly written into active before the world got -- have hold -- and the fact that they are apparently willing to. Start. Dismantling the fabric of the Internet and -- of ideas of thing they're gonna go pretty far and I'm not -- comfortable with. In news though about actual pirates lol you know people who -- -- carried community in is about the pirate bay a Swedish appeals court has upheld the copyright convictions of three of the or founders of the pirate day. And said that not only would they not overturn. Their convictions but there now they're gonna have to pay more money. They gonna have to pay more money and of their -- will be less time. But essentially was -- original damages were at three million Swedish kronor which is about four point two million dollars. They upped the damages to another sixteen -- -- so -- and another two million dollars they have to have the pay. The that was -- the banner but here's that is an example of you know. The law Writely is never actually prosecuted under existing law as opposed to the breaking the Internet to get that he just saint. -- -- But but but I'm seriously upset about -- like the idea that they can take down domains yet. At basically at the behest of companies I -- the original -- of the domain names were announced. At Disney. Like tell me that's not African -- you know. Well oh I'm sorry are you basically is our government now private security firm for companies to haven't been able to -- into the digital age and -- one. That's nice that they got that copier at life and another seven years to protect might even do real well -- Privatize homeland security and the -- -- -- continuing getting a warning or like sea surges you know cease -- operations they were just taken them up. It's as though they were all that is some police state. People believe -- And we're -- curriculum breaking compound growth again when we come back -- whether Microsoft is preparing to compete with Netflix and whether Google's just kind of broken. Molly -- and practically inviting you to join us for the 2010 edition of cnet's holiday help desk that happens every Monday at 1 PM Pacific 4 PM eastern starting November 22. It's where we make you look like a brilliant tech gift giver as we take your live calls and we feel your emails in fact -- -- Send us an email right now holiday helped -- at cnet.com and all with the rest of cnet's editors will point you to the right product at the right -- Holiday help desk Mondays at 1 PM Pacific time starting November 22 at cnet.com slash life. Look it up about sellout everybody is Microsoft. Preparing to compete with Netflix. So from Reuters citing two anonymous sources report is that. Microsoft is now talking with more additional media companies about -- is -- TV networks and pumping them in through their Xbox platform which -- -- in the US has sold over 45 million boxes there. Everywhere they're looking to talk to channels such as HBO or showtime. Or using an Xbox to authenticate existing cable subscribers to have access. To their shows over and an interactive platform much like the ESP -- if anyone has even remotely looked or -- that thing it's awesome. -- and this is really interesting too because Annie I think anybody with a kid good connection to the media companies at this point is an idiot not to be building an app like competitor to Netflix has just. -- on -- away with the market. And Microsoft has been talking about IP TV for ten years. If not longer thought it their long over due to get into that game and a serious way and -- -- they started unit direct path that we already know with the media. Power house. -- -- -- One thing that has working in its favor is that keep people on Xbox Live service already paid at fifty dollar fee which is recently raised to sixty dollars -- So if you think about it those networks and because Microsoft has been so active in pursuing partnerships they already have a revenue stream they don't. Have to really charge people more they've already kind of added that ten -- dollar on -- what they already offered service -- and that. Could help cover those coffee and a forty by milling user base I think. Twenty million of those users are active -- Xbox Live subscribers. So the labels or the networks are more willing to work with them because they know they're gonna get a revenue stream from a very -- already built -- And as we -- like it or not Microsoft has been very aggressive about their -- and then their content lockdown strategy so it I think -- content is probably considered a trusted source. You know much more so than. Google for example it simply -- the table in the way that -- -- -- comfortable so it this seems. Pretty likely to me it wasn't there also that thing I can remember I was in on the show but there is a story about how -- 40% of people don't even use the Xbox for gaming via. It was there you -- BC streaming constantly Netflix and pandora via PayPal that our last week another because the Xbox is really good media planner. But not yet -- really get media generally immediate and organize it I mean really it's true and why not I mean why why. Like if you think about it -- is potentially pretty scary for them like recorder -- even if you think about it wouldn't you want your media that -- all your streaming TV. Device he also to be. The game about asked -- conflict that game that's not that that's really one of the reasons because I'm a gamer I don't at a haven't purchased any of the road is their boxes because sure that you offer some other services but. At -- the day -- have most Amish you know Netflix -- the key killer app right now via. -- really another ignorant and obliterate -- in this. One they're not going to enter -- like fighting that to the death threat that's one of those like philosophical thing they will not yet that's the best available if -- -- by -- HD dvd you're an out there and -- I'm sorry the air about her but it's not because that is still the one thing -- -- PS3 is also a multimedia powerhouse meeting on an all of the same way as but it all of that and a pretty moderately. The thing -- gloves are at least put out a -- and I know that -- her. -- dvd and it's time. You don't have. Really interesting story in the New York Times and this -- -- about this merchants. Who is whether the -- -- -- -- my eyes dot com. Clinking glasses three guys sunglasses eyeglasses retailer online. Who talked about know how he has been able to actually increase and improve his business. As a result of negative comments. About his company lanky -- -- -- partly that -- get all these negative comments and then that has proven to be like amazing. It Google's U. -- basically because he's getting hit some more activity on his site it's populate -- using the Google algorithm to pump his store higher than others that. Might be perfectly the first in fact -- a document. His interactions with the customer who basically purchased a pair of sunglasses. He then said oh we don't have that -- why don't you get a different brand. Even though the classes you wanna like 357 dollars or something like -- She said no I want this is like well I'm going to sing -- this other lot these other pairs of glasses anyways again like night's argument they charge her card for the shipping in the -- and the glasses. And then -- BC says like mystery blob of all he act. Outright panic -- that are -- and then she writes are little comments on his review under review for the core my eyes and look he gets to publish the M Barth asked for. Via and they they found that apparently when they did a shopping and because you -- -- invade bank they. Google ranks the stuff I relevancy and -- they're like a ton of comments on the site even though it's a low rating. They were -- at some point they were showing up at least on the first page of shopping results and Google products -- Now though they're saying that that it's no longer ranking and it appears to be removed from Google product or because -- the story maybe didn't. Because of the story but it does make you wonder like. Is that at -- kind of a fly in community certainly -- -- version of Google bombing like it the fly in the FTL algorithm which everybody lives in the eyes by. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- It turns out any public is good publicity the old axiom rings true yeah I mean he literally was not. It wasn't like he was an SCO. Search engine optimization that's who -- around yet again guru who knew how to break -- you just like hey I just want people to interact and either leaving feedback good -- bad so that. I can get more -- via. It's interesting and then they point out in this that the search engine land has a really good breakdown and one of the things they say. Is that you don't necessarily want people to. Determine the good sentiment versus -- -- and web rankings for example of that article -- that if -- -- a lot of people -- Obama and you decide to -- -- love -- -- But you might now be able to find the White House. You know because they're making this place a light reading it that so they've gotten it and its products through teaches at least be able to search by. Like filter right raking -- anyways they -- the good read the security. And it also do not check out -- know you're gonna see it you can see the posts on somebody's Wallin of those. Like it here and -- and where you can see -- feed your profile. Today that that tool of every like want to meet it but stuck her watcher. -- -- -- -- -- -- The long promised app that lets you see -- -- your profile is spreading around it but in -- is still hope it has always been hoped. And it just and in tears. IE a -- But if you don't do males do it it's clear our island -- to look beyond if you really wanna know you don't at all. If it's not it's not you wanted to make the thing and pretty much never it never it's the weird guy that the friend of the friends it took the. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Sprint and clear wire are going to deliver -- -- -- Angeles Ohio Miami and Washington DC and they promised also San Francisco. By December 28. Who -- -- -- -- For -- legal all -- and they're also the connect is. I guess performing better than expected in Japan from its first two days of sales they're able to move 26. The housing units now here in the US they sold one million in ten days. I don't know if that's what they were expecting you know Xbox is not as popular in Japan but. My question was where do these people finding speaks. To youth can -- when their kitchen is their bedroom is their bathroom. Athletic also -- 96000. This is saying I don't know. Eighteen. FT the FTC. Though our TV if that will run on rechargeable battery -- charitable batteries anything -- it. If you can carry them around places so I would check this out something -- -- about it now there's something awesome it. According to this article it lasts for two dollars and -- are now that is what they made the jump in but still I mean and that's probably your rhetoric about there he is pregnant last month but think how often the republic party I think it's off getting it put it in the back. Artery can move on into the room is there you can take it delegating. Maligned no known for pregame whom. But then you'd have dial oh yeah you could plug in -- -- -- released the antenna no means mean and mean. I -- how heavy these things are active and Stevie obviously not. And finally there's the and -- light -- pattern like apnea and technical -- musical idea though. But you get it we're really where about it in the Atlanta and so this -- let's just move right on the ninth. Pretty hair close -- -- this. Prepare for the friction singularity. Okay this began headline you didn't know beat -- up and right. Not -- cannot flashed up -- morning -- an account and and in my -- the -- aging three burst in mice for. You. Researchers at Harvard Medical School quotes. Turn to -- feeble old mice into healthy animals by regenerating their aged the bodies agent that there aged but what. The singularity is here much this is you know what mark my words this is -- the zombie apocalypse -- First zombie mice -- bootleg nodding and again at step one yet step one -- wow. While it's Benjamin -- nine. The move. Well -- it -- said it was they weren't expecting it by the way. They didn't think that it was gonna happen Ronald the -- led the study was published in the journal nature of the anti aging. Therapy led to you not any slowing down or stabilization of the aging process which is what they thought right that they would be able to just -- -- a little bit. -- -- What we thought was a dramatic reversal. And that was unexpected. Well the roof -- -- -- Xen until armories are helpless and narrator telomerase. And -- levels alone -- and I. I'm gonna guess that's written going to be your own an led to the repair damaged tissues and reverse the signs of -- repair. Of damaged tissues. -- -- The sign of aid in agent. Agent the goal for human tissue -- -- would be to remove finance themselves out compensate for the deleterious effect they have on tissue and organs. They did say though David Kipling who studies eighteen -- university and although this is a fascinating study it must be remembered that mice are not little men. -- thanks for reminding me about an atmosphere to think. -- whatever -- good -- what ever. Reality check this is either at the beginning of the singularity in -- -- we can limit line -- we want to an -- or. The precursor to the zombie apocalypse. One of -- like Botox is just like last for a few days and -- go back to old mouse. President you know there right now the -- like an it's like if they call -- announcements like among -- -- other. IA got on the waiting for right now they just trying to make is that it doesn't last forever thing you have to keep getting it and then the market the result is that there's bring you -- like spring chickens right now. Get back to me in a month I don't know how my aging mice are doing the -- TV content at the high tech Dorian Gray and. Vivid and seriously -- -- real product -- repeated injections and I'm saying it on -- at least the next gen Botox. It along with going to be elements of -- up pretty much of research on everything else in the world to stop. To the all the human like way. Eating rivers in. And you make that happen for me I think they've been testing this on Sylvester Stallone you know -- -- -- -- them anymore. Can you say less than an anti aging timber -- use it looks better now on the -- -- -- he was younger and how small. Pretty -- even have the neck wrinkles and are usually dead giveaway. And -- -- didn't even have -- -- like Madonna -- -- element. I we're tourism of the show we are at -- and happy and they didn't. A Cambridge computer has crunched -- nearly 300 million historical facts and and identified and I love -- The most boring game history that the -- a I love the -- pilots the most boring day in history was apparently. April 11 1954. In which as -- 777 put that on Slashdot. Absolutely nothing happened that is unless you count the most boring -- in the world happening. And it. Wow happened bill and I guess the reason why this is an. You -- how often it is Gaza since 19100 by the way there may have been more -- -- boring days before 19100. But it was the most objectively. As determined by the computer dull day. From the nineteen -- On that day that I mean there were things that -- doing very boring things in general election was held in Belgium they got a Turkish academic was born at a K while that's. There's probably -- Turkish academic -- every day RA. And all that athletic footballer called Jack shuffled off -- -- and shuffle -- on. That's a pretty awesome name apart from that nothing much happens if that sounds like the most boring days and aren't couple months. -- Obama I really. And you can tell us the road and we have no -- no quick -- today they were all like in a really long in the -- -- you know I think they're making. But -- Tallahassee that I think one of the scarier aspects of the Wiki leaks -- this weekend is Washington's response. I was watching the Sunday talk shows and every connect congressional leader but that it knew that new laws may be needed to go after -- -- and that should be -- People like Wiki -- are -- politicians into writing -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Yeah also the fact is that it was leaked by -- So what does it of one of the officers internally. Yet in them so many come up with a bunch of news and candidates you like it's the same as the overreaction to terrorism like. When you start to write new laws to combat the thing that happened there almost always bad and poorly thought out and have really bad and and. Also and we it with you leaks that release to the press the press Alex that did run with the story they had to sign. Like Andy with them via the New York Times and that it was being released gradually and under Indian and. All right buzz -- now there's a way to protest those intrusive. TS AX ray scanners -- -- -- -- Fourth Amendment metallic ink printed under shirts and under re use. The take this guy is and to reduce underrated is he it's like that so often messages to those TSA agents but just wanna. Read all in your chances like the Fourth Amendment right there on your junk Eden which in case you get governor added in a -- that the right of the people to be secure in their persons. Out their person in the -- about it. Houses papers and act against unreasonable searches and seizures. Shall not be violated and no warrants shall issue but upon probable cause remember -- chestnut. The thing about that is like the guy the scanner he's prize like these attacks and he starts like peering into the kind of smaller write the text ads they think. Looking at the mileage out there and that's like half hour. Redevelopment -- Alan I also wondered about the Whitman does -- through -- given in the double barrel. But I think that problem and here's your Fourth Amendment. And. Cody in Tennessee pointed us to a lack Astoria on techcrunch about a little company called the -- -- Which he says are getting real creative with streaming content if it doesn't stand up in court that all those apps that let you -- your home computer remotely. Are also in trouble and -- the course though this company. -- -- Two after a fashion you'd rent a dvd and a physical dvd player from this company perfect -- at a time. The -- the catch though is that the dvd player -- they come to your house nor does the dvd you operate the dvd player and the dvd inside. -- -- They say it as a really long cable and are really long remote control. And they say that it may be just enough of a loophole that they don't think -- to negotiate with content companies over streaming right. So therefore you could get eat up a much shorter release when he got the regular -- you release window and said that when he taping. That's the big and that's the biggest thing that makes this thing so crazy. Cuts that window off you get access to -- its streaming via dvd player -- that it's nothing we are. Oh sorry its its only all it is the really long cable laying it is really wanted I think is very clever that I wonder like and I do wonder if this'll work because it has that it -- -- the really good point. But if it doesn't stand up -- any any remote access app that lets you view your physical device and is potentially in trouble and that would be a pretty bad patent. The city and a college. Have our policies they college really happened is so popular Nina noble to workable gun them down with act but -- not the Colligan we're gonna find it politically that's the -- Limit after next eagle after all the complaints about the IOS four point two screen orientations amusements that job I immediately -- you guys who.
