First Look: Dyson DC35 Digital Slim2:45 /
The most powerful cordless vacuum cleaner-and one of the most expensive.
-Hi, I'm David Carnoy, executive editor for cnet.com and I'm here with a product we usually don't cover, a cordless vacuum cleaner. As you can see, this is kind of a special cordless vacuum cleaner, the Dyson DC35 Digital Slim. It's pretty high tech looking, so we thought we give you a quick video tour of it. Now, Dyson says the Slim has the most power-efficient motor ever developed for a cordless vacuum. It's got something they called Root Cyclone technology that creates a powerful centrifugal force to spin dust and dirt out of the air and into the bin. And the key thing here is that it's not supposed to lose suction as the bin fills up with junk. In our clean test, it didn't. We also like how the bin is easy to detach and empty. The slim comes with a few attachments including a motorized floor tool and a long-reach wand that basically turns this into a stick vacuum. What's interesting is that when you hold it, you don't feel like you're holding a hand vac, more of paintball gun without the paint balls. It's what you call a cleaning weapon and it's got a trigger here that fires it up. When you do press that trigger, the Slim makes a whirring sound that's a reminiscent of a power drill. There's both a standard power suction mode as well as a max mode that you engage by, you guessed it, the max button. Doesn't give you warp power exactly, but it does give you an extra kick for those tougher clean situations that you might encounter. The only problem when you hardwire with the max mode is that it kills the battery pretty quickly. The Slim has a built-in lithium ion battery that keeps the power from fading as you clean. But if you keep your finger on that max button, you're looking at about 6 minutes of vacuuming time. In standard mode, you get about 15 minutes and for a lot of people, that 15 minutes will be ample but we wouldn't have minded another 5 or 10 minutes of battery life. On the upside, this does charge fairly quickly for a cordless vacuum. It takes about 3 hours to charge it and it does come with a wall mounting kit and docking station. However, another thing that may disappoint some folks is that fact that you can't plug the Slim into the wall and use it as a corded vacuum. There's no pass through charging which is kind of a bummer because it's a really good vacuum that almost measures up to some of the better floor-standing miles out there. The other downside is the price as owners of Dyson products were aware, they tend to be on the expensive side and this model comes in at $299. That's a lot of dough to pay for cordless vacuum. However, I will say it's not only the best, but probably the most fun cordless vac I've tried. I'm David Carnoy and that's a quick look at the Dyson DC35 Digital Slim cordless vacuum.
