Laptops: Dell Mini 9

In the relatively new Netbook category, Dell's Inspiron Mini 9 stands out as an excellent example of the form. So much so that it's also our top laptop gift for the 2008 Holiday Gift Guide.

[ Music ] ^M00:00:07 >>Hi I'm Michelle Thatcher, Senior Associate Editor for CNET.com and I'm here today with our top laptop pick for the holidays the Dell Inspiron Mini 9. Now you may have heard about the new net book category of Mini laptops that are actually really great gifts because of their extreme portability and their low price. We've chose the Dell Inspiron Mini 9 because it's a particularly fine example of the firm. You can see that's its really lightweight. It's actually not that much larger than a trade paperback when it's closed. So you can carry it with you anywhere and ladies this includes throwing it in your purse. This Inspiron has a 9 inch screen which makes it ideal for surfing the web and keeping up on your email which is most of what you're gonna do on a system like this. The other nice thing about this laptop is that it has a fairly full suite of ports and connections for such a small system. There are 3 USB ports, a VGA out for presentations and an SD card reader so you can definitely connect this to all the peripherals that you're used to connecting your larger laptop to. Of course you'll have to make some small concessions with a laptop this small. This keyboard is actually a little bit cramped and some of the keys are not in their usual places so you'll have to adapt. You'll also make some concessions when it comes to what goes inside the case. Now there is an Intel Adam processor which offers enough performance for some basic computing needs but it's not gonna give you the same amount of performance that you'd expect from a larger, full featured laptop. [Background noise] There's also a sold state drive inside of here which means that you're gonna have a little bit less storage space than you might be accustomed to. So these are all things to keep in mind but the small size and lightweight of this system makes it a really great choice for anyone on your list who already has a main computer, maybe a desktop computer, and wants something really portable for travel. Pricing starts at about $350 dollars and that's for a lynx operating system and 8 gigabytes of drive space. Now if your loved ones have been very, very good you can spend about $500 and get Windows XP and 16 gigabytes of drive space. Whichever one you choose it's an excellent value for such a portable laptop. I'm Michelle Thatcher and this is the Dell Inspiron Mini 9. ^M00:02:06 [ Music ] ^M00:02:11
