CES vaporware
^M00:00:01 [ Music ] ^M00:00:06 >> Welcome to CNET's Top Five, for each time we meet we count down another Hot CNET list, I'm Tom Merritt. CES is coming again and like every year, we'll be there drooling over the latest and greatest products and prototypes from the tech industry but every year there's a handful...maybe, more than a handful of hot products that say they'll [inaudible] and don't. Now some past offenders were Blu Tooth and the Sling catcher, both of which eventually made it to market with varying degrees of success. We've identified five products form last CES that warmed our hearts in January but pretty much left us cold the rest of the year. Let's count down, the Top Five CES 2009 vaporware products. At number 5 the Echostar Sling Loaded HDDVR922. A Dish Network DVR with sling box built right in, sounds pretty awesome, right. It still sounds awesome but I can't find hide nor hair of such a thing anywhere on the internets. They said spring 2009, right now vapor. Coming in to number 4 the D-Link Extreme N450, the in router meant to support speeds of 450 megabytes per second, that's blistering fast, in my imagination, anyway because while D-Link does make gigabyte routers, the N450 never materialized. Up to number 3, the Dual Xnav 43HD was supposed to receive traffic from the clear channel total traffic network. It was supposed to have a spiffy built in HD radio tuner. It was supposed to be available in June for $279, it was not. Sliding into number 2, 3DTV, Samsung, Sony, LG and Panasonic all seem to indicate they would battle it out in 2009 for dominance in that newly emerging 3DTV market. Apparently it's still emerging, expect all the hype from last years CES to sort of be recycled and wrapped up again this year. Maybe 2010 will be less vaporous for 3D. Before we get to number 1, time for another lame prize. Last year we counted down the Top Five CES vaporware from CES 2008. what was number 1, hint...still not out but has a much more high profile company behind it now. Post your answer as a comment on the blog post for this topfive@blog.cnettv.com, if you're one of the first ten people to answer correctly you could win this Belkin lip balm, unused. I received this at last year's CES, it's suitable for protecting your lips from the effective vapors. All right, let's get to our number 1, the top vaporware item from CES 2009, number 1, it's the Cycle 5.1 PC gaming headphones and I made them number 1 because I love the idea of this product, it puts 5.1 surround sound on your head. Now according to its web site, they're sold out but they're taking pre-orders. So if you're a customer that received one of these this year, let us know, we'll amend our top five but even so hopefully we can goose the hamsters at the Psyko Audio labs to turn out more of these because I want one. We that's it for this addition of CNET Top Five, don't forget to post your answer to the lame prize question at blog.cnettv.com and you could take home the Belkin lip balm and you know what I'm throwing in a CNET patch too because lip balm's almost a little too less. I'm Tom Merritt, see you next time. ^M00:03:30 [ Music ] ^M00:03:32
