CNET News Video: Cell phone photos to help when you forget

1:01 /

Your smartphone's camera should do more than just snap shots of family and friends. Put it to work as a powerful tool to help you remember all sorts of useful information. CNET's Kara Tsuboi explains in this Tech Minute.

Treat your phone's camera like the photographic memory you wish you had. If you're prone to losing things, take a photo of your dry cleaning ticket or coat check ticket because those paper slips are always disappearing. Photograph your kid before a big outing, so you have a good image of what he's wearing that day. And if your friends forget to give you back your stuff, grab a pic of them holding that item. To jog your memory, take a picture of the inside of your fridge before you go grocery shopping. Or a picture of landmarks around where you parked your car, even your hotel if you're in a new city. And when you're packing up to move, photograph the contents of each box. Before you leave on that big trip, snap photos of key documents like your passport, credit cards and your kids' birth certificates. Also, prescription pill bottles including the bar codes for easy refills. Just make sure you have a passcode to protect your phone. Also, look up directions and take screen shots of key routes, that way you have map directions stored in your camera roll even if you don't have access to WiFi. In San Francisco, I'm Kara Tsuboi, CNET.com for CBS news.
