XCAR: Caterham SP/300.R: Trackday car to take you to the next level of performance driving

3:35 /

The Caterham SP/300.R is an ideal car if you want a trackday car that you can use to advance your driving skills. As intimidating as it looks it really can be your first step towards being a real racer.

-The Caterham Lola SP/300.R is a program that we did with Lola with regards to providing a product that enhances our motor sport offering to our racing drivers that race in our Caterham 7 championships. We're stepping into unchartered waters, but very much so we're still within the framework of providing customers something different and something exciting. The brand DNA of Caterham is about the driver involvement and making the drive experience as simple and as straightforward as we possibly can, and we try to replicate that within the SP/300. R. It doesn't so much flatter the driver. It can intimidate in terms of looks, but once you're in it it's almost like driving a 7 in terms of the feedback that the car provides. It might not look like a Caterham 7 but it certainly drives not too dissonant. The Caterham 7 for us is at the heart of everything that we do. I drove at Rockingham. It flattered me and I drove well within my own very limited capabilities, but I was amazed how easy it was to drive and how it was willing to be pushed without riding any surprises. It was fun which is what a Caterham product must be all about. It put a huge smile on my face and I didn't really want to get out of it, and it was only because the light was fading that they were forcing me out of the car. -We did a few laps in Spain. We didn't, you know, feel it's like a race car you know with suspension and with power, everything, you know. The feeling with the pedals is pretty solid. So pretty good. -I was extremely fortunate to be able to try out the Caterham myself and discovered that while it is indeed incredibly intimidating to step into something like this, once you get it going it is astounding just how friendly it is. The drive itself is so surreal simply because it looks and feels like I shouldn't be allowed to drive something this gear for racing without years of training. But not only did I feel completely secure; I was eerily calm despite the surging adrenaline. Everything became muffled and silent even with that colossal noise. The experience is unforgettable, and although it is indeed accommodating to drive visible levels it unfortunately isn't idiot-proof as I quickly discovered. It's not his fault though. The SP/300.R is just too good for me.
