Car Tech Live 225: We shred the 2012 Nissan GT-R

Auto Tech
But the rab board is coming with the heart of a Tesla. AAA can now bring you a -- -- gallon of water. Toyota turns car windows into the romper room mirror. And will drive the -- well yeah Nissan GTR. And out of a deal at all. There's another day around car tech live driving GT -- words and stuff like. -- folks in his car tech live welcome to -- welcome to our 225 show for July 21 I'm Brian Cooley with Wayne Cunningham and -- to went out this week he's already -- data that -- here and decided he likes comic book characters more than -- proceed -- -- -- comic -- Anybody isn't cool cars down there -- on his own times superior to ours -- an even assignment and I had dinner on our commitment. Okay so this is going on this week we have a whole batch of news about electric cars and cars and have alternate power train to start off here with the show store you just heard the -- -- -- is the -- for. Is finally coming as an electric car -- Nevada electric -- for for a while what's new here. Well this is this is a new one attended the acting -- is gonna come to the public Serbia until that the public in 2000 well I don't care. There have been some reports going around saying that this one would only be available to -- customers. Now government and in that kind of utilities -- but dad -- on -- said confirm that this one will be unsealed everybody. But this is not the first -- -- -- for there's ever been that's rights they did that one back in the day and late nineties. And they I think there's still -- those are run and around the roads to. That was it because it. -- the early route -- that was really pretty homely looking yap very -- little thing -- smaller might wait though which is good for electric current. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- And -- into electric car. So we got a photo here in -- posting up at the cars dot cnet.com car tech blog you can see it's got you -- the nice modern sleek lines of a current or future -- for as it will be yet. I think about it here is it's coming fairly soon this picture is actually the concept that they showed it yet. Los Angeles auto show last year -- last December whatever and we saw that less than a year ago. And as of their origami have in this -- come to market to next year. -- know -- next -- just when he twelve subsidiary they haven't really been specific about that so. You know I don't know will be when he -- model or point thirteen model -- later in the year -- -- currently has some good appealed because it's a nice utilitarian packaged I think for folks who want the car it's very efficient I think a lot of also -- to be utilitarian not just. A little tiny -- -- efficient but gives up a bunch of practicality. And it would not in a may not look like electric garlic believe has that unique look and -- -- Is -- me I think witnessed by gonna go for just make -- look like a normal in. You know I'm sure I'll just like the regular route for new and different betting that would make sense for them give differentiate unless they're gonna make it a Prius family is that's -- -- that it looks. If it's really different it's gonna become a variant of Prius or this'll just be -- the electric. Route for the -- -- on this is under the hood well under the whole. Belly -- that is Tesla guts. Yes yet Tesla is supplying the empower trained in the scanner which is there a deal they did. Last summer -- -- -- -- investment and the and Tesla got a plant that -- And they got a whole out of Atlanta been down avenue -- plant down and Tesla is occupying about a tenth of the this much -- this little corner but they're making the power train here which is an interesting it's nice feather in their cap to say look we build electric power train for a high profile car outside of our own right Nestle inside. Yeah a little program riots have for the Intel inside version of car labeling like a Microsoft and Ford do with the it'll sync it and they they say or Twitter says that with -- -- the -- power train. That'll get -- 10100 real world models okay that it's gonna be rated at 150 -- and you'll have to be yet because if there's in real world that will mean that. You can use the air conditioning in the right whenever you. You need to go downhill all the time. That's cool that's that's a huge bonus number three digits -- okay I really have -- get a hundred miles out of it that sounds like Kindle a nice comfortable numbers of psychological. Are -- keep an -- on this against something around 2012 it'll be arriving and available to the public we don't know pricing we don't know date yet but this could be. A pretty significant seller a new entrant in electric car category that's not weird it's -- -- the consumers have to learn about like a -- they're still figuring out what that is a Prius had to go through that for awhile. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- That does Electric's Nissan has some. I almost wanna -- each -- raised the price on the -- We talked a couple weeks got a belief is selling really well compared to the -- and even though they're very different cars architecturally. They get compared in lumped together blocking consumers' minds and in the mainstream media. So they do fight a battle even though yeah I know they're very different cars were aware that. So they've raised the price now on the 2012 -- which -- be coming -- shortly by about 2400. Dollars. But they're going to improve some of his standard gear also Edison isn't a major update Italy and -- it'll look like the lead mechanic yet -- -- eleven. Yeah they made some Agassi meets on there's. Optional equipment standard down yet coupled and I think -- cold weather package is now standard. -- -- that's only it'll appeal to -- certain people on certain markets. And they're also roll it out to some more states and may have different from couples to an entity at the yet is the the SL I think some of that we -- And I think that's the base trim level now that's 37 to fifteen. Let's see the new price is going to be another SV is the state no -- -- 35200. OK that'll be the new base and the SL. It's going to be 37 to -- -- their two models we have the SL. Com and the SV is going to have I think for the first time the fast charging port which it didn't have before for the level three charger. So the base car will include that in a cold weather package -- level three targeting file and all over the road there's -- -- but effort of the delegates that. Is that it's EM right. They're gonna launch they first launched in seven states now they're gonna -- Alabama. Florida Georgia Illinois Maryland Mississippi North Carolina South Carolina Virginia and Washington so a lot of states that are non coastal. And just I think this news just indicates that it's doing well there must be doing -- sales of their competent enough to say. -- we can bump the price and -- out more states and sell and amp amp amp plus it does indicate to some degree that they've got. Or didn't have any serious issues with tsunami. Assembly mission yet so they obviously the parts and and the supply line for this obviously is in is back in good shape because they're selling. It with the numbers were about fourteen or 15100 a month. As of the story we had a couple weeks go compared to Google doing a Al 500 laughs so that was kind of a rough comparisons and a crank and a good number of these and that would get them on track for 20000 more in the first year. And should put them contract for doing the in the US assembly to which they had delayed on the previously. I think they need to announce recently that they're going to be building -- motors electric motors for the cars in Tennessee and -- someone on their new headquarters here. Pancreas also got put on hold for US manufacturer. Produces anything -- -- that partly because the economy went alt key and and partly of course in the -- issues. Went wrong and it's been really hard for Toyota to get a handle on when they're gonna start to make this and is looking at nothing new on the Prius being built in the US this is basically on back burner right now. So that's the leaf can keep these numbers going perhaps it'll come to the US -- manufacturer that that does appeal to certain content to customers who wanna. By American from a Japanese -- and these elites you know what might become more more you know present on the road to me that -- -- Even now and like obsolete that -- -- important says -- other -- stressing volts no one feels they've seen many of of -- and I've seen mostly. Leaks. I've seen a few acting like maybe Tubal Tamara have seen more leafs yeah. You know candidate Clinton -- you -- here we see a little bit of everything. This markets particularly differently in San Francisco. I know when you've got -- relief. When you're out their driving you forget the charger in your stuck on the side of the highway we told you a few weeks ago how there are now roadside assistance trucks in Japan. They can give you a quick little jump start just to get you to the nearest charging station a few miles -- to -- 1015 miles. Now it's been announced of the US -- -- just a few weeks after that Japanese announcement. Now has a plug in charging service on some pilot vehicles of their trucks it in Tennessee -- watching -- video version there it is new branding on the truck. Mobile electric vehicle charging. It's not yellow truck its interest. That's always been -- thing that what they're doing is in this in six areas six markets which are going to be their test markets which are Seattle SF bay LA. Knoxville. Near -- near Nissan and Sandra -- Tampa up and Portland. So areas where they obviously -- -- with -- researched and to -- their own research of their member data a lot of folks are interest that are have a meeting. There -- -- the most electric cars around I would assume yet to get some visibility and try this out so they're saying here they have level two and level three on these trucks that's been serious. I guess you don't wanna be sitting on the side of the road to bongo with -- member to our state at this trucks slowly. And don't give a 110 -- -- it. A high corners diner and another driver -- hang out at. Have a couple theory. So they say here do depending on the kind of car. And the kind of charger can accept level to level three level two's 220. And level three is 480. You can spend ten to fifteen minutes getting a charge -- -- -- to three to fifteen miles of range hopefully that's far enough to get -- to life and how to enter a look at it let's say you know immediate part of Portland and you're the -- he's pretty quick. So that you're gonna want the longer charge. Near the Bay Area are usually pretty near something. LA of course the same Knoxville I don't know the lay of the land is there yes that is areas you -- and doesn't take much to be more than fifteen miles away from civilization can get the practice to follow you around in your UV was a long court at a it's gonna and click on generating. -- refueling. That this got to just rival on together with the truck right behind yet. That works. Well I get even your phone's -- you can plug it in and use it right off the charger -- -- -- barely charges they won't or for a long considered -- -- -- care but too much. A power on this that distract -- it's illegal to have the tether between two cars in most states. This thing to spot a so anyway -- does have charging assistant so for those of you out there knows that many of electric car but if you get stranded don't -- -- Alameda -- you'll AAA card. If you're one of those markets analog you are those exiting now all of this is fine and -- -- electric cars and the batteries and all that but. -- -- a bunch of statistics and numbers -- considerations and came up we have the definitive answer and content what's the best eco car what did you look at. Well I was looking at 2011 models and really just looking at the EPA numbers so. Yeah it's a really. It's not the best comparison in a lot of ways but it just by the numbers what would be the best car. The solos are MPG in some of those are MP GE right. And so it ended at the top. Two economy cars -- in the country two -- -- models on the EPA according to EPA. The Nissan leaf tops the -- hundred. Whatever miles per gallon equivalent yeah 812 or something he had to something ridiculous up there as the nearest suitable comes in bootable it's weird because than it has. The elect -- electricity rating which is 93 and MPG yeah -- And then 37 miles per gallon gas in the two numbers are really confusing element carper consumer -- and united and -- average which is 65 miles per gallon if you drove it. Halftime and -- on gas and electricity it's probably not very accurate -- it. Is close to what I saw driving a car that I got about sixty -- overall mixed and I think. And analog company driving the course out for commit more conventional cars that -- at a previous fifty miles per gallon that's that's the average gets according to medium. EPA and then three in the -- at TDI sport wagon to. Get a diesel and there. -- 34 miles per gallon and not nearly as good as the other cards but then okay how much -- each car initially cost. And in net cents a based Prius is only 21 point so you know -- is Prius -- -- next is the Jetta TI and then. Everything else is way more expensive. Our range. The the Prius wins again. Is it just runs all the time I 136 miles on a single -- on a single tank was about battery ethernet and that's EPA numbers again. You might you probably a different. Via the jet only gets for an in 44 miles which -- still pretty good. It's a must have both a smaller. A smallish tank and obviously lower MPG that's quite a stark difference in -- idea and then of course -- -- -- belief which is 73 miles ordinance he notes are out of that race yet. Rather than the other thing again annual fuel cost -- of course the pure electric heat Nissan -- is going to win that's earned 61 dollars of electricity yet again. Remotely per -- in and united goes up I think that the worst and that use them that lead to Jeddah TI is actually 1715. And -- only partly due to a higher priced diesel. -- and in a dosing diesel has not been cheap in decades -- it's got expensive. So it 1520 years ago -- -- it stopped being a third the price of gas like it was a long time ago. And we brought and other things like C dean capacity and a cargo capacity as well so don't want. You make five of -- six cry -- ultimately the one that the did the best was the Prius. Prius boring but true right yeah I mean it's got good passenger volume did cargo volume. It today and it does the best in the most categories so that's -- thing. It does everything really well it's not the highest of sheer Green -- Delete that's not the highest in terms of performance -- -- of the -- -- a nice performance car in a sense -- agree low end torque. A -- carries a lot more to wagon but overall. Yeah I mean it's interesting I think in the sensor the most disappointed car in all of this might be the volt which -- -- one nothing. Yeah is that fair -- it. And that but inevitable to such a weird vehicle because -- -- -- under electricity than you might get better in a lot of categories. Did you -- hands on how you're doing it. Now what one pamper inevitable was it only has -- -- -- worthy of the presidency in five -- retrospect console on the back is the T shaped battery yet. -- -- -- about that they -- that until some of the passenger -- just the general passenger volume of families out -- -- -- went to kids about to groceries are both back there and that ends up being a little bit -- yes cells that give -- comparison it doesn't mean go out and buy a -- if you want the best it economic and domestic eco car around no but it's the -- -- real world decisions that people actually make on the shopping. Yet as opposed to just when we do review we just look at some -- numbers -- can compare there's some kind of the intangibles here. It -- what people really care about the political mileage and all that met the bottom line before the exercise in the Bobbitt on on the dotted line is way to. The only got seating for full yet I can be we're gonna live this day in and day out we're gonna -- -- -- him -- in between the back seats -- that gonna be a problem. But -- a lot of situations ceiling of Sony's commuting to work when he miles. -- there and back every day at least might be perfect yeah amber -- and most people are gonna have a range anxiety -- -- -- people who got a good urban commute. We'll look at that so that's all I need especially if you're if you're an urban single or childless couple you don't need a big spacious car or oral Jetta wagon you know where you have an extra car it is that you can take the longer drives yeah I imagine they're very -- people who -- -- -- as their only. An interesting is there's an album that's -- people go through it more than just the numbers they go through the other numbers cargo seating. You know -- -- it live ability at an annual fuel cost -- -- Roland. So if you wanna -- specifics on how Wayne came to the Prius. Is still king -- dammit decision at that. Because it deserves it lets face it we don't get excited about the car because it's been around -- -- a solid fifty miles per gallon and by opener in thirty miles range in and -- aware -- -- the love the look for the next new thing we -- The Prius is not the new thing anymore but its its its earning its keep. Now if you wanna go completely different direction. -- yes and you wanna be still be efficient routes by about this much. You can go get a a new Mercedes. And it has. Green engine kind of sort of lots asterisk. And yet -- SO KAMG in a new one -- while -- -- -- -- -- And the eight direct injection -- I point five liter and -- in putting so under the activation into it. That's weird -- run on four cylinders if you are under 3600 rpm. That's -- that's interesting that's kinda like a pretty high level to be under the activation minutes via its aggressive when you are sent to BS CU -- -- button pushed in the comfort -- the -- obviously not leaning in the throttle. But this is ultimately normally see in performance engines to begin -- in big V -- certainly not an AMG cars is very unusual to see this aggressive. Of an economize in technology. While -- cars over something else while Mercedes-Benz really pointed out -- -- announcement that that. -- F one cars use solar deactivate this is that true parent could ever acts. I guess in if you wanted to do you want to minimize that pit stops and you can cut out being a cylinders of that's actually true because that's one of the big deals are strategizing. Their. I'll be damned look at this it is on -- -- -- -- one. And this is an issue as a post on F one technical. But it says here that yes there is actually one of the posters -- says yes -- B activation is -- is now common. On -- but -- cars the McLaren Formula One team has developed -- way to deactivate some cylinders when idling at the end of the pit exit area they do that again. In the pit where you can you -- to go slow -- you are you happy to slow when you don't. EBay sellers in there yet why burn the fuel those things sucked down fuel -- and maybe not the biggest engines but they're on -- The same posters as I seriously doubt the activation is used as a means of conserving fuel since the engines are wide open throttle -- the time. And the activating cylinders would reduce power making them dead weight to carry around its interest in racing. Well actually -- actually avenue with a Formula One cars it's you know it for the two seconds they're decelerating -- turn down what beings. They cut out the cylinders and then you for the one and half second yes alerting -- that turn them they bring all cylinders back on. I never knew they use that in him. Interest in uniform on the is a definitely a number of stories are about that that's completely new to me aren't cool so -- that's what's coming up in this of the SOK the. And we're gonna see that when it at the Frankfurt Auto Show this this year -- AMG version we haven't seen before gather their. You knew what they're unveiling that it's an S -- 55 AMG. Now most of the Indy cars we've seen recently been 63 -- -- so there India 63 AMD's which is -- here on three liter engine. This one will be a new IS OK and and they've never done 63 SOK so this'll be -- -- that's -- 55. In the SLK just remind folks is the one the got totally refreshed at what show was at Geneva they rolled out the redesigned one -- thinks that's yet another Mercedes-Benz roadster -- -- they finally took a little roadster and made it look not like a dork Napster yet and it isn't that cool looking tired and had a Yang had a bad little. Goofy look and look to it until they gave it much more of an SL look it looks like the big SL now. It kind. And not so much like this little silly Korea here's -- here's a little look at it and a lot of close look at SO came across a group dispose -- -- what's the video version let's see the best picture of it is probably this one. -- kind of how they had opposed to Geneva it was kind of in this pewter color cell. In a front -- -- straight up SL. And the back end is really Kirby and comes to -- and and SL ass shape in the back in a cab -- -- -- -- -- Malia. Between -- vendors yet -- -- way back tear drop around the -- on the greenhouse and it's set way back to its very. -- -- -- That's a cool house ago. Contessa has the best -- hours please let -- let's go up so anyway owls so -- we'll keep an -- on that we will see the AMG version and this engine at Frankfurt. Of it now. We've heard about just about every kind of autumn or autumn automation technology in cars and avoid scratches there was -- story this week that the insurance industry is lauding -- blow for their city safe which is the one that. Won't run into pedestrians. Yet or other cars which is great for yeah you know not damaging durable while they think the insurance companies -- more money on minor fender benders than they do on the big accidents more common and they're all other totally come. You know so the assurances he -- to -- that's a yes -- keep making things that save us from those two to 5000 dollar repairs were always showing up for what -- -- -- They're gonna go a different wasting if you're about to hit let's say a pedestrian or some other obstacle I guess another car. You can break that's one way to avoid it wouldn't we just steer away from. And so they've got the story that we just -- the car tech blog literally -- for showtime here and it's a pre collision steering avoidance systems of the cardinal does whip away. From what it's about to potentially hit and -- if the excerpt from. But apparently that -- -- -- they don't hit any like seventies retro -- to the hate us. Because it's got like the the cool pop over hat from Carnegie streets and dynamic. -- that. -- anything like -- -- or something but. He's got this gig at the suede jacket and the cool Connell likes certain hang up a little lord fall Roy for a officer reportedly in the boots -- they get this. This is bizarre. I think giddy like a child like running -- -- -- heart -- -- -- at the hipster saint Damien -- at the -- -- wandered across the -- wonder where they get -- I forgot to get their iPod in their prayers and I -- FaceBook team and -- during the this does mitigate should be able to Smartphone exam hosting. What's my status -- about to get hit sand. Critical to -- the reason why they can do this technologies because -- the electric power steering that's becoming just more right -- and in cars. Yeah that you -- -- -- -- and do different things like automatic parking. While now with electorate electric cars during on the industry to take over and bureau wave from union of the path of the pedestrian in front of -- So I'm thinking they're using almost all existing parts here in terms of the got millimeter radar going forward to detect and they've got its the Paris during electric like you sake is indicated it -- hydraulics during -- dump. -- -- Electric's -- -- can get computer control and the last thing I'm thinking here -- they must be using the blind spots and lane departure technology authority in these cars. To make sure they're not gonna steer in the past one of a car. Well I imagine they've got some more sensors may be a couple more sensors on the pattern they got a really haven't -- View of the surroundings so that if there is another. Car or pedestrian there they're not that doesn't nudity and -- dead yet I saved you and I and wherever you doesn't that that the watched. So. At least they can leverage the existing sensors that they have to add others it's not it's a story -- sheet. But it just goes to show how these auto makers. Can largely -- software at this point to add dramatic new physical features a -- can do things by adding another you know few thousand lines of code or whatever using the existing sensors and say what else can we do. It's a dozen orcas -- not say when it's gonna come to market but they are talking about it. According to our piece here DeLeon put up a you know they're they're executives are making noises like soon not not -- laboratory and it's pretty realistic technologies -- -- no reason why can't there's not that we haven't seen the stuff before this is not coming soon. And this is from Toyota this I hope it's not residents of goofy it's called window on the world would have to the world. In -- theater watching our video stream you can see how this works will describe it for you -- Toyota. -- -- -- And there in the backseat shooting out the second row side glass windows child sitting there and now she's reaching up and she's actually painting on the window like it's an Etch A Sketch but using your fingers sort of knobs and destroying on the window overlooking -- a cable -- -- weird. It's like an LCD. Sketch pad sort the current institute interest and -- the car keeps driving. And now she pushes a region of the glass. And brings up at this range finder function. And now on the glass in sort of augmented reality the car is pointing to things like a distant farm house and calling up the distance. As you know ten year old kids are fascinated by the distance to watch us. 34 meters to that dead tree Branson's. Got the golfer in the making these -- that this is a -- -- offers a little Michelle -- -- sit here and saying hey Alan how far that that biking is like if I could -- to that. Now the kids -- for -- -- bunch of farm animals cows and a corral this is the -- this and the cool thing she -- a multi touch drag. And the window becomes a zoom viewfinder. That's a trip. Yet I can't imagine how it does that it's -- it's very very cool. Although the video is actually just a -- this is in something they actually installed it doesn't look real right yes apparently they're showing this at a future tech. I think in Brussels right now okay -- they episode of -- few displays samples and it's not like the people drive around in cars human cases are still very conceptual but Toyota thinks they can turn the glass into augmented reality panels is based in lucas'. I yeah I like the zoom function and then that's pretty cool yeah I get one tomorrow what what -- of the comet enters in our post but a for a few days said. I liked it this is great project connect chicks. Spot -- we don't reviews were done -- yet done. I mean you drive on and -- an obvious -- noted. Pinch and zoom pan and zoom -- they also said that this can be used for is to identify objects. You -- your -- language. Oh right it's like translators of -- something it can do object recognition. Yeah and then be like one of those little -- translation things and say that is they've balked at Monica who. Oro and little sheepish she just drew mysteries that anyway we get the video up on now on our show notes those -- -- -- -- tech Nazi attack on a blog -- what languages that and Barca Spanish for now. I don't look now in Colorado power ups -- -- better but he can -- them released in -- -- yes because that's where our local town of backup -- gets its name -- you got it architecture. -- -- -- -- -- MacArthur tabloids -- -- -- -- -- there bird -- say there ago we just refuted and then backed up ourselves. But it's our last historical we get to our on the road section is. This is a strange one -- little nervous. The rapid transit system near the Bay Area Bart bay area rapid transit is gonna redo its harbors its train cars. They get -- -- Davis. BMW button. And BMW's gonna -- design the the component of the commuter system commuter rail system in the simmers can Bay Area. Yeah its. You know it's funny these cars are it's a fairly futuristic looking car I mean these cars like anything you seem -- -- looked there are there modern transit -- of of the company. Diseases like mid seventies design -- -- apparently these are actually the oldest cars in the country. -- may -- or hopefully they haven't really changed since they launched this service yeah I mean I guess the New York subway trains or even newer and he's now. That's a that's a BMW design works which is a division of BMW and it's a USA division has doing this I think it's like Porsche design. Which is it really part of Porsche but is related. Question and answer portion designs were adding that but was like a brother respond often took the name one of design which USA as -- as part of the Internet individually bought some design company while -- so they own them and they won the content design works as they won the contract to a redesign our -- and they're gonna do -- exteriors and interiors and in the yet look at the driver control box so what -- we wanna see happen is that at. While the -- now go eighty miles per hour maximum let's bring that up -- yet 200 that's gratuitous -- album -- -- during rush -- -- express train you can -- an M train -- -- label that would be cool -- -- Okay so that we wanna see we wanna see better body work on these things we wanna see BMW style fairing is on the side of the of the -- you have taken against claims citing that as it's gonna be -- -- angles I know again no big button back and carcass they wouldn't dock right they wouldn't connect with a got to put it does and that's good and fresh that would even happen -- -- on that and I guess they could put Leo is that I drive controller in the cap fruit yet for the driver who will -- have no idea to build drive and everything. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- And you'll get sport bucket seats in the united in in the trains here commuted to be -- in Switzerland -- by our Europe in my first class ticket. That would have the sport pockets in its second classic at the -- seats -- I would be really cool. So well there's there's there's hope yet for me to actually. Use mass transit that that this would be may be the one thing it would take to get me on a train in the city of the New York. Well aren't so -- -- -- -- -- redo we have no those sketches of it like that yeah it's still early days. We'll hear more about -- see what they can do to make a parked train look a little bit like less like a refrigerator laying on its side. Our folks let's get on to our on the road segment for this week and it's a particular treat we have this time around. By taking a one of the cars is from the one of the two or three favorites. All the time perennially. We have our users and viewers like you and that is the now revised only for the first time since its US launched. Nissan GTR so women and -- -- -- -- -- in the 2012. GTR premium let's take a look. Making power to discard it. Horsepower. But that's only coming from six cylinders the -- -- -- later -- six. That twin Turbo -- -- you know where your big power like it's got. But this is such a high tech that is don't Turbo lag and it just shoots forward like what you -- area just winds. Interesting and it sounds like old tank car. Very mechanical you can hear the transmission flipping here and meshing together and you can hear a lot of road noise and it's also -- very rough ride even in the government. Yeah it's sad it's really not that car that would be very comfortable of the daily driver. Fuel economy when we -- -- And -- it is just trying to get referendums are very Todd stepped card. Even when that hits it's got an adaptive M suspension which is set in different modes right now we have an bracelets -- in the -- Bradley again. It's got an -- it's got a normal mode and it's got a -- mode and comfort in the stars like sports mode and most other irons. Dad still pretty jarring. And -- -- -- -- -- you don't from covered terrain that's our new look this down and -- student attendance. The -- out a little bit and I think it's only become the next big difference between them and then even matters. It's. Because they had dual -- gearbox. That's not a manual transmission about automatic transmission and it's kind of a mix of both Scott Axel double clutch is that there. It is really shifting and grabbing -- years. I was a torque converters such heinous it you know -- goes really well. And the best thing about that is when you are racing through the -- in the -- -- between second and third which. I got to enjoy today. It's just just so fast and some think it's just faster than you can ever do. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- There's almost zero interruption of power between -- I'd hate for anyone who's ever complained about -- coming in -- manual instead and trust me you're not missing anything. -- indeed doesn't needed and would really did make a slower. Now one thing to -- between the Lebanese and regulations and has been a road here. And the suspension is a step and it's got the electronic. Dampers. That it actually it really stays planet on the road and it doesn't sound don't you -- when you over the rest of it just -- stays on the road. And a hug and that's where you are desperate. That's a lot. Native -- you like even without all the electronics it's got big tires and we are -- just really built for this car. There's just got a lot of grip just the way it's engineer. Does that sound again does that sound so you can hear that -- chirping. I'd never had a card do that before so -- that we got the tires so hot and so sticky. That it was kind of -- catching and releasing like it went like glue was released. Yet as I and a slide anymore -- -- gripping never gripping -- so tacky can do is pretty warm day are up that -- was of the infineon on raceway in Sonoma valley north of us here in San Francisco. -- so much need of grip I mean just even without -- electronic controls. And as big tires and the state -- those mentioned those rear tires are on -- and a half inch programs. Which are like you know it's a it's a steamroller its hugely why the fronts are only an inch narrower and a huge wide tires and -- thing. What do we start with this car and it's -- power story primarily -- handling story. Yeah you know the one -- -- -- -- you can dude just as well on the track like where you had it and as on public roads finally yet. -- as I headed on a just a fantastic twisty road San Antonio valley road behind mount Hamilton here. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Just a little punch of the acceleration and brings us back right out yet you know the front tires from real scrabble on debt that -- and -- -- and just dig dig -- yet to do amazing things of the scar. Here is just for kicks let's go look at -- drive here -- our Google Earth look at it. San Antonio road San Antonio valley road to this is coming on behind. An observatory just outside of silicon about this the kind of tortured road you can hammer this car on. And these are tight turns and cellular therapy and that's that's -- kinky and yes second and third years stuff relate at best yet. -- and -- what they did find is there's not a lot of overlap between second and third so you really have to be working in the years hard yeah. You know you have to even though in second you're gonna hear this horrible grinding noise from the engine and in the transmission. You still have to hit that year -- winded up to 6000 -- -- -- -- option to third when you when you can pull out of. You gotta work all those rpm -- -- on this car Miriam rewards it at least it's got tons of -- -- you can you can be lazy if you want. But to really get the best handling out of it you really need to wind it out and it rewards that here's a great piece of San Antonio valley -- this is where you want to be GTR -- me in the gap. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Which is kind of the opposite happened before his. And you. The comfort ride was okay but those okay this time yeah yeah I didn't you there is drops a completely opposite you get the right it was five in the first gen car dash and -- -- okay agent and in copper -- does go on like this is still pretty harsh. Yeah I know they they did that -- out some of the the sound via but it you know may have -- -- hung over her -- and I can't get out -- -- -- part of it hit head on W does pounding on the back of my head from the seat you know I've heard from every bump it was it was improve. Does not you it's it was a compliant enough riders -- had a problem when you put it in comfort mode might assume that the video you're watching a video version others who come from -- -- exist before. -- you hold this transmission -- suspension button down to one of its three settings and it goes into this mode where it's more compliant but they had very strangely. -- this happen consulate is starting to feel that the car had some how old twist it doesn't mean. But the way to the wheels are -- within their active suspension to -- things that I kept thinking now and imagine it's a tried again tomorrow and I did it again reminds me of one of my old cars that's a convertible that only does cut the top off but it's -- -- Until the whole card does this longitudinal twisty right now and -- -- at all and it kind of felt a -- I kept noticing and I. I'd read my mind that would courage army -- as his -- at -- twist amusement this thing is more rigid than Richard Nixon's there's no way that's what it is it just. Something about the front suspension I think it's kind of alternating. Compliance across the two wheels or something so one is stiff and one's not -- -- time and as I felt I was guessing but it was really odd to the problem. Not a big deal -- -- notice that in particular. What they -- dad did notice and an engine still has that kind of and -- grind the sound quality to it. Yet and this is -- -- like with a Ferrari get a certain musicality with that engine did this -- does not sound pre now the Sunday apparently had no interest in making it sound like. You know a musical instrument or you know even even the -- -- -- -- and the MD has that nice. Mark you know and yet it's got a refined gas the -- not now at all. Now they just said we don't care what it sounds like it's gonna go -- fast eight bit sound -- -- delay deployment dead at screeching. That gives you -- engine entire there. It's -- sound of basically a large truck going really fast. A year ago -- listen everybody. -- I have. I gotta make that statement right there it. I did like -- of the Turbo chargers you'd hear that -- and it pulled yeah community here that huge rushing sound so this car when you started and it says in the -- which I brought it says this vehicle makes than usual noises not found the typical cars are completely ordinary. Its inlet to the quick start guide and it's as a -- we've started its -- place it -- coming unbolted. Umi started to get drinking you're digging digging sound yet and it's just it's just the thing warming up I don't know boy and don't take into your mechanic -- you think you know a little -- in the back. Ad does that and get us a year you're rats all Boston I'll take off -- -- 120 grant. You don't wanna repair this thing okay so about the give about the listings laid out this is a this is a a front engine rear everything else card the transmission the transfer case for the all wheel drive and the differential course are all -- the back. But I was surprised the not -- -- -- a surprise of the weight distribution is 57431. -- those lopsided car original C operate performance car. -- that I didn't look at that their weight distribution to the front is 57. He's this really -- yeah front source the first number yes the front eagerly pushed all the figure to the rear. They saw this big nose heavy car which I guess is part of what they did it because it they didn't this thing would be like you know 6040 which is unheard of and a performance car. Yet -- they -- it for balance but you Agassi and still didn't get to do yeah I mean they get guitar -- great but it's just funny don't know we see that kind of a number. And the other big story here is over the twenty in 20092010. Car. Which was to -- and twenty. This is 2011 model year so the 2012 is only trouble is -- the first two years -- 2010 and 2011 model years. Is this chorus fifty more horsepower in the near their -- so it's 530 which we've been saying verses 480 -- That's huge. Oh and the fact they get that out of the three point eight liter -- 56 a compact B six twin Turbo is okay you've -- that. -- they raised the Turbo pressure. They revise the intake made it more breathing better they change -- -- time instantly to -- -- -- -- and preventable or free flow exhaust yeah I got fifty horsepower out of Apple's. That's unbelievable. On a specific car it's already a very high horse power if you had a car that was -- -- that's one thing but. And the car was already putting -- alive and when they can say sixteen miles per gallon city 23 miles per gallon pretty impressive yet not that we never got close to that I averaged fifteen. Yet have that was what it's -- on the tribute I did a yet take -- and is an act while point seven. He -- -- that when your mostly -- hammering its that was some freeway driving Morris on the trip computer get up to nineteen. That was in the San Antonio valley road with a lot of yet -- it goes a long drive that -- has a long road yet but then I get about a freeway and just and some. Got patents and traffic to which -- aggregate -- now the suburban drive until with a good mix get a meter said fifty I never did a tank average on some of it's a little optimistic. Palm but anyway that's a big store in this -- is a lot more horsepower they raised the price on it like four grand I think it's up to nine. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- almost no options there's a rear camera for 600 bucks. A Chrome -- Jack for 300. A Chrome Jack handles -- think eighteen. And a seatbelt extender for where he sees X strangest option list in humankind. Seatbelt Extenders Hewlett -- know that the seatbelt extender. For -- really fat people who buy this thing I don't get why you would. App -- app and it would agree for now here's here's an the bad thing I've gotta say is I think there would still I think I would prefer a BMW and still get an -- three. Yeah. Up you know it's I think -- DTD camera perform better might be faster on the track tunnel that absolutely it is -- but. For daily driving its documentary. We just had that -- three and a few weeks ago that was a nice comparison the car so silky buttery smooth. It doesn't have the uncool as manners of this which is -- -- is the really fun cool car and like -- sites. The most that the most baddest thing you can you can before that analyst you could afford invade Iran and if so you're watching the wrong podcast you who watch in the Robb report -- or something. This is -- this is unbelievably cool but. A pretty car. Yeah and daily driver it would do it now I wouldn't and it's very claustrophobic -- with helium three is less so -- a compact you know car machine -- But -- giving it its full do it's an amazing car hats off to Nissan for amazing piece of engineering and a really fun -- But I hope the most people who buy these drive them and take them to the track and don't just speculate them or use -- -- a earlier. Because I was driving by there was a guy right near -- driving by he of the last generation silver one. I just look at the car and it was to clean thinking it's an aftermarket wheels on -- that -- like polished or some thing -- do not own you didn't get it. You didn't get it this cars either Chrome wheels on it that's been missed if you get the Dijjer you need to be going through one set of tires every year. And they're gonna cost you 530 bucks -- -- but before you melt them balance them and ship them from the tire rack. There's only one entire -- of the scars that Dunlop something Macs. And that's the only -- you can put on here that's gonna make the suspension work right. Sets flats of the 2000 -- -- 2300. Dollars every time you replace tires and you'll do that more than once a year if you drive this car at all. That's expensive. Has been some money on rubber. So anyway GTR hats off a normal car we love it monitors choice is it. You have really young -- -- electronic certainly to that. That level and that's part of what we consider that that's yeah and it has that really cool even talk about that multi -- LCD which is a carryover from -- but still that's one of the great poise in car tech but I don't need to -- nine Gates's and I don't and I love digital editing -- engages their plus five more in front of your former -- and this -- distraction of the worst. -- folks that's all we have one or -- this week also we wrap up just to get quick tease here -- went for a drive in the new sign on I Q. Yet this is the car that -- coming to you will be coming to the West Coast actually in October. And then throw the rest of the country out by march this is -- tiny tiny -- Ten feet long. Yet it still has a backseat that's a little bigger than a Smart -- but not much now and that's it I mean their cell these cars are gonna be great for city cars for parking. I was governor around it was so easy to jump and it is small spaces which it was just something you just. Blue for in the city yeah I wanna have that also a very tight turning it is -- ninety. And introduce -- regretted up on the video stream. It's just it's almost Pixar looking -- shortness aren't so it's almost silly. You know and only one point three liter engine which I was thinking okay and as you boring drive is gonna do on the strive the -- sponsored and -- -- -- out -- you know I was gonna meet. I'll look at the cars spent half hour and -- B you dug out yeah but it actually perform reasonably well. I'm surprised that a modern one point three if you keep the revs up it's a fun look only 85 horsepower but they've got -- CDT in the air that I think they. I haven't TVT tuned for low end torque that you know yeah -- actually make the car. Tree stump gears yet take off quickly and get movement yeah it's a cute looking car with a good adult up with the big wheels which are comic -- and run a small. -- you can get a and body -- towards it. It's an accredited and launch it'll have a five -- body -- available for -- plus side is a point -- other accessories. That one actually the one -- look at an on screen here is when I drove in -- through someone you roads in that actually it's and security lowering springs. That's okay whose governments lowering aspect to it can sway bar -- so so go watch the video Wayne's got up -- cars dot cnet.com and also he'll show you the offset. Door access yeah -- was a little weird like you can't get into the backseat to the driver's door to the drivers doors long. Passenger -- shorter -- actually the doors at the same length but the the passenger seat can go further forward because there's nothing in front of -- -- will cause otherwise you couldn't get the back at all they didn't do that right where there be no way. Interest and here's the back end of that idea that -- that since this show circuit a little bit parts of this is the solution little -- competitor to. Fiat 500. -- yeah and that yet -- -- yet 500 yeah better. And one cool thing to sort of mini is miles per gallon 37 combined which is you're thinking okay that's not forty like other -- beginning to combine combine -- that takes the highest. Non hybrid gas engined -- -- a serious number that under combined yet here combined is that's a tough -- to -- so it's pretty good art so I Q coming when you say it's to be in the US October about on the West Coast and they're gonna roll out across the country to the rest -- -- are not relevant -- OK -- up over the -- a garage -- -- Check out here this week. We got downstairs in the building where we sit right now yes. You do want -- jobs. Where the Nissan GTRs a fresh review its -- on a car just little couple days ago. And the optima SX Turbo our review and video is about to go up shorting a couple days of the term rovers on the -- -- -- all the optimism and confidence -- and has an optimist. A right now we have a speed yellow Porsche 9/11 GTS that's gonna be fun to talk about next week. And shortly after that we're gonna have a BMW one that. -- and one series in interim -- the -- as an and one which was. The different parties to make. -- let's with the CNET car tech garage and you battery just. Were available so notes -- car tech dot cnet.com. And all of our links out -- off portal past shows -- you -- -- Email us -- your comments or questions car tech at cnet.com. And you could also follow all of Assange would we do pretty good job of keeping -- dispute what we're doing behind the scenes before we get to our shows and reviews each week I'm Brian Cooley BRI agency -- OLEY. Weight is Wayne C underscore SF and was not here breezy and do a NT GO always -- next week. -- -- -- to seeing you next week as well thanks --
