First Look: Canon PowerShot SX40 HS

1:52 /

If you're after a wide and long lens and excellent photo quality, the Canon PowerShot SX40 HS is a standout. In features, design, and performance, though, it's a bit lacking.

Hi there. I am Josh Goban, Senior Editor with CNET and this is Canon's top of the line, full size megazoom, the Powershot SX40 HS. Those familiar with its predecessor, the SX30 IS, might think they're experiencing a bit of deja vu since the two are identical on the outside, has the same wide angled lens with the 35x zoom, same electronic view finder and a rotating 2.7 inch LCD and the same controls. Unfortunately, that means it still lacks a fast way to switch between the EVF and LCD. You have to keep pressing this display button until you get what you want and there is no thumb wheel for more quickly changing shutter speed and aperture. Everything is done with this wheel here. Those things are aren't necessarily deal breakers but they do get in the way of it being more enjoyable to use. Okay. So what is different is that HS part of the name. That refers to the 12 megapixel high speed CMOS sensor and the DIGIC 5 image processor. What that means for you is improved image quality and better shooting performance and the camera does take nice photos even in low light conditions and is a bit faster to shoot, thanks in part to better verse shooting. Still, it's not the fastest megazoom I've tested and likewise, if you're after a lot of control over final results or a lot of gadgetry shooting load options, you'll have to look elsewhere. Those who care mainly about photo quality and having the long long lens though should certainly check it out. I am Josh Goldman and that is a look at the Canon PowerShot SX40 HS.
