First Look: Canon PowerShot SX110 IS

1:36 /

Though it's certainly a good, inexpensive megazoom camera, some aspects of the Canon PowerShot SX110 IS fall a bit short of its predecessor.

[ Music ] ^M00:00:03 >> Hi. I'm Josh Goldman, senior editor for CNET Reviews, and this is the Canon PowerShot SX110IS. It's a megazoom camera, featuring a 10X optical zoom packed in what's considered a compact body for a camera with a lens that large. For the most part, the SX110 is the same as the earlier model, the SX100. The 110 gets a bump in resolution, from eight megapixels to nine megapixels, and a slightly larger LCD. It's now three inches instead of 2.5 inches. Picture quality remains great, some of the best we've seen from a megazoom camera. Unfortunately, its performance is a bit mixed. Its shot-to-shot times are the main problem, averaging about 2.1 seconds without a flash, but jumping up to about five seconds with the flash on. Also, a few of the issues we had with the earlier model are in this newer one as well. For one, since it only uses two double "A" batteries, it goes through batteries pretty quickly, so you want to get some rechargeables. Second, the body is very slippery, especially right in the grip area. And lastly, the 10X zoom doesn't work when you're shooting video, which is kind of a drag. So despite the camera's best in class photo quality, it's spotty performance and other flaws keep it from getting a full recommendation from us. I'm Josh Goldman, and that's the Canon PowerShot SX110IS. ^M00:01:33 [ Music ]
