Making Campbell's soup in a Keurig sounds pretty cumbersome to us (Tomorrow Daily 241)

Culture
On today's show, raspberry pie has a new touch screen to go with it's micro computer. Legendary artist, Glen Keen tries out VR. And bachelors and lonely people, your life just a got a little bit easier. [LAUGH] This is Tomorrow Daily. [MUSIC] Greetings citizens of the internet. Welcome to Tomorrow Daily, the best geek talk show in the known universe. I'm Ashley Esqueda. That's Khail Anonymous in his last final days here at Tomorrow Daily. Yeah the final stretch. The final stretch. Three more shows, including this one and then you're off to the To the beautiful green lands of Yahoo. Sort of like Lord of the Rings where you take the boat But he dies. Or he lives forever. Yeah. [crosstalk] He'll be immortal over at Yahoo. It'll be great. Well -- Well I'm feeling every minute of this, by the way. In a good way. Well everybody's sad to see you go. We got a lot of messages from everybody on Thursday. But if you weren't here on Thursday, Khail is leaving. He's going over to Yahoo. And Thursday is his last day on the show. Which is a pretty big bummer for us but we're also really proud of him. And happy for him. So. Send them your best wishes, and let's hit the headlines. [MUSIC] So you're a big Disneyphile just like me, you know who Glen Keane is. Yeah. Guy's huge, Disney legend. Official Disney legend. Worked on Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin. Some of the second golden era of Disney movies. Pocahontas, i think Tarzan, Tangled. I mean this guy's worked on- Yeah, a real gem. Real real gem. Mentored, the old nine men were his mentors. So, the nine old men, which are very legend at Disney for being amazing animators. Character animator and, he actually left Disney. To go find other ways to tell stories. Like he's been doing some other stuff. I think he did something with Motorola for a while. And now he released this amazing video showing off of animating in virtual reality. Or drawing in virtual reality. This is pretty cool. So this short is called Step Into the Page. And it was made for this summit called The Future of Storytelling. That is held in October in New York City, so this is gonna be a summit that happens. And he actually used an HTC Vibe to create life-sized versions of Ariel and Beauty and the Beast in three dimensions, in a three-dimensional space, in virtual reality. He used the light painting app that you can use on Vibe, that was one of the demos. And he says in this video, he's like, immersing myself in space and drawing is more like a dance. Like he talks about creating in sort of a 3D space and you can see him making all this stuff. It's pretty incredible. It's a really great- Wow! And I really love the idea of this. He makes Ariel and Beast, and they're both so beautifully done of course. And if you think about kind of artists creating things like this in virtual spaces and maybe animating things, finishing sculpting in virtual space. I mean, really the sky's the limit. It really is a testament to the creativity side Virtual reality, not just the gaming, or you know, something real basic like a virtual tour. I mean this is actual creating using virtual reality and this I really love, he kind of moves backwards and then comes forwards as he's done with Ariel and you can see sort of the dimension of him, yeah there you go of him walking through towards, through the bubbles. Wow. Going to check out Ariel in 3D. Pretty awesome, so cool. I read a lot of the comments on the YouTube video. Sometimes I'll watch a video and then read the comments. And everyone was just like, this is so inspiring, this is really incredible. It's great. I'm so glad that people are Seeing VR for uses like this, Yeah. Instead of like I don't know, ridiculous tours of the Grand Canyon or something like that. Yeah I mean this is I mean I know James Cameron is probably not happy about [UNKNOWN], I hope people are following that storyline. I hope so too, yeah yeah. Of us crapping on Yeah, Jacob's cameras. It's a real through line of our show, James Cameron hating. But really cool, very, very cool. So awesome. Just love seeing stuff like that and that really just sort of opens anybody, it could open a kid's mind right now after seeing that video. Some kid who's gonna be a legendary animator in virtual reality someday might of just been inspired by seeing that. And I love that idea, so. Awesome. Great work. Good job, kid. Future of Storytelling, that's the name of the summit. I think you should keep tabs on it. I think it's the first weekend in October. All right, so check this. THis next story is not inspiring. No. Totally not inspiring, and wont' inspire a kid to go be a beautiful artist. [LAUGH] Because Keurig and Campbell have teamed up to make eating soup Easier? [LAUGH] I don't know, but anyway, so here's the idea. Keurig and Campbell's soup has decided to make these little pods so that you can basically just, well, you have to put in like a pack, and then you put in a little Campbell's soup thing on the top, and then you close it. And then, just like with your coffee, you press the button and it makes soup. And then it, like, sits there. There's some caveats, though, for some reason. It seems really weird. Yeah, so you [INAUDIBLE], you have to let it sit for two minutes to kind of broth. And it just, look- The noodles gotta soften up, okay. All right, all right. Look, yeah, it has to soften up and it has to kind of sit there and it's- Congeal, I don't. And it's not like a giant can of Soup. Like, so basically- That little cup doesn't look like a lot of soup. Yeah, and then they also recommend that you run a hot water cycle through it first. There's a lot of work to make this tech work. It is interesting that they're finding new uses for the Keurig. They always try and find new uses for the Keurig. But, so an 8 pack costs $12. That's a lot of money. That is a lot of money. I can buy one can of soup- It's more than $1 a soup- Yeah for like a buck, or $0.69, depending on the soup. And you can toss a can of soup in the microwave for about two minutes. And it's done. You can just enjoy it immediately. You don't have to wait. So- And you'd also have to run that hot water cycle after, so that your coffee then did not taste like soup. You don't want soup coffee. That is, chicken broth flavored coffee. That sounds disgusting Disgusting. So there you go. We just thought you'd wanna see this tech. This is one of those stories that you would talk about to start conversations. Yeah. Good icebreaker. Hey, did you hear this stupid thing? Did you hear this most ridiculous thing I've ever heard of? But, yeah, I mean, It's, I mean they're trying stuff. I'll give them that. Yeah, but. But honestly, if you're doing soup this way, bachelor or lonely person, maybe just get a can of soup. Microwave. Recycle the can though. So there you go. Yeah, microwave. I think we vote microwave. We're team microwave. Team microwave! Team radiate your food. It's radiation right? Yeah. Sure. All right, let's talk about Pi Touch. This is pretty cool. So we talk a lot about Raspberry Pi on the show. Inexpensive- It's awesome. Microcomputer, super great. People use it to experiment, DIY, they put together all sorts of crazy, great stuff. Well now there's an official 7-inch touchscreen that you can buy, that goes with the Raspberry Pi. Get out of here! So this is a touchscreen that you'll be able to buy and set up with your Raspberry Pi. You'll be able to use it. I found this video on MCM Electronics, they're really good on boxing, so I decided to use this as sort of the B roll over it. It runs off of one USB power source, it is unfortunately, the resolution, a little low. It's 800 X 480, so you're definitely not gonna be watching HD movies and stuff off it. Okay, well, you shouldn't be, but go ahead. But it I think it would make a really great control panel, cuz it's a seven [INAUDIBLE]. You could do a great control panel, maybe for your lighting. You could, for internet things, connect smarthome or you could use it as a really basic tablet, like maybe that would be a cool thing to use it as. Yeah. This was a big hurdle for raspberry pies. You're going have to hook it up to something to access any of the, being able to do anything on it at all. Right. This, now I feel like I can have a little bit more of an access point, cause I'm still not a genius. No, that's true though. It does give a little bit more accessibility to people who are maybe coming into it and not really deeply ingrained in that culture. Like somebody who wants to get started And also, it sports ten finger touch, so it's not exactly a, you know, a primitive sort of touch screen. It's actually a pretty good touch screen in the sense of ten finger touch. Did you say how much it was? Cuz Raspberry Pi's real cheap. Like, you know, 30 bucks, right? 25, 30 bucks. Huh. This is only $60 for the [INAUDIBLE]. Jeez. And that's the point, they want people to get involved. You can see they're running, right there, they're running programs on this. And it's 60 bucks so that means that you can actually get a tiny micro computer and a touchscreen for less that $100. So that you can And program it to do incredible things. And program it to do whatever you want, which is pretty cool. Look at that, I'd probably just use it as a calculator. A tip calculator like in Seinfeld. Listen, for under $100 that's actually less than a whatchamacallit calculator. A scientific calculator from high school. Wait a minute. Can I turn this into a [INAUDIBLE] boy? You might be able to drop that right into your, if you can get the app and maybe side load the APK, the Fallout APK, into that, maybe through [UNKNOWN], you might be able to do it. I would go look. I would ask some people online, cuz you might be able to put a raspberry pie into your Pip Boy when you get your collector's edition your Fallout four. Ooh that's a really good point. Well played. All right guys we're gonna take a quick break. Kale's gonna try to figure that out while we do a quick commercial. When we come Come back, we are going to talk about new releases, of which there are many, movies and games this week. [APPLAUSE] And then we're going to talk about Kale leaving some more. Which you see that it's all about Kale, it's all about Kale this week. And then we have Phone Talker for the day to cheer you up right before we go. So don't click away, it's Tomorrow Daily. [MUSIC] Welcome back to the show. Sadly we have realized that it's a seven inch touchscreen, which means they did mention that you couldn't even fit the 6+ in there, so I don't think we'll be fitting that. But, smaller screens are always available. Yeah, we'll figure it out. I'll figure it out. Kale's going to make that work, you should definitely keep your eyes. And if you're a Raspberry Pi enthusiast. Please feel free to get a hold of Kale on Twitter. Help me out. Yeah help him out. All right guys. It's Tuesday. We like to talk about all this stuff that's gonna be draining our wallet. This is new releases. [MUSIC] A lot of games a lot of movies this week. Right you hit them at six Six new releases it's a lot. SIx. Ok go! All right, first up Destiny, The Taken King. Expansion, huge expansion for Destiny. People really excited about this. I've seen an uncountable number of my friends on Twitter saying "Oh, I'm re-rolling" or "I'm starting over, I'm getting back into it." People are re-rolling? People are re-rolling man. Oh, it's a good time for me then. So, like people are pretty excited about this, Bungee seems to have done a really great job. They've got Vanilla North, we talked about this, now replacing Peter Dinklage. A lot of people think that he's done a better job so. Of course, he's Nolan Norse. Well and he didn't phone it in. So that's probably also a key reason why. Yes, so if you're interested in the Destiny expansion, a lot of people are saying good things about it and I might try it out. I might have to try that out. Also available today Forza Motorsports 6. Forza, if you love driving cars, you love realistic graphics. Yeah. Mechanics, physics. I mean this is really one of the games for you, and you've got an Xbox One, you've got to buy this game. Like that's, it's a must. God, these racing games look so good now. They look so good, it's really unbelievable. And that's- Don't forget, if you're really good at Forza, you could end up being, like actually racing cars. If you remember that earlier story->> Right. And they had to have that whole tournament thing to have that bracket where it's like if you're really really good at it then they'll Take you to the university and then they'll teach you how to drive a real racecar and all that stuff. And they're all winning too. This is all in game footage by the way. They note that on the bottom left. Between this and GTA, I can't tell what's real and fake. It's so true. Okay. Gaming wise also, lastly, we have Grand Theft Auto free mode. Speaking of which. Speaking of GTA. Logan, how do you feel? So excited. Pumped! He's gonna load it up tonight I hear. Yeah, yeah. He's gonna load this up. Freemode Events. I know that producer Logan is probably the most into Grand Theft Auto Five out of all three of us. He thinks he's in it right now. I think probably he is. But like he always says it's really frustrating new heists because if one thing is wrong you have to start all over again. Recruit everybody. There's a lot of steps to do heists, and that can be really frustrating. But now, you just jump in. Free mode, get out there, go nuts, have fun. I think everybody is really excited about this who plays Grand Theft Auto. Right, I know, I think I'm going to jump back in too. Why not? Cuz I'm done with Metal Gear Solid so. You are more than done with Metal Gear. I swear to god, it has to be 70 hours now. That's It's a lot of them. It's so stupid. Let's move to the next one. Okay. Let's talk about movies. So there's three really good movies coming out this weekend. Everest, which is the Jake Gyllenhaal movie about the guys who climbed up and there's an avalanche and all of a sudden it's a story of survival, like all this stuff. I hate these real world disaster movies that are like recreations of things that actually happened, cuz it freaks me out. Cuz they go over the [UNKNOWN]. OH! So it's gorgeous. Yeah, and a lot of people die. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And the [UNKNOWN] is gorgeous, [UNKNOWN] I'm sure, an inspiring tale, for anybody to watch, and then, Johnny Depp apparently back to form, people are giving him great notices, after many many flops. Black Mass is coming out, played Whitey Bulger. I'm excited about this. People are saying very good performance. From him. Very, very good, they were very impressed. I still think maybe, just a little bit, he's still a weirdo in make-up. Yeah. Like he's playing a weirdo, like the dark weirdo, like a evil weirdo, instead of a kind-hearted weirdo. [LAUGH] So, but, yeah, see, apparently he does very well in this. People are really excited. And if you love gangster movies, this is probably a good one to see. And then also Sicario comes out this weekend, which is about the drug trade and Emily Blunt's in it. She plays an agent that kind of wants to get into the field of like all the drug cartels, the drug wars and stuff. So she's like DEA, and it looks really good. People are saying good things about it. I'd love to go see it. I probably, if I had a pick out of all three, this is the one I'd probably go see. Really? Yeah, I think I'd pick this one. [CROSSTALK] What about you producer Logan? Black mass. Yeah see that was Black Mass. I think I'd see Sicario. I like these kinds of movies that are like sort of like intense. That one looks like it's gonna fall completely under the radar. You think so? Oh yeah. I've seen a lot of billboards for it. Yeah. One Emily Blunt's pretty great. She was so good in Edge of Tomorrow. I like her as like an action. Yeah nobody knows that because nobody saw it. I know I really like Towards like an action. She's actually really good as like kind of an action hero which is pretty cool so. I know she's super hot as an action person. Yeah she is it's true. I know I get you. All right guys so from the highest of the highs great things come out this week to the lowest of lows. We gotta talk about Kale leaving it's time for user feedback. [MUSIC] [UNKNOWN] Oh, it almost look like the triforce, triforce born. I got an upboat burn. Upboat burn, yay! Yeah. [LAUGH] It's so bad. So good. Okay, so we asked you guys last week do you TD recycle, but most people just wanted to talk TD kill. Which is fine by us. So we'll just go with TD Khail all week this week we're gonna talk about TD Khail. That's our hash tag of the week. The week of Khail. Paz wrote in to us and said, been great having you on #TomorowDaily. You will be missed. Best of luck at yahoo. Thanks Paz. Jesus wrote in. Long time listener. Oh yeah, Jesus. He says, fast forwarded to the end just to see what the news was. Congrats and much success! Can't wait to watch! hashtag goodhuman. Could've watched the whole show. Well, maybe he went, I'm sure he went back and watched the rest of the show. But he was so eager to know what the big news was that he Oh. Oh that's cool. Thanks. Yeah, and then Kevin wrote in said, noooooooo good luck you'll be missed. All one sentence. He didn't have enough characters, he could have put more O's. Put some more. More O's. But yeah, so that's our user feedback. That's the hashtag today. Send Khail Your sun kill, your well wishes, your fondest memories of him on the show. You really make it sound like I'm dead or dying. Yeah, well you're dead to us. You leave. We'll lock the doors and your face is gonna go up on a poster. Can you put a little tiny gravestone? I'll put a little tombstone in the back. It'll be great. Okay, I was gonna say, coffin's a little too To, it's too you. Too real. Very macabre. A little headstone. What do you want your headstone in the shape of? A pizza? Yeah. Can you do that? I'll sculpt that this weekend. That's what this is. It's a pizza burn. It's an upside down pizza pointed at your face. That's what it is. Tiny pizza burn. All right, [INAUDIBLE] So yeah, send in your well wishes. You can also tag Khail on Twitter at @khailanonymous. Okay, so let's talk about our last piece of user feedback, which is always our phonetographer of the day. [MUSIC] Dear listener Mike wrote in and he said, Hey your guys, I'm really said to hear the Kale will be leaving for Yahoo. You two have great chemistry together and I watch the show everyday! Anyway, I thought I'd share these photos with you. They are taken in my backyard. I planted some flower seeds months ago and finally some are starting to blossom. It's a great feeling to see your own stuff grow into something beautiful These flowers are your goodbye gift, Mr. Anonymous. Aw. Good luck at Yahoo. Not even dead flowers, like not even plucked. No, they're living, no this is a metaphor, you're gonna plant something at Yahoo, and then you're gonna feel good when it sprouts out of the ground and becomes beautiful flowers just like this. That is so cool of him to have done this. Weighty. I will say that the iPhone 6 takes real good color photographs. It does, it does, although, I mean the Note takes some good saturated, like you get a little more saturation of the, like the Note. You have something they've tweaked. Yeah, but who has big enough pockets to carry the Note? That's true. Good point. Says the guy that has the iPhone 6 Plus. [LAUGH] I was gonna say, you've got an iPhone 6 Plus, it was crazy. But yeah, so if you guy wanna send in your phonetography this week, or any other time, and I'm gonna tell you about what we're gonna do with the show for the two weeks we'll be kind of weirdly on hiatus. You can email us, tomorrow@cnet.com, send in what device you took it with, give us permission to use it on the show, and tell us a little story about it, or write a little email, tell us about yourself. Cuz we like you. All right, so, if you wanna send somebody to show us some tomorrowdaily.com, I'm ashleyesqueda on Twitter. I'm @khailanonymous on Twitter. And here's what's gonna be happening. So, after Thursday, we have two weeks where we're gonna do Tomorrow Daily mini and Logan and I will be producing a short version of the show where it's just me and I'm gonna ell you some weird Future Tech news and pop culture. So it's gonna be basically like a little condensed version of the show, from our new studio location, but not on our new set yet cause it's not finished. And then during that time we'll be introducing our new co-host, which is very exciting. I'm excited and you should be too. Because, I mean, it's gonna be hard to fill Kale's shoes, but I think we did a good job. I think we did a serviceable job. Right on. And I'm really, I'm really freaking excited about it. Cool. So, we're going to be doing that and then right around October 5th, so right around the first week of October, depending on construction of the set, we'll be relaunching the show. Maybe making some new graphics. Maybe some new stuff. Maybe some new. Wait, what about Genghis? Genghis will always be with us. Okay that's good. Genghis will be with us. We're actually gonna steal your soul and we're gonna put in there. So that you'll also always be on the set with us all the time. But that's what's happening with the schedule. I'm going to remind you guys of that everyday. Cuz some people only watch one day a week. Or kinda catch the show here and there as they can. But that's it for the show. We'll be back tomorrow with a brand new docket, weird wonderful science facts, science fiction, geek culture, and gaming. All pushing together in your face like a big ol warm big hug, but until then be good humans, see you next time. Bye. [MUSIC]
