This camera won't let you take cliche pictures (Tomorrow Daily 242)

On today's show, an astronaut controls a rover here on Earth, as he is up in the International Space Station. A camera that won't let you take cliche pictures, looking at you, Instagram! And you can now take a tour of Tony Stark's tower without having to break in. Woo, I like that. Don't have to break in anymore! All right! Tomorrow Daily! [MUSIC] Greetings citizens of the Internet and welcome to Tomorrow Daily. The best geek talk show in the known universe. I'm Ashley Esqueda, that's Khail Anonymous, for his pen ultimate episode. Yeah. I think it's called an abbey. Or a martini. Sure. Second to last shot. Second to last shot, yeah. That's a Hollywood term, kids. Yeah. We love our inside baseball here at Tomorrow Daily. And then, for us, we're gonna be doing miniature episodes of Tomorrow Daily starting next Monday We're gonna be doing like little kind of 5 to 10 minute tiny TV basically, is what it's gonna be. Yeah you guys aren't taking a break. What are you guys gonna like cook up a lot of stuff I guess. No breaks. I see a lot like, you guys are working on a lot of things. Yeah. Should be really fun. Yeah but let's not worry about that now. Let's hit the headlines. [MUSIC] All right Khail, how many times How many times have you been to like a tourist spot, and you just see everybody taking the exact same picture. Oh, like the Leaning Tower of Pisa, where-- Everybody's doing the thing. And they look stupid. That's just tourism, though. So, like The Hollywood, you go to Grauman's Chinese Theatre, and like everybody's doing the same thing. Everybody's taking pictures of everything, it's kind of dumb. And it's like, okay, we've seen this picture a million times. Yeah, get a life. Google it online. So this is pretty interesting, there's a German designed named Philipp Schmitt. They made a new camera, designer made a new camera. This camera is actually an app This is, Carina's using this in Copenhagen. This is pretty cool. She's gonna use this camera called Camera Restricta. And basically it's an app inside a 3D printed enclosure that will look at your GPS It will look at your coordinates, wherever you are in the world, and it will find out how many pictures, it will search the Internet to find out how many pictures have been geotagged in that location. And if there's too many, it won't let you take a picture. [LAUGH] It's like, nope. So, it's crazy. So, this, so it says 24 pictures, it says yes, you can take a picture, so there you go. Only 16 pictures here, yes. You can take a photo here, totally fine, but if not, it will actually, the shutter right there, the red shutter, will actually just retract into the camera. You can't push the shutter down. It's like, forget about it. Nope, see here. Watch. Look at. She gonna take a picture? Oh. Nope, nevermind. Not gonna do it. Deal with it, lady. You're not taking a picture here So there is actually a sound effect too they were pointing at the speaker. It actually sounds like a Geiger counter. So the closer you get to like radioactive photo locations like think places where you don't wanna shoot. It gets more crackly. It sounds louder in Geiger counter. It's pretty great. [LAUGH] So. It's like half heart breaking. I know. Oh my god, I'm so happy, I'm on vacation, aw. I'm gonna take so many pictures. Oh, nevermind, I'm not. So, this place, yeah, for photography prohibited. Just period. They're not, I'm not even gonna tell you how many pictures they take, too many pictures. Forget about it. No. Not gonna happen, but she does talk about something really interesting that I thought was very poignant and artistic of her. She did mention She said, I find it really interesting that I feel the responsibility of taking either the first picture in a location where it says there's never been something geo tagged there before, which is pretty amazing. And then also she says If I take a picture in a location that has, let's say a couple hundred pictures, or whatever, she's like, it might be the last picture I get to take there. With that camera, I might get to take only one picture and then the shutter goes, okay that's too many. You've hit the cap. So I have this artistic responsibility to be more discerning about the shots that I take. And I thought that was really cool and weird, so weird but also so great. And funny. And honestly when I thought about the app, I would love to be able on Instagram to be able to see. I know you can look at the photo map, but I'd love to be able to choose the location, if you check in somewhere, and there's a little counter that tells you how many pictures have been posted on Instagram from this location. I'd actually find that data really interesting. I don't know. You're like 'I don't even know how to respond to this.' I'm so scared. Hey, show me all the photos from your trip. This is in an alley way. I'm like 'This is inside a grocery store. This is inside a hotel room.' She walked by a gym, and then she was like 'why can't I take pictures here. And she turned around and she couldn't figure it out for a second. Then she turns around and she goes Oh, gym selfies. I got it, and then she kept walking. She was like, why can't I take a picture right here in this weird part of the street? Like, I don't understand? Then she turns around and there's a big gym back there. I like it, I think it's funny. Pretty cool. It's very funny. It's open source, the app is open source if you're interested. And there's, we'll put the link To the project page over on our show notes. I think it would be almost funnier to send somebody that didn't know That the camera wouldn't work? Yeah. That didn't know. Yeah. I think she was surprised at some of the spots, maybe, that she was going to that she couldn't take a picture. But yea. Camera restricta. Pretty interesting. Okay, so, let's talk about going someplace where I'm sure there's a lot of selfies taken by Tony Stark. Oh, yeah. Of course. But, I worked so hard on that transition. Anyway You did. Let's talk about this Tony Stark VR because now There's the VR simulation where you can check out Stark Tower. Not officially from Disney, so enjoy this while you can. Enjoy it while it lasts, kids. Okay, so this is from Trek Industries. They made this VR experience. Oh my God, look at how beautiful that is. It is really pretty. It's not animated or nothing. Cuz Disney would make it animated. So this is an unofficial VR tour. It's gonna be a free experience. It's not a game. It's not like Tony, you're not like actually Iron man or anything. Yeah. Okay. You'll be able to play it on the ocular swift and the vibe, so, you know Okay. the best at Very good and you can just freely roam around the building and check it out. Man, it looks so good. I'm sorry. It does look pretty good. So, again This isn't, this isn't official. Okay. So they may just get a cease and desist. [LAUGH] In a matter of, [CROSSTALK] before I finish the end of this sentence, cease and desist. Just like squishing in the bud. But yeah, it's from Stark Industries. It's really cool. We just thought we'd show it off. Yeah. Do they, so, ok. Let's say in a perfect world, hypothetically speaking, let's say maybe Disney's like, this is really cool. We'll sanction this as an unofficial thing, but we'll allow you to do it if you give it away for free. Like To promote like a new movie. I guess so. Like do you think they would change it or make it like make it better or like maybe they'll expand it? Maybe they'll add more. Maybe they'll put Tony Stark's lab underneath [CROSSTALK]. I think like yeah. I mean they all ready have I have a bunch of Ironman VRs. I think we tried it out over at Disneyland or something. Yeah, where it's like you're shooting. Yeah, you're like Ironman. [CROSSTALK] I can see them definitely doing this. That would be cool. Actually picking this up. But we'll see because Disney may just be like, we'll- [CROSSTALK] Or maybe they're already doing it and we don't know and they're just like, listen guys We really appreciate what you're doing here, but you've got to stop that. Like, just don't do that again. It is kinda weird though that it's Stark Tower, and there is no more Stark Tower in the Avengers movie-- But then it's also like Trek industries, like Star Trek, there's a lot of weirdness happening. Just forget you heard that article all together. Yeah, especially if you're at Disney. Don't Plug your ears. It's really bad. All right, I've gotta tell you about this, because I thought this was a sort of a tremendous accomplishment, because of how much distance the information has travelled. So, there's an astronaut named Andreas Mogensen, I hope it's Mogensen and not Mojans, onboard the ISS. Up there right now. And, this astronaut Controlled a robot here on Earth from the ISS and complete a very precise task of putting a peg in a hole. So, super interesting stuff here. Yeah, usually it's the other way around. Usually it's the other way around. So, they took advantage of the astronauts up in the ISS to test out some Rover controlling. And this a European space agency effort. You can see everybody kind of working on this. And so Andreas used a control system that allowed him to manipulate this robot right here, which is named Interact Centaur, and it has force feedback on it so he was able to, like if the robot's arm felt resistance, he was able to feel it up on the ISS Which is pretty cool and so the signal, here's where it gets really impressive in terms of the signal. The signal had to travel from the artifact to orbiting satellites then through the satellite to To NASA Houston, to a ground station in New Mexico, then under the Atlantic via a cable, to the ESA center, and then back because data has to go back to the ISS so that Andreas knows what's going on with the robot. So round trip, that's over 89,000 miles. That's some crazy lag, yeah. Yeah, so here is, working on it. Hope his ping wasn't too high. First attempt. Yeah ping so high, ugh, so much lag. First attempt on this took 45 minutes to do this very precise task. You can see, that's not a large peg. This is a very small, precise task and the task was to put this peg into a little hole. That's it. And he was able to do it in 45 minutes the first time, but then the second time he did it in 10 minutes. Really quickly- Oh, wow! All things considered. So, the point of this being, as you like to say, what's the goal here? Yeah, what is the goal here? The goal here is, this is great for astronauts actually here on earth to control rovers to, say, build a moon base, to control rovers on Mars, to clean space trash in space without an astronaut being present. A lot of different things astronauts can do with robots That people can not necessarily go do. You got it. You got it? Come on. Come on. You feel a sense of anxiety that it's not gonna happen and it totally does which is pretty awesome. I don't know why they decided this backdrop was necessary. This got this huge moon backdrop put in. But I love it. I love that they really got into it, that they printed it and made it look kinda realistic. But yeah, there it is, right in the proper hole there, the peg went in. And he did it, great work, ESA. But yeah, pretty amazing stuff. Yeah, very cool. They were able to get that done and- Our backdrops better, though, yo. I think we might ask ESA to borrow the moving background, maybe do that on our Our new studio. Now, that looks real. Look how real that is. I'm just saying. You can feel that [UNKNOWN]. You don't know what planet that is, that could be anywhere. This could be in the Kepler system. We could have, this could be a Kepler planet. It's in the Esqueda system. Yeah, maybe it's in the Esqueda system. It's just in a galaxy that has not yet been named. We don't know. It could look exactly like this. There's a planet made of diamond. Like raw diamond maybe it looks like that and it's just not orange. Let's be completely honest. This is just a planet that I'm pretty sure Logan thought up. Yeah. It's something he saw in like Tron. So Ben Carpenter unfortunately has spinal muscular atrophy which confines him to a wheelchair. So there he is in his wheel chair. It's like a sort of a Standing thing. He did not let that get in the way of building easily one of the best cosplays I've ever personally seen. Which is right there. He is playing Mad Max chained to the front of the car. And that's his wheelchair, like he used his wheelchair and built a whole rig, Mad Max rig around it and was like I'm gonna be Tom Hardy as Mad Max. Like hanging from the front of the car, because I'm the best. Yeah. And my last name is [UNKNOWN] Incredible in every sense of the word. Pretty much every way, like, I mean, man if you're ever feeling like you're having a bad day just look at that guys picture I'd feel better immediately if I was having a bad day. I'd be like wow this guy Awesome, you're my favorite. The thing is, I've just seen people put less work into their cosplay just in general. It was a really well made cosplay, a mask and- Super well made. He's got tons of pictures over on his Instagram, so if you go to Bloody_Ben, that's his Instagram. And he's got a bunch of pictures there, and he Some of the details are really impressive. Can we see the one just of him? Yeah, like you said, the detail is really impressive on this. Like, he didn't just- They built a car behind him. Yeah and he had the car behind him. And then he had the wives next to him. Yeah, it was really great. Yeah, there are the wives. They are the wifes, they have a whole thing going. I mean, what a smash hit this guy was. I mean, I would have loved to take pictures of this guy. Great job, Ben Carpenter.
