Buzz Report: Tragedy on Mars

Culture
Hi, I'm Molly Wood, and welcome to the Buzz Report. This week, gambling on borrowed time, tragedy on Mars, and puppies. But first, it?s the Gadget of the Week. The Gadget of the Week is the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1. It?s the latest smart phone for us to get all excited about, with a touch screen and this cool interactive panel interface that you can totally customize, a slideout QWERTY keyboard, the new and improved Windows Mobile OS, 3G AND 3.5G, for super fast data speeds, GPS, of course, Wi-Fi, of course, all kinds of awesome, of course. Unlocked GSM, so you can use it with T-Mobile or AT&T. Really, it?s just ? well. Here?s the thing. It?s 800 dollars. Yeah. In this economy, right? I know. So, it?s the new hotness, yeah, but only if you?re like, one of those evil hedge fund people with a bajillion dollars in your pocket. You guys will love it. And now for the news. The Bush Administration is SCRAMBLING to extend a 2006 ban on Internet gambling before it leaves. And the White House employee writing the rules use to be a lobbyist for the NFL. The NFL LOVES the ban because they don?t have any competition for its fantasy football leagues, AND they have an exemption FROM the ban to run those leagues. But Democrats say that if we legalized and REGULATED online gambling, we could make billions of dollars, which, you know, we could kind of use. Because it?s not like there?s LESS online gambling happening, it?s just that the U.S. isn?t hosting or collecting taxes on any of it. So, to sum up, you?ll probably still have to do all your online gambling on sketchy sites hosted in Malaysia so that we can go on ahead and bail out the NFL. COME ON, people. In other news this week, the latest World of Warcraft expansion pack, Wrath of the Lich King, hit the shelves on Thursday. And thank goodness, because I do indeed need a new world to inhabit. Speaking of other worlds, sad news from space this week. The MarsPhoenix lander, which has been Twittering to us from the surface of Mars about its progress with digging, discovering ice, and slowly freezing to death, has tweeted out its last. It sent out one last message on Monday, November 10 ? a binary string that spelled Triumph. Phoenix Mission Ops used the Twitter account to post a tribute video to the lander. Blatant anthropomorphizing of an ultimately doomed piece of machinery and a cruel reminder that space is cold, dark, and heartless. Ouch. Well-played, NASA SADISTS. Oh, and it turns out the Spirit rover might also be dead or dying, due to a giant dust storm. At least that one didn?t have a Twitter account. Seriously, people, somebody?s going to start like, a PETA organization to protect Mars rovers from these callous death sentences. And now, let?s have a look at what?s Clogging the Tubes. Now, just to be clear, our Clogging the Tubes segment is frequently determined by this measurement: Dude, everyone I KNOW has sent me this link! That?s how it is with the Shiba Inu Puppy Cam. It?s a real-time ustream video feed of a bunch of puppies. A lot of the time, they sleep. Some of the time, they wrestle and bite each others? bellies and attack their own bed. ALL the time? They are so adorable I might pee. OMG, their little whimpers? I need a puppy. AND that's the Buzz Report for this week, everybody! I'm Molly Wood and thanks for watching.
