CNET Update: Blue-light glitch taints PS4's hot launch

Sony says only a small percentage of PlayStation 4s are defective, Kindle Fire tablets get new features, and Slingbox flings video to Roku for easy sharing of live or recorded TV shows.

The Red Ring of Death has a friend, the Blue Line of Death. I'm Bridget Carey and this is your CNET Update. More than a million PlayStation 4 consoles were sold in the first 24 hours. It went on sale in North America but the successful launch of the new system was not a flawless victory. Many owners have complained on Sony's support forms about malfunctioning PS4s that flash a blue light and crash or fail to boot up. Some users have posted videos of the problem on YouTube, calling it a blue pulsing light of death. Some are reporting a red light and that indicates that system is overheating, which could be because the fan isn't turning on. Sony says it expected some glitches at launch and the number of defective systems is less than .4 percent of all shipped PS4s, which comes to about 4,000 systems. It will go on sale in Europe and Latin America next week, on November 29th. Now, this is a big year for video game consoles and not just Sony and Microsoft, there are several systems out for playing Android games on your home TV. One of which is the OUYA. There's a new limited edition version of the OUYA in white. It costs $130 and it has doubled the storage capacity, jumping it up to 16 gigs. The original model is just 30 bucks less. OUYA owners can try more than $500 downloadable games for free before buying. The new Amazon Fire Tablets just got a little cooler. The software update available now gives the Fire HD and the Fire HDX. Several new features including integration with the Goodreads, social network of book lovers, so, you can easily share what you're reading with your friends. For watching video, the Kindle Fire HDX can fling shows and movies off the tablet to the television using a PlayStation 3, a PlayStation 4 or Samsung TV. There's also wireless printing, voice dictation and easy online archiving to free up your storage space. You can download the update now or it will be delivered automatically to the tablet in the coming weeks. The Slingbox is also getting some new perks. Slingbox connects to your home cable box and it lets you stream live or recorded shows from your cable box to your laptop, your tablet or your smartphone with the Slingbox app. Now, the mobile app costs $15 and it's been updated with a new interface and improves surge, but there's another more useful perk. If you have a Roku in the home, a Slingbox app can stream a program from the cable box to another TV with a Roku. So, you don't need to pay for two cable boxes or two DVRs in your home. It can even stream a show from your home to a Roku in someone else's house. That's your tech news update but you could find more details on the show blog CNET.com/update.
