Best of BOL: IBM Turns 100, Laser Jellyfish and Facebook Guns for Apple.

Culture
Hey guys welcome to the best. A buzz allowed our weekly digest of this week's buzz allows shows. On this week's episode can you believe it 100 years of IBM milestones they were responsible for treating things like the personal computer. And laser eye surgery you guys can see me nice and clear. Now scientists also combining a human cell and a jelly fish into a living laser which we'll help out raids across the world. And FaceBook is armed with html five and going after Apple so sit back and enjoy the best of buzz -- out. It is the 100 birthday of IBM. -- -- a hundred and all he's seen yet. They're celebrating a hundred and a hundredth anniversary of its founding. It was led by American capitalist icon Thomas. And I actually got this really useful press release. When our elders say idea about -- -- -- written plea yesterday at that really awesome press release about the four point watch. Flow is relevant and important to network and -- Maybe it would have been if we had and gadgets of but this -- did -- -- of the gave me a bunch of bullet -- about what IBM is responsible for example -- things you know at the personal computer obviously. It was an Apple everyone who has backed the idea. That I'm sure their personal computer took up a wall ranked by Leslie -- a room into a room night and all right. Military grade computers back and they took a -- -- -- Seriously it was not messing around big they did like a computer punch card thing to the first electric electric key punch and all kinds of things -- of the major things that they put in our in the press release. The personal computer laser eye surgery although neither of none of Allen and -- -- -- -- I never. I actually went up and millionaires -- ram hard drives a bar codes and magnetic -- among of course many many many other inventions. While they're basically like the patent machine. They're checked this out so on this article that we have in our links that PC world you can check out the -- points in 1975. The IBM 5100 portable computer enters the market -- Fifty pounds. Priced at 9000 it's when he thousand dollars wow and that's traded yeah I mean there's a ton of really global appoint the guys in checked out by -- at some meetings up and also IBM the mind behind Watson. Yet -- you know we did mention that the jeopardy champion. They're still they're still going -- Don't -- also I have to say. That one of the best business but that ever read is about IBM's Bob who says who says elephants can't dance about Lou Gerstner. Who came in as CEO -- really turnaround IBM at a time and it was really wondering it's is that. It's and fascinating book about IBM. But it also super interesting. In terms of does business and culture. They just random little but a lot -- nominee. That I really like -- -- it -- the buzz -- book club right Alicia did I really like that but but so anyway happy birthday I am. Ports are leaking out on -- techcrunch and gives -- and others about Facebook's new top secret. Project. Designed at undermining. IOS devices and Apple. With html five a project -- Yes so what they're hoping -- -- do they have somewhere around eighty developers on board and they've also partnered with outside game developers their hope. Is no longer will people be going directly to the FaceBook app NI OS five and they're doing this first. A -- you know targeting the Apple platform but they would go to a mobile version of FaceBook that is optimize and hopefully works. Exactly like their current iPhone app now the other hope with this is that. They can -- it. By still using the iPhone -- a platform for people to go to by bypassing the App Store Apple's own App Store who takes cuts. Where they can then run transaction using FaceBook credits sure we've seen that hasn't really taken off they. They're still trying to figure -- monetize that are being more successful in having people do more you know pristine apps but. You know so much of the activity that's going on -- -- is in the mobile space this makes complete sense and we've seen how other relationship with Apple become more more contentious. You know back when ping was announced the rules like lies -- FaceBook integrated and Apple had said. You know their terms are too onerous -- -- commit to them. Then we see -- -- -- announcement Twitter was integrated directly into the -- and not face button so you console. Clearly be although they are on the same text based and there are some overlaps they're not they're not clean friends and this is a wafer FaceBook to move around them in that way. I have to say I like this because you've heard me talk a -- about how I think app stores contribute to the balkanization of the mobile space in general -- mean this is not necessarily have. I think html five can solve a lot of Napster balkanization issues and I like the fact that they're working on html five based platform. Although it should certainly not be mistaken for anything that would be. Like an open web on mobile right it's basically just -- -- for them. Possibly letting you go up. Well let me blueberry -- -- suburban. You know what really should've -- -- -- and it. You -- can we need to break that we need a break then -- the blueprint a thank you -- -- anyone in the building of listening you can break Herman noticed them in mountain. Home we're equally police and others -- -- more include politically cup. However. It shouldn't be mistaken in any way for some kind of like open web movement and clearly but it would possibly break the stranglehold like they say. On mobile app distribution within Apple and -- part of -- the whole plan to Canada has become the -- and a web outlook to how like. Each -- off -- -- Steve Jobs big push right that was the initial thing for killing flash has yet to really make sure a small size being. Push forward from all the different content providers and now they're like okay we're ready for html five and now we're gonna use it to destroy. Yeah -- any which. Enough that I really I liked the idea but I think obviously there's an elect few major challenges one of them is people -- the general consumer that's been so dependent on the app. For them to all -- you know whether they announce the -- go use our mobile version of the site it pass the really work. Exactly like or even better than the mobile app that they already have right now for people to migrate over in the the second thing is still -- -- at the point where. A game like. -- Angry Birds or even other games that they're trying to -- in these game developers to be part of this transition. Are they going to be as robust than will be self contained games really run exactly the same on an -- -- -- by version. -- you a recommendation. You hate not but not old but not all the games would be able to do you know there's some simpler games like we've seen Angry Birds be -- -- transition. The Chrome browser wouldn't you know I think it's going to -- -- -- five but there's other types of games that. -- -- I would I would be a little -- to say that it's gonna run just as smoothly or beat you know just a full featured as it as a dedicated app on its own. There's there is zero reason technically speaking zero reason why it shouldn't be so open and run as well -- But -- -- -- no I'm I'm not even like more advanced games -- run on your phone. That FaceBook would offer. You just -- -- makes him out by browser via simple games yes but not more advanced games zero everything you've seen all games across the board to run perfectly -- -- to I think there's no technical reason why they can't. Like html five it was designed from the ground up to be that replacement there was the -- is that I'm not and I'm not saying that they you know it it will take an engineering. Effort but so -- apps and apps in fact -- -- more of an engineering effort because you happen to being right now. App based biggest thing -- at Apple -- -- -- your old html five -- against you read we're gonna try to undermine -- that way but they could. Easily then port whatever they build -- -- in html five to any mobile device the right now. If you're a developer yet to do a really good job making a really complicated game for I -- and hoped that platform. Remains as relevant as it is now with the growth of -- in the potential growth of windows on and then you have to figure out how to port. Any of those games to those other platforms if you wanna go there because you -- standard marketers exploding like html five is billed at one element anymore. But he stuck to get people to come the content rate -- there's there's still the dynamic of the App Store and Apple's whole. You know walled garden -- -- ecosystem. That keyboard is comfortable I think FaceBook could pull it -- because people are already on FaceBook -- you got some FaceBook at this point in and to farm bill. -- found via html five that'll work camp but otherwise just designing an app for -- -- not automatically gonna put two in front of all the people back and he can use it had -- have a phone that's compatible with. Yeah I'm -- I think it I think based but has the best shot at pulling -- up because its -- in so many people already live in FaceBook like it to launch their browser. Because -- of if but. All -- they interact with or FaceBook out searching happened -- I mean I think they have private best chance and to really make -- -- that way. And it's true the chat -- is very widely pointing out that we've heard that -- you know build once run anywhere thing with Java before and mr. who ideally html five will be better -- thing I am in favor of a rich wet we're rich mobile application development of that is not platforms I salute NASA means the message there for sure yet anything they can free -- promote the app world. To me is a -- There were some other Google announcement yesterday actually -- held an event here in San Francisco to announced some changes and improvements to Google search. And they are kind. I thought they were out there and I really awesome so they have them. And two levels first about -- time -- your computer desktop and then your mobile device on the computer desktop. One of today and in new innovations is you know sometimes you think about how can -- make search better -- I would. Honestly I wouldn't I didn't see this one coming but they have a new feature that's problem one that's in -- -- the multiple instant pages so what happens when you type in a search. -- -- -- Then you know the top link which you most likely will click on. It'll instantly and -- in the background so when you click on it you don't have to wait for any load time of that actual page saves about three to five seconds that page loads instantly. And also this benefits Google because the faster that we get through pages. The more clicks that will go through which benefits them. And also see you know see more -- advertising also on the desktop side to other really cool things. On voice search now integrated also -- let me jump -- percent in the instant paid search. Only available at the moment -- on Chrome and they'll be rolling that out gradually on Chrome. On -- -- -- -- -- -- all counts. It's also armed you have if you're Mike is connected to computer you'll see a little microphone icon in your rule in google.com and search bar. And you can click on that and you voice search. Directly through the browser that is that's. I -- that -- even translate. I translate bucket into Chinese like you say that and it'll show you the Easter is the circle shall -- those options. Voice or to be and again and another cool thing is image search and you can do this in three ways you can either copy the URL of an image the road into the search box and it displays pictures that match like that so they're using like. You know photo recognition -- visual recognition on these photos all he can drag and drop a photo. In to that search bar in nearly Sony -- it's or uploading a photo that's rest you know residing on your computer's desktop. That's so -- that needs -- be getting ready for work in the morning just ask your computer questions and ultimately insert we -- -- -- that was the weather forecast for today you say -- environment and a. I am and bedtime you'll like from all over my house -- I -- I at least in my -- My office like this I can I use the voice search all that time on -- on out and -- have in. Far and away the messed up. That -- -- -- that is the main thing. That's pretty cool right now obviously the financial impact that some eliminated because -- only available through Chrome but they're saying that it could put pressure on other browsers to adopt the standard. Yes because instant games in particular can have a huge at eleven page -- instant -- thing that's not notably search that's not the image thing I don't know if I'll be using that as much yeah. As if you already have a -- yeah you might. I was actually for doing be real for a video streaming easygoing manner and under can add as much out -- is -- -- and -- computer from -- and. Sky and -- IPO is happening as we speak. It opened at twenty dollars per share with a market cap of three point -- billion dollars. I mean I'm -- edit that. -- if you're called pandora and if Julie was gonna Rother IPO somewhere around seven and nine bucks and and then they -- -- to ten to twelve bucks and then. As it released a public trading its I don't know what it's at at this moment those symbols. 1986. -- it is somewhere on peak I don't know but -- summer around twenty dollars on you know when it -- announced on around eighteen but. Crazy yet open its -- the highs over this is as of our recording time at 11 AM Pacific time on Wednesday. -- had a high of 26 dollars and open it when he the low -- eighteen -- five mapped about eighteen dollars and 85 and for pandora. The free Internet radio station which. As the Wall Street Journal pretty devastating he points out a basically brought down their profitability -- while the other is that it this is just really well written and painful by -- -- at the Wall Street Journal. Who says basically that it. Investors -- path. On pandora for a couple of reasons one is that the proportion. Of advertising to content is. Is that basically the -- is very bad there's only 1% 1% of listener hours are devoted to -- compared to traditional rate radios roughly 20%. -- -- -- -- Is that it has a ton of competition spot I had in fact signed deals with three the big four music labels in the US Apple Amazon and Google are all in the game. And the royalty rate that's the big one and this is where the killer is the royalty rates are just going up and up. And and are scheduled to increase every single year -- -- three point fifty. -- and they have up to this point 34 million active users up fivefold since 2009. The revenue doubled last quarter but because of these royalties the thing with pandora's business model is because they're streaming music. They still have to pay royalties every time so it's not like their profit margins are increasing. The more people use the service the more royalties and going to pay -- -- you don't see a widening gap of profitability to see it kind of stayed the same. And what the royalties slowly increase seen. By 2015 that actual profit margins gap is going to shrink. It's basically like you have to pay so much for every new user that you almost wipe out any potential profit and less seeking content convince advertisers to get on board but so far. The rates are really low and advertisers don't seem to be on. Anyway. -- is a little -- -- keep on investing in little bubble popping. Here possibly let you know that -- a black men aren't in their in on the -- of their service on their have a good day. I love their service right now I'm just not gonna invest and there's not and I can't anyways. Useful sometimes you know that we can't read everywhere -- defect in the bubble the first time around has thickened in -- I did buy a house the parent and -- Well our South Korea so that -- -- -- how awesome I'm not immune. Connect is going -- on -- windows is Microsoft releases their software development kit. This gonna enable users from their peak from -- windows machines. Give it up -- -- the API's use the camera in more different and innovative ways we've seen already some that connect hacks that -- out there before. Microsoft even offered -- SDK. Kit for all of that you know kind of the deep data the depth sensors the microphone sensors and how they can utilizes the -- sowing some cool. Devils -- that's via pair AR jewelry can control it with your arms just with a 24 hour period of people developing this though. One thing those collect came out at. And if you guys have a chance to play with connect really fun stuff but they offer this -- -- new app called connect on labs where they're gonna throw in a bunch of these kind of new hacks developed from the community. You can try out and they're already -- like six or seven of them. In this free. App or game that's available through the Xbox Live service so I'm really continue -- just. B cell open unlike what we've seen before with the technology that the fans are climbing -- developers and even didn't even care about video gaming. Wanna get their hands on -- so this is that this is a big time like. An awesome move by Microsoft is showing that they. Well they really show the kind of anyone -- my -- that -- -- but but it is that it's genius because they point out very specifically that can act on windows. Ultimately down the road to -- could really represent an inflection point for computing because they can totally change the way we interact with computers they say that you know. The move could eventually help connect technology and and motion control technology find a place and kitchens -- doctors' offices -- auto repair shops. There you know where you can't necessarily do you like the computer and math and you can. Or even a touch screen -- you can. In opening during the answer later. Yeah laws -- greater. Ellis -- grab the handle easily -- that would be. DN AOL at all. You give it like a voice commands open and he walked to the kitchen dad doesn't necessarily have to be doled out in the sesame. It is I -- Edited it and if this technology does eventually make its way into computers that really will be -- key chains in a lot of ways around you compute especially if like the voice instant it to be -- -- now this thing cool it. I think they're right I think they're saying like that this could become. Is that in the evolution of computing that a new group. He -- name like that features distinguished scientist. In the evolution of admitting it says this'll be a pretty memorable moment you. Know it -- Salinas when -- first I don't think that a lot of time that are a new. A new group but who grew up Apple and Google and doesn't that look internal liberation. -- -- Anonymous issued a video. And the Saturday eleven yes. Saying that their next target actually as the US Federal Reserve because they want Ben Bernanke to step down as a result of the crimes against humanity. That have been perpetrated by the Federal Reserve but actually I can't totally disagree. And I'm originally it was seen -- N -- has a. Are -- -- about anonymous is that you know a denial mystery denial service. I'm not gonna say isn't that bad but in the large scheme of things you take down a site -- day it's not that bad but really they've been able to get their messages out. Button right lol -- completely different method they're trying to steal data distributed. Publish it on the inner -- I don't think there's many people on the side of lol -- for -- for -- You know. Philosophical. You know. Means that they're going after what message they're trying to -- -- they're just there's up to no good -- -- anonymous is at least trying to connect the air. You know hacks or DD OS attacks with some sort of message which. Makes a little more effective -- meaningful for me. I think -- you know I'd like them as interesting kind of it's been interesting to like wander into the gray areas right try to figure out a -- who MI sympathetic to anybody here and if so why. But it does seem to be shaking out that low tech is basically just like. They're just rampaging across the Internet like. I heard of oxygen right and they are you know -- their their outing people for going to porn sites like that there was some story today that we team put in via about them. Outing -- 26000. People are visiting porn sites with -- -- -- grizzly. -- is not -- African business. And like when -- -- after PME we did the numbers -- -- -- your PBS and Nintendo like that okay puppy -- like you're really not. Building a lot of sympathy for yourself. On the other any got anonymous it's just like listening and we are. But we think that what the Federal Reserve has done in terms of like damage to the global economy -- -- -- politically motivated group and they're trying to -- like. There are actual injustices happening. And we. We wanna stop at -- we're gonna DD US Turkey because they wanna filter the Internet -- -- The Federal Reserve because that the economy is in shambles and no one has even been criminally charged. Even though they all knew exactly was it on in the third -- It becomes this -- -- where any vigilante -- is potentially dangerous by anonymous with Arnold a lot better it's. Especially when you kind of agree with some of the causes that they're bringing up on you Canada well. You know I don't I don't want anyone and youth service or website to be you know have -- DD OS attack but then. It kind of when I started seeing the pattern of how they've kind of developed what they're doing and they've shown what -- -- causes Urbina messages -- -- and out like Hewlett. I gotta say like that's there's some point to it. Yeah -- easy with -- we watch a little bit of this YouTube video -- that threat against the Federal Reserve. Includes a list basically of all of the crimes that the federal Thurmond had committed under Bernanke and it you don't understand it compelling. About entry in the world. You have what degree of confidence in your ability to control this. -- -- percent. 100%. If you. -- -- We should probably read what the message -- as well as an evil. -- -- -- -- -- It's. Critical review -- Mr. -- -- -- -- -- -- The Federal Reserve's policies are systematically moving the country -- -- -- ten point 1% of the population. The Federal Reserve has human. Tens of millions of people into -- the Federal Reserve is responsible for crimes against humanity. Attention it's gonna go down there yeah I would encourage you watch it will -- the link to that YouTube video in that in the show notes but it got kind of just a long. The list of of the crimes against humanity eventually and we're not saying -- -- -- -- to spend it ends justify the means. And that's where we find ourselves -- no matter what we're -- now discussing sort of philosophically. The at least the sympathy factor right which is like anonymous at least you can get beyond it. The more you read about what is going on just in America setting aside the crimes of the rest of the world. Just the crimes against the citizens of America. Alone frankly I'm surprised that America's not an outright -- ray and there's anonymous as being like we. Not have a little fun thing yes. -- -- -- Scientists have -- light emitting protein from jelly fish. With a single. Human cell to create a unique first. A living biological laser. It does not -- your pew pew -- do you wanna do that. The laser requires few elements material that Apple -- -- -- -- gain medium and with a data. Is they used. The jelly fish protein rate this Green fluorescent protein. That makes jellyfish -- -- lemon essence that act as that reflector -- It's the beginning of superheroes and we're gonna have people shooting lasers out of hand I -- jelly fish and -- than we. That -- electricity we have. Bugs that glow in the dark. Matter. -- -- -- like sharks with African laser beams to come thing. Let that would yet be the right into the net DARPA -- a conversation from earlier -- with only -- -- though it guys just you know -- the little down here the laser beam is tiny and week. Compared to traditional lasers -- the article. Yes and most importantly the cell would not harmed and -- and I I don't think that. That jelly fish was either no -- -- -- -- experiment is tiny and weak but they -- it's still an order of magnitude brighter than natural jellyfish fluorescence with a beautiful Green Kelly I mean -- Valentina. -- -- start Thursday at the link they're pretty beam of light. And then and was charged with forgive -- users that the death it's a biological laser so create amazing and about the -- -- More Lazard news today not sharks that lasers not jelly fish -- lasers. -- jets. But apparently being developed in Russia to shoot americans' battle -- out of this. -- And as well. We all knew lasers Cochran. To put the -- realism that -- write its -- You don't completely dead yeah it is we're very. Then the moment now. And I -- is making the shows legal on the -- That's apparently what they hope it's gonna happen there's mounting evidence that. The Russian military has revived. A Soviet area -- that link either project called the -- Echelon planes. It's definitely. In this new incarnation. The Soviet lasers -- the rest of lasers now which -- be pointed out an American Natalie. -- -- Oh man that's awesome feeling you're the man and -- loaded with flu like you can put into. At that that they can -- that -- with his voice it's not clear how far along the Russian -- pack release is but they say it appears to be heating up. As our US airborne laser test -- its cooling down. But this Ben. I know now -- my area of safety when history this is the way of things with America and Russia we go crazy developing spy planes and probably announced by satellite. And they go crazy developing tech to shoot down -- plane. -- and they'll comes full circle new cell phones and pokey such phones. You know what's happened and happy ending and are we where -- mildly exciting and kind of excited for Duke Nukem forever and fortunately -- -- did. -- is completely not in what Molly is called the best headline ever. This one comes from our -- Monica Duke Nukem forever barely playable not funny rapidly offensive. That's -- the headline of this. -- -- are -- any are you now know everything you need to know that amazing Amanda -- it was getting something like around a 44 and this is the game that was in over ten years in development off and on studio problems graphics engines about not so here this is all you need to know about the game okay. And I'll read through this quickly in the first few moments of Duke Nukem forever the character p.s and you -- and then -- an achievement for reaching into a toilet and extracted a piece of you know -- And you think white is the scheme rewards you for this we have -- Yeah it's really it's. That's rob here's I love actually the second paragraph is that they say there's a feeling among some fans of Duke -- anyone who dared to give a bad review to redeem titles simply doesn't -- -- what became its idea how happening here is -- you know this is why they're doing that then. We need to remove that goes the argument relax enough to laugh at the rampant misogyny and hateful stereotypes on display throughout the game. Paper reviews suggest that it's not funny simply too here's the -- -- dirty words. That's the reviewers is -- not an issue with the game any hint that constant jokes about penis -- aren't the height of comedy. The reviewer must not have a sense of humor. -- -- half happy ending -- news because apparently. Researchers at the university University of California San Diego in collaboration with Samsung's advanced Institute of Technology.
