The first Netbook to use Intel's next-gen Atom processor, the 1005PE scores big for battery life but offers few other frills.
[ Music ] >> Dan Ackerman: I'm Dan Ackerman, and we are here with the Acer EPC1005PE. Now, that is the latest version of the super popular 1005 series from Acer. Now, why is this guy important? Because it's the very first netbook that we've seen with the next generation of Intel's Adam CPU. That is the N450 replacing the older N270 and N280 that you find in pretty much every netbook ever made. So with this new CPU and new Intel Adam chip set, you get slightly faster performance. Some test. Kind of, the same kind of performance in other tests. The real story's in the battery life. The thing is much more power efficient. We got more than eight hours of battery life out of this system while using our very grueling battery-drain test. That makes this one of the longest-lived laptops you'll likely find in pretty much any category anywhere. So besides the new CPU and the fantastic battery scores, other than that, we've got a pretty standard netbook here. Not a lot of surprises. It's still got the 10-inch screen. It's got the 1024 by 600 resolution on the screen. That's sort of getting a little bit dated for netbooks now. We've much more use of the 1366 by 768 displays, which you find in bigger 11-inch netbooks and even on some 10-inch models. Now, you've also got the same kind of flat-top keyboard, and you've got the same, for Acer's, at least touch pad, which is just some raised dots right her in a rectangular shape with that single rocker bar for the left and right mouse buttons. We kind of prefer a more traditional touch band and separate left and right buttons. So you've got the new Intel Adam N450 and that amazing battery life on one hand, and you've got kind of a slightly older design on the other hand. That means this is sort of a half step between the netbooks of today and kind of the next generation netbooks that you'll be seeing all throughout 2010. That's definitely a step in the right direction. I am Dan Ackerman, and that is the Acer EPC1005PE. [ Music ]
