Ashley and Producer Logan discuss the Apple Event (Tomorrow Daily 239)

On today's show, we talk about the Apple event and a back it or hack it that will delight and terrify you if you hate spiders. Apple TV. [NOISE] Tomorrow Daily. [MUSIC] Greetings citizens of the internet. Welcome to Tomorrow Daily, the best geek talk show in the know universe, I'm Ashley [UNKNOWN] and that's Logan [UNKNOWN]. That's producer Logan in the flesh. He's real, unless this show, as we have mentioned before, is in fact in his imagination. In which case I am talking to like sort of the architect. This entire made-up world. This is the most egocentric episode of Tomorrow Daily for my mind. Very, very. I like that you wanted to get in on the action, though. It's really nice. Especially for iPad day. You're a big fan of Apple. Definitely. So let's not waste anymore time. Let's jump right into the headlines. [MUSIC] All right, so we have one headline today, with the Apple event. There's never anything else that trumps it. It basically steamrolls over all other news in technology for the day. So we figured, why not, let's just jump on the hype train, ride it to the end of the station. I think this is my favorite time of the year because I don't get a new computer every year, but I do get a new phone almost every year, if not every other year. Me, too. And so, we saw a lot of good stuff today. So, on the software side, we saw watch OS. Which had some really interesting features. A little bit more. I saw one for like a pregnant ladies,they can monitor their baby heartbeat. Yeah and like send the info to their doctor. That is really cool. And then IOS 9 has some really fun features. Which, everyone will be able to get next week. If you have an iPhone or an iOS device. But really, the star of the show was hardware. So let's start off with the iPad Pro cuz that was the first thing they really showed after the watch. So iPad Pro. 12.9 inches. Diagonal screen to screen and, I think this was something was a long time coming with Microsoft coming out with all these Surfaces. There needed to be some competition for higher end iPad that can compete with the Surface Pro. Yeah, and I think a lot of people have been, like you said, kind of looking for a touch screen version of a MacBook Air. Yeah. And there's been some talk about Apple potentially because the MacBook, and the MacBook Pro now are so thin. That they might just kill off the Air line. You think so? And make it iPad. I had always considered that Apple was trying to get away from OSX altogether. And I think this was just the next step toward that. Yeah, it would be interesting to see them integrate it fully into whatever future version of OS 10 that they would design. But, yeah, I like, I like it. I don't need it. I won't buy it. Right. I have a lot of friends that are graphic designers Yeah. and animation students and I think that they would get a tremendous amount of use out of something like this. I'd be real curious to see how a friend of the show, Mike Hobbs, responds to this because he uses Illustrator all the time, he does magazine layouts, and digital layouts [CROSSTALK] And they showed software for laying out magazines and newspapers. They did. And then Adobe came out and did a really A really cool thing, where they literally, like drew an up arrow, and it turned into a really nice, like fully formed beautiful clip art. Which was great, I thought that was super cool. But yeah, so they're a little pricey, but actually a little less than I thought they would be. Yeah, they're competitive with the surfaces, I hate to keep bringing up Microsoft in this case, but. No, I think that's a good comparison, and they actually. Oddly, though, Microsoft came out as a partner, that was weird. Yeah, I was blown away about that! I was like woah, what, wait a minute. It's just another sign of Apple and Microsoft kind of teaming up to take on Google. Yeah, very interesting, that Apple Doesn't view Microsoft as a competitor so much anymore. Hm-mm. Because they're in such different spaces. Right. That they kind of touched on things, but it's not the same anymore. Right. And the way you can use Office now with the iPad Pro and. Super impressive. and also with the pencil, with the Apple pencil which we haven't talked about yet. Apple pencil. $99 bucks. Yeah. Really precise. Utilizes similar force touch technology where if you press a little harder, you know the ink or whatever medium you want to draw in or you know, make designs in it kind of gets thicker or more Blotched out. Yeah, and again, going back to the Surface Pro, they kinda had this, but Apple, once again, put their spin on it and made it that much better because of it. Yeah, and I really like that it has a lightening port, just right in the end. Yeah. Like that, instead of an eraser, you just get a lightening port, right there. Although, what do you think that does to the battery of the iPad. I was gonna say, I do foresee Quite a bit of-, I'm curious as to-, because the keyboard connects with that little three pin connector. Real curious to see how that affects the battery life. But they did say a ten hour battery life. Yeah. So maybe it's like half. It's gonna have that iPad battery, which I can go a whole week on an iPad battery. Yeah. But then again, I'm not using it as a pro computer. You're not using it to design stuff and be a graphic designer So I've had Pro. And then- I was wondering how it stops. When we would see people using it to draw. But their hand would be resting on the iPad. I wanna know how it keeps from your hand making marks like From it recognizing where your hands are? Right. I don't know, that's a good question. Like maybe I can see if it recognizes the pen it knows not to grab other touch, but then what if you rest your hand first and then- And then start drawing, maybe it doesn't. Yeah. I don't know if that's a good point. It's not the multi-touch though, it might recognize both, it's a good question. Okay, so the release date for that is November. And they are pushing it out a bit. There are some production delays we have heard. They are starting to make them now. Which is fine, right on time for the holiday season. Right, in time for that great Christmas gift. For your favorite designer or your favorite artist. And after the other two devices, I'm not gonna have money now anyways. Yeah exactly, I'd be broke. And so it starts at 799, they go all the way up to a LTE model that is about what 1,049? Yeah, with 128 gigs. Like an iMAC but it's touch screen. It's weird.>> Yeah. It could replace like we've been saying a Macbook pro. It's competitive with that price.>> I'm thinking yeah, a Macbook air. It's maybe, you have simple tasks that you do and really all you need is something a little more lightweight and want Not quite an area where you need a laptop, like maybe that. Or, you don't want to us OS 10. Maybe you just want to use the IOS. That would be for you. I'm liking that keyboard though. I do to. It's nice. I really like the hardware, the service. So, again, we're bringing it back to Microsoft Office service. [LAUGH] But that's really the most comparable product, i would say it's very reminiscent of some of the stuff that Microsoft has down with their keyboards. It's really great, high quality. Super good, but expensive. The keyboard is like what, 149? Like, 169 I think. 169. Yeah, it was between 150 and 200 bucks. At that point, you might as well get a Logic. A Logitech keyboard. But then they might not have the working with the three prong port. I'm sure there'll be third party stuff. And then, okay, so moving on from iPad Pro. Next thing we're talking about, because we wanna do Apple [UNKNOWN] iPhones, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus. Success plus, like people are just going to start referring to it like that. I'm not incredibly excited about the new iPhone. Then again, I never really get excited about the S models. I'm the number model, because I like to actually see that I have a new iPhone. And I can't see the difference between the 6 and the success. That makes a good point. That makes a good point. I think I like a lot of the features that it has. I like 3D Touch. That was, they changed the name to 4 Touch for whatever reason. Hm-mm. It's now 3D Touch. I like some of the camera features. Maybe they were worried about people actually force pressing things. [LAUGH] Perhaps. Perhaps. They made it for pressing touch. Or confusing it with Star Wars. They just don't want people. Yeah. Probably using it for the force. Lucas Films probably sent them an email, and were like, you gotta stop. [INAUDIBLE] We have a phrase called force touch and force awaken. [LAUGH] But yeah, no, they have that, and then so I really like the camera feature where you can make sort of like a living picture. Yeah. That was kinda cool. But again, it's an S. So we're kind of in that middle of the model cycle that's kind of like okay, this looks good. I think some people really excited to upgrade. Yeah. I probably would just because I love to upgrade my phone every year. And now [CROSSTALK]. Frustrated. Right. Now with the way they price our phone contracts it makes easier for people to get newest and best. So, I'll probably upgrade, but I know a lot of people who texted me after they saw it and they were just like eh, okay. That's nice. I'll think about it. If I had the 5s and didn't upgrade to the 6, I would definitely be in. This is the time. This is the time for sure. So the iPhone I thought was very, kind of, I wouldn't call it middle of the road. It was good. but kind of, if you already have an iPhone six or 6x, you're kind of like, okay, all right. I'm interested but not sold. I'm not freaking out. Right. I'm not losing my mind. I'm sure it's gonna work great. It's probably gonna be a lot faster than the six, which it is but. Yeah, like I said, it's just not a big enough improvement for me to want to upgrade. So, like we said, IOS 9 next week, you can pre-order the iPhone 6S and the 6S plus this Saturday, on the 12th of September. Which is an interesting move for Apple. I think probably, because of September 11th, they want to be respectful of the day, move it forward. Right. I might be in the rare minority of people that are excited by wireless CarPlay. I don't think a lot of people have CarPlay right now. They'll get there. Right. They'll get there. Wireless CarPlay. I'm an early adopter to CarPlay and I'm super excited about the fact that I no longer have to plug in and do the touch ID. Need to get to unlock it, so it's gonna be. I tend to not use car play as much right now, because of the trouble of doing that, where as I can just do blue tooth. Had everything yeah, that's not good. Because of all the connecting. But now that I can have all that in one, it's easy. So part of that is, you're. Speaking of not connecting, you will now be able to say hey Siri while she's not connecting. You can activate that, sorta like okay Google, on a few different devices. Obviously Google has some special things like Google Now on Tap, which is really deep learning and super cool. So maybe not quite like Siri, even a little better I would imagine. But yeah, so It comes out on the 25th, so you only gotta wait two weeks if you can get your pre-order in. Hopefully you only wait two weeks, you won't wait for a backordered phone, that would be good. Okay, last one this is the big one. Apple TV. People have been waiting for Apple to get into television beyond just the hobbyist Apple TV box, and now they have the exact same box. Is a little taller, but now they're getting it. I've been looking forward to this for years because I knew that Apple had to be coming out with a new model of Apple TV since Roku started really hitting the mainstream. I agree. And the Amazon Fire TV. I'm a little disappointed, though. This is nitpicky because I'm super excited about the Apple TV. I would pay for it now if I could. But I'm a little disappointed there was no built in core cutter package to kind of get me away from cable tv. Yeah, I think that would have been nice. I do think they're working on that, and I would imagine at some point, I think that we'll see it, because there is access to an app store in tvOS. Like this is gonna be a huge developer boon, I think. They're leveraging their greatest app at Apple which is the App Store to bring people in and get people to buy this Apple TV. So, with the App Store, I think they will do something very similar to when you buy your iPhone. You get it, you open up the App Store and it says, here's a great new app for new users and I think they'll have these sort of really great curated channels. They have people that work at Apple that actually curate all these channels. They look at all the apps and go, okay thee are the great things. Like editor's choice, all of that stuff. That's what you're gonna see. You're gonna see, kind of different sections in the app store. Or maybe you ask Siri, hey Siri, what are some great channels that I need? Right. What are some popular channels? And then she says, Oh well here you go. Here's the top 50 or whatever that is. So I think the inclusion of Siri and being able to ask on the mic like, Hey what's popular? What's this? What's that? I think that'll help a lot. I was extremely blown away by the theory integration Into Apple TV. It was good. It was a lot better than I expected it to be. I expected to be able to be like oh who's in this TV show and stuff like that like you have been able to with Amazon's hardware. Right. But the feature of what did she say was one of the best things I've seen. Yeah that was my favorite. What did she say. Yeah. Then it goes back 15 seconds and tells you. Closed captioning. Temporarily. It'll automatically cut it off when it catches up. Which is great. For an old lady like me, I need that. Because sometimes, I go temporarily deaf. I can't hear anything. Now, sometimes my dogs bark and I don't know what just happened. I love how I can check the weather while I'm watching TV. Like, you can do the little multi tasking feature. [UNKNOWN] stuff was cool. I like the dual pictures, you can have dual pictures of stuff in the MLB app. That was awesome. I just really like that they are really kind of going for it, in terms of the app store. Yeah, I was a little worried that they weren't gonna integrate search results with Netflix and Hulu and all that. I was worried they'd want you to sick with the iTunes ecosystem. I think it's a must at this point, though. Right. And, I'm glad that they did, because it would have been, it would have been. Probably a kill for that, and I wouldn't have been interested if they did that [CROSSTALK]. Yeah, I would like to see Apple purchase a company like FanTV, where it's like, you can buy it here and maybe it's only you can buy it on iTunes, of course, but it's like here's all the places it's streaming. But it does integrate, you know Hulu, and places where you can buy pay stuff, like Vimeo, so maybe Yeah, it's got four of the major ones, it's starting out with Netflix, Hulu, HBO and Showtime, so right there that covers most of the bases at least with movies. Yeah. But with TV shows I'm glad that. You're not being forced to just buy every episode through iTunes. Like it'll actually show you the results from Netflix as well. [UNKNOWN] and Netflix, and you know, or you could buy it if you want, or you can rent it. But really, like here's where it's free to, you know stream and stuff. I did notice the Amazon Prime video in that. Yeah. But if it's third party developers I'm sure it'll be And I think Amazon will develop an app for the Apple TV. They have to. Yeah, because they already have it for the iPad so it's only given that they're gonna make it over to the Apple TV. Yeah, and they have like offline viewing or whatever. So okay, two models. You got different storages, locally. Low 49, 199. I think you're gonna want that extra storage because those apps are gonna be very, very big. Especially if they upgrade to some 4k streaming. You're gonna want that. Yeah. But- Do you think with the app store though, they are gonna bring over something like Sling TV to help with core cutters? I don't know, because, maybe. Because the thing is I think that if you open those apps, like let's say it's AMC, you would use your Sling TV account. Right. But maybe they're working on, cuz we've talked about, or we've heard about delays in licensing deals and agreements. So maybe Apple is trying to work on their own Sling TV-like Service. Mm-hm. Where you could sign in to watch full episodes of something. I always assumed that they were working on something. With your Apple account. Right. But I do know that they're very protective of Apple user IDs and passwords. Mm-hm. So I don't know if they'd want to give that information to just anybody. Right. And there's a lot kinda tied into it, so for what it's worth. Maybe we'll see it down the line, maybe another year or so we'll see some kinda deal worked out. Maybe in a year, that's what I think, maybe Apple's TV's to the new Apple TV's, second gen. Next years version will be really good. We're going to take a break, I don't think they gave an exact release date for Apple tv. Late October. Soon late October Within the last two months of Apple tv at least. And at the end of the year it was like a hundred countries. So hopefully, if you're in one of those [UNKNOWN] countries, you'll be able to an Apple TV if you're so inclined. We already did that, so now, we're gonna do, we're going back to Monday a little bit, cuz we weren't here and we're gonna do Back It or Hack It. Okay, so I saw this and thought it was very interesting, but they call it a drone, but it's not quite a drone I don't think because it walks on six legs. I think it's better that I was here for this rather than Kale, because I don't know if Kale could get through this next story. I think Kale might have been actually maybe a little bit terrified. Maybe that's why he's not here today because I warned him in advance and now I regret that. I deeply regret that. So let's talk about the Erle Spider. This is a six legged spider drone. That's what the company is calling it. And it's not really a spider because those have eight legs and it's not really a drone but it is a really cool looking robot that does a lot of different things. That can be programmed to do a lot of different things. And it's a Ubuntu powered Drone [UNKNOWN] basically. That's what they're putting together. They have a space where you can mount a little Go Pro. It's open source. They can do things like obstacle avoidance. They can walk around. You can program it to do different sorts of things. This is the part that I thought was really cool. So part of this early spider is what they wanna do is create an app store. specifically for this robot, and they want developers to be able to create programs for it, upload it directly and then you would basically open the app store within the early Spiders app. And you'd be able to buy programs for it. Between the apple TV and this everybody's getting an app store now. Yeah everybody has an app store. I have an app store, at home. What do you sell on it? I sell treats for the dogs. It's where I make all my money really. So, they can make their own apps. You can 3D print this thing if you so chose, if you're really an enthusiast. I just like this idea of them being really entrepreneurial about his robot. It doesn't seem like something that people are gonna go, you know like Geebo where they were like oh my gosh I can have a robot in my house. It's gonna be my friend. It's like this is for people who really want to program robots. I'd be curious to know how loud this This is too. Yeah, that's a good question. Because they kind of are talking over the V role, most of the time. Right, and there's soft mellow music. So. Yeah, I'm going to be really curious to see what it sounds like in real life. Because I like the thought of a autonomous robot of some kind roaming my house. Almost like BBA patrolling. Yeah. Have him patrol, that would be amazing. But if it's noisy, I don't want him to interrupt my Netflix. Yeah. No, no, no. Maybe when you're gone, it could scare people. That would be really good. We'll replace that with, we'll replace the security system with that. Yeah, you don't need a security system. Just buy this scary spider robot. If they could make it three times the size, I would consider it. It would make terrifying [INAUDIBLE]. And able to lower from your front door. Like in Wild Wild West. That's what I want. That Spider side slides to guard my house so it's great. So they want $50,000, they needed that much money to make it affordable because they need to make a lot of them to make them affordable. And it looks like a heavy piece of equipment. It doesn't look cheap. Yeah, it doesn't look cheap at all. And it is not cheap so that i s a good things at $3.99 for the early bird DIY kits that you put together. If you want one fully assembled, the early bird is $569 and $639 after the early bird's over. They- And that doesn't include any kind of camera or anything. No, they had like a GoPro, I'm assuming that's sold separately. And they have just under $6,000 raised with 43 days left. So they have been, recently launched but definitely are looking for some cash. Mm-hm. They're not fully funded yet, but Earle, Earle, E-A-R-L-E if you're so inclined. But, yeah, I would say for me, no, like I I am not a robotics enthusiast. And a programmer but I wills ay if I was somebody into that this would be a really fun attractive option. Yeah definitely again if I was building robots. But with a drone like a flying drone at least you can get really cool video shots using that. Right I got some really good shots on the on the early flyer. I imagine it will be really shaky though because the thing wobbles when it moves. And I just don't. That is a good point. See very many cinematic shots I'm able to get at the low of an angle. I can already get that just by walking and lowering my camera. Just by walking with the phone down on the ground, yeah. Right. So for me, I'm not interested either. But I think that there could be a lot of great uses for people that do Do develop robots. Yeah. Especially it could really push forward the search kinda technology, Yeah, I agree. where people try to get into disaster zones and stuff. Yes, disaster zones. We talk about search and rescue all the time. If you could just squeeze in somewhere and see somebody trapped in the rubble All right, let's not talk about scary spider robots any more, let's talk about you, cuz you're great. It's time for user feedback. [NOISE] All right, so user feedback. We asked everybody to use the hashtag TDCOCKTAIL yesterday, and tell us what alien would they like to share a drink with in space. The very first thing we have to talk about is, I mentioned Spock yesterday, and I said, I don't know if he would have a drink with me cuz I think he doesn't drink. But viewer Adam wrote in. And I'd just like to thank you, viewer Adam. And he says, it looks like you can have a #TDCOCKTAIL with Mr. Spock. They have at least two types, port and brandy. And then links to memoryalpha.wiki.com. And Vulcan port. huh So, there is apparently, he says, it's a bit of a controversy because while Spock said Vulcan's don't drink, it seems they make the stuff and Tuvok in Voyager did partake on screen. So, maybe only on special occasions every seven years. I don't know if Spock would be a good drinking buddy. I feel like he'd be constantly correcting me and one upping me on everything. I feel maybe that, after thinking about it, I was like, maybe he'd get really sad. Cause like, he's got a lot of sadness inside. Yeah, he's got a lot of sadness inside. I love the rest of the answers that we used today. Anna Rose wrote in, said I'd be over the moon to have a Ballantines with the 11th Doctor. Over the moon. Matt Smith, you gotta get Matt Smith in there. Good play on words. Yeah, it was a really nice, well done. Kevin wrote in, said I'm up for drinks with Dr. Frank N. Furter. Jesus wrote in, said I'd have a drink with the President of the Galaxy Zaphod Beeblebrox and hitch a ride in the Heart of Gold. Hashtag, don't panic. I like that, that's great. Super, super good. And then Phillip, very lastly, wrote in and said, I would have a drink with The Thing and ask it whether there was too much CGI in the prequel. But The Thing isn't an alien, The Thing became The Thing because of aliens. Became sort of aliens. I'd say no, after he becomes The Thing, he is an alien. But he's still from earth. He's not really humanoid anymore. Anymore. But he's still human from Earth, just with warped DNA. This is a very serious discussion that could be had. Mm. I don't know, okay guys, let us know what you think. Is The Thing an alien, or not? But yeah, so that was already in the feedback, super great stuff. And if I could, I would have a drink with all of you who are of legal age to imbibe alcohol. Anywhere. Otherwise I'd have a cup of milk with you. Just milk. You have some nice selfy action. You're gonna have the flash for the actual. The screen of your camera is going to be the flash, kind of like on Photobooth for OS X. But yeah, great stuff, gorgeous picture. At first glance, I thought this was the new set for the Late Show. Yeah, last night on the Late Show with Colbert, it was definitely It's really one of those where, it was like he showed the ceiling and then I saw that email, and I'm like oh it reminds me of that, yeah let's use that one. But then I noticed that his picture wasn't plastered all around the edges. Yeah, Colbert's pictures is all around the edges there. There. But yeah. So that is our phonetography for the day.
