Tech Minute: Apps to prep for college

0:59 /

Avoid the pitfalls of the first year of college with the help of apps. CNET's Kara Tsuboi reports on her recommendations for getting ready for higher ed in this Tech Minute.

Anyone starting college this year should download the free college101 freshmen tips app onto theeir Iphone or Android. Consider it a crash course for incoming freshman as it covers topics as varied as tips for getting good grades and how to avoid the freshman 15. Some of the categories are downright silly like can an app tell you how to be popular? But it is sure to bring up topics and issues you never before considred. Moving from your childhood bedroom to a dorm room is no easy feat. Download the free iPhone app, College Packing List to ensure you're only bringing the essentials. The app breaks the packing into categories like bedding and computer supplies, and even lets you customize your list. Finally, send your student off with the tools to keep herself cash positive. University Values, a free app for both types of phones, alerts kids of nearby deals and coupons at all their favorite stores and restaurants. In San Francisco, I'm Kara Tsuboi, CNet.com, for CBS News. [MUSIC]
