CNET News Video: Apps can help you eat locally and sustainably

1:04 /

Eating locally and sustainably not only helps the environment, but promotes healthy habits too. Yet, how does one begin to find the best options closest to home? CNET's Kara Tsuboi explores two smartphone apps that will assist you in making wiser choices for your family's eco-friendly diet.

Locovore is a great app for both iOS and Android phones. Once you install the free download, let the phone use your current location to give you the best guidelines for your region. For example, here in San Francisco I now know that (Rudibega's?) only have a month left to being in season, grape fruit has 3 1/2 months and strawberries are only a few weeks away. The apps other features include is I8 logo button for sharing your food finds with your social networks. Also, it has to help you find farmers markets near your home address and coming soon, recipes that use seasonal produce. Also free and available for both types of phones is Monterrey Bay aquarium's seafood watch app. It sorts the fruit of the sea and sushi into 3 categories. Best choice, good alternatives and those to avoid, usually do the over fishing or the way the fish is caught. For those in the avoid list, more ocean friendly alternatives are provided. This app also lets you find local markets that sell sustainable fish and provides many educational tools to learn more. In San Francisco, I'm Kara (Suvoi?), sina.com for CBS News
