Car Tech Video: 2014 Porsche 918 Spyder

1:11 /

A high-tech Porsche hybrid like no other debuts with a new world record.

We've been salivating over the Porsche 918 for some time, but Frankfurt 2013 marks the car's real arrival. Simultaneously will a new world record run at the Nurburgring and this immediately reminds you this is not your usual hybrid. 4.6 leader V8 coupled with an electric motor and a 7-speed dual clutch auto manual for the rear-end, another electric motor for the front. Totals up to 887 horse and 940 foot pounds. Inside, it's all rounded high-tech video display panels in the gauge pods and a tablet-like control surface down the consul spine. But perhaps my favorite detail is the pair of exhaust ports behind each seat. How those make it past the attorneys? The 918 Spyder is, of course, the limited production model at $850 grand, but clearly a look at what more attainable Porsches will be made of in the years ahead.
