Mazda ups the ante with the all-new CX-5, but can it right the wrongs of past models? Take a ride with CNET's Antuan Goodwin in the 2013 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring.
Now would be pretty easy for -- would argue that things have gotten a bit stale over a month that I mean to -- out of almost ten years old. The CX seven the CX nine have dashboard experiences that -- Probably older than that and let's face it nobody really like that big goofy grin -- on all of their current models. So in many ways this the X five is an opportunity for -- two totally reinvent itself. With a new model. They had a new design language a whole new dashboard experience and a new sky active engine technology that helps -- to get a bit more efficiency. I'm Antuan Goodwin with cnet.com. Let's take a look at this 2013. CX five grand touring and see what it's all about. -- Yeah it's. Underneath the TX five's hood and powering the front wheels -- the new sky active G gasoline powered engine the two liter four cylinder mill. Now are usually not and the plaque that Indian covered by the -- the blue paint on this Monday indicate that -- in the sky active models it. -- applicable that -- really important part them. What is important it held a direct injection technology in here hope that the engine to get a 155 horsepower and a 150 pound feet toward. Now that's not a lot of power but outright power isn't the sky active games what we're looking for here deficiency. A combination of lightweight materials used throughout the vehicle low friction component in the engine and a couple of aerodynamic tweaks. Help with the X five to get -- fuel economy rating from the EPA of 26 in the city. 32 on the highway now you can add an all wheel drive system for a bit more assured winning this. At the expense of a couple of mile per gallon in each category. Or you -- step down to. Which uses a six speed manual transmission to get about three more -- per gallon on the highway for total 35. And now our CX five is a grand touring model that means most of the tech in the cabin is actually gonna come standard. That basically includes just five point eight inch color touch screen. And of course a nine speaker Bose audio system meaningful exchange of digital audio sources US peak -- activity with iPod playback. You also got an auxiliary input for analog playback. There is Sirius XM satellite radio and of course HD radio and Bluetooth for hands free calling and audio streaming. Now -- Bluetooth audio streaming is a bit -- it seems like it only really wants to play back when the player or ideal source that you're listening to. -- -- -- Check this out we've got our Android phone right here and right now we're on the stock audio player that shows metadata now if I jump over to Spotify. And start playing something there. Stops. Can jump back to the standard audio player. Picks back up again. And then finally. Pandora. You get nothing. But nothing of course your phone may report metadata on all of the apps and I hope that's what works for you. The navigation system in monsters used to be so bad -- -- often find ourselves telling you just skip the whole thing in getting Garmin or TomTom. -- looking and Mazda has taken that advice these days because they switched over to a TomTom powered navigation system. Give that auto maker a couple of extra hundred bucks -- get -- the -- touring tech package which amongst other things. If you this SD card reader down here. And a little SD card that filled up with Tom -- -- data navigation system benefits from TomTom. Excellent IQ routing software was basically takes into account there HD traffic service to give you the fastest. Most efficient route between any two points. That basically means that a trip from home to work at nine -- may yield a different route. From the same trip planned at 11 AM or even 5 PM. Based on historic and current traffic trends. -- -- -- -- Yes -- just it's a little bit stronger then other vehicles in its class. That little bit of extra roughness and it gives you the illusions. Out of this car would have a really good fruit handling top and I mean that the -- regular round town. You know zipping down and off -- you know quickly cutting around -- corner type speed. -- not bad. Now the biggest problem that I think a lot of people are gonna have on their -- happening this he had -- is that well. 150 bratwurst artisans selling a lot of -- and it's not a lot of -- -- practice you're gonna have a hard time just hanging on. Our without really dropping down into more -- -- year. -- the six speed automatic transmission actually isn't that bad I mean that permit. Tendency to jump all the way at six years there -- leaving you out of the power band now when you do actually needed. To give you a little bit of a -- -- Ringo rated at -- downs and it'll drop down and it. I think it just a little bit -- again you know more than as it pleases me Angela -- those ships are crisp and that thing away. That -- -- an obligation -- -- wheel alignment and -- The 2013 the X five starts at 20695. Dollars for the beef export model with -- manual transmission. Affinity to the best fuel economy. Now if you're even thinking about getting half -- the -- available on this car. Go ahead and get the touring -- -- in jump straight to grand touring which is gonna get you all of that. For 27 -- than 45 dollars. Then go ahead and add 1325. Dollars. Bradley tech package which -- -- the TomTom navigation. Andy said he has --
